Switzerland is a high income, high IQ country. Also, the beautiful natural environment, mountains with their negative ions help to soothe people's minds and calm them down. It's kind of hard being extra when you're in awe of the world around you and making a lot of money.

America is the world's most powerful country. Why is the government so weak that it can do nothing to stop this self massacring violence?

I have lived in Montreal, Canada for fifty years and have never heard a gun go off, seen anyone with a gun except some police officers, seen a hand gun, rifle or, do I know any friend who owns a gun. There are a few shootings in Canada but, not every month or week or day as in the U.S.A.

It seems that every one or family in the U.S.A. owns a gun. There must be millions upon millions of guns in the U.S.A. Why is the most powerful country in the world a slave of the gun?

The problem is, bad guys always have guns. I've lived in several countries where guns are illegal but gangsters all have them. Now, gangsters don't generally go on mass shooting sprees but nutjobs will find a way to commit violence and murder. Look at the OKC bombing.

Wrong, guns are for hunting or self-defense, it's never OK to use them for murder. But, most people are not that responsible.

All nations were founded on violence, so you'll have to look elsewhere for your explanation. Personally, I think it's the destruction of society that has left so many feeling alienated, in addition to the cultural and media promotion of violence and the ease of access to guns.

The difference is in most advanced nations citizens do not have uninhibited and free access to guns.

Honestly, at this point, I'm actually surprised there aren't more of these types of incidents in that country.

As to why Switzerland doesn't have the same problems:

For one, it's more of a socialist country, meaning they care of their citizens health care, education and pension.

Those three alone go a long way in developing good relations amongst its citizens.

It's very easy to see why this happens, someone mentioned Swiss as an example, lots of guns few killings. Easy answer, they have money, they have safety nets, they get help. These things happen when mentally unstable people get pushed to the edge, which happens in countries with no access to affordable medical/mental care and no safety nets or help for the poor. Cheap and accessible guns is the topping on the cake on all of this.

Overall the mentality and culture in the US that everyone should fend for themselves needs to change. You live in a society, everyone living a better life is in the best interest of everyone. What use is there to be rich if you can't go out without feeling unsafe.

So many in USA society are alienated and angry, and Florida-male the most cynical and venal politician in modern US history and his sect of followers constantly strive to pour fuel on the society's long-burning fires and then fan them, knowing many among the angry and alienated are poorly educated, plus are religious sorts that actually believe in messiahs that can save them, and also believe they must have guns to protect themselves from those their messiah claims are enemies. And many do have serious mental problems, a most recent example the male who murdered dozens at a Colorado LGBQT bar, that male should not have been allowed to have a gun after the incidents he's been involved in. But the NRA and Colorado's Republican politician Boebert among others in the far right value gun owners more than citizens who want to live in peace, and be protected from the mentally ill gun owners.

Once again I'm happy to live in Japan where I can go to a supermarket and not have to worry about a nutcase with an automatic weapon opening fire.

The media will prevaricate, politicians will procrastinate, then the hand wringing.

Name have yet to be revealed, the investigation probably yet to begin to ascertain any confirmed motive.

But wait, we’re not out of the “thoughts and prayers” phase for Colorado yet!

What do all of these mass-shootings have in common? two things:

Easy access to guns regardless of capacity or background.

An unwillingness of one party, the GQP, to do anything about it.

My guess is that there's family breakdown in there, and possibly child abuse.

Maybe nobody, including teachers and police, listened when the shooter asked for help at a younger age, and the anger and resentment built up until this horrible incident.

I'm not excusing what happened, but these events don't come out of nowhere. There's always lots of trauma leading up to them. And if a gun hadn't been the weapon, something else would have.

My post, which may have been admittedly vague, was making light of the fact that for one party, the GQP, there’s never a good time to talk about guns, their contribution to mass casualty incidents or the easy availability of high capacity “military style” guns.

First, “It’s too soon. Now is the time to let the families grieve. Thoughts and prayers (usually on Twitter and strangely, no one ever seems to ask the families if it’s “too early”.)

Then, pivot to “We cannot politicize this issue for political gain even though one party wants to deal with guns and gun violence and one party does not which makes it by definition a political issue.

THEN, pivot to an interpretation, an inaccurate one at that, of the 2nd Amendment to shrug shoulders as if nothing can be done, mass murder on a never-ending cycle is the cost of “Freedumb” as Cancun Ted Cruz came out and said once, and go back to life until the next one.

Then comes the next one as it always will as long as racists, xenophobic morons, homophobes, white nationalists (these are not mutually exclusive categories) and nutters have easy access to high capacity firearms. And we start the process all over again, only with more people dead, more people ripped apart with horrific life changing injuries (The parents of some dead kids in Uvalde had to provide DNA because their children were no identifiable) and more families experiencing a level of grief I don’t even want to think about.

By now, the routine is so ingrained that one can pretty much tell when said tragedy happened by where in the cycle we are.

That is the point I was alluding to.

One party wants to deal with gun violence and one party does not. Gun violence is bad regardless of race or sexual orientation of the shooter. Seems like you are the only one who needs this explained to them.

and if you need a paragraph to explain your made up names for people? probably better to just refer to them in a way that people know them….their actual names.

Claiming it is this or that political party to blame does not address the issue and to be blunt neither party when in power has changed things or really wanted to as politicians on both sides have been bought and paid for by the gun lobby. The causes are not the tribalism that has of late infected the US political system and is so obvious in posts above, though it inflames tempers and fuels divide which both incites the unstable and prevents meaningful solutions.

The underlying mindset prevalent in the USA that leads individuals to these actions is not easy to define (contrast with Switzerland shows there is a difference, a cause but not what it is) but regardless of this the proximate cause of so many deaths is the promiscuous access to guns, without which the mass slaughter would be considerably less and considerably less frequent.

This is inaccurate. The Clinton administration passed an assault weapons ban that the GWB administration let lapse.

After Sandyhook, the Obama administration proposed sweeping changes to gun laws at the federal level and the Republican Congress blocked it.

After the March for our lives school shooting (Apologies; there have been so many I cannot recall the name of the school at the moment), the parents and students pushed hard on the Dotard (who needed a note telling him to make the families feel heard - something sleepy Joe has never needed) an Marco Rubio for changes in gun laws. Sadly to no avail.

After the Vegas shooting, the GQP had to be dragged kicking and screaming to ban the sale or possession of bump stocks which effectively made semiautomatic rifles fully automatic.

At the State level, efforts to control who can carry guns and where they can carry them have been struck down by GQP appointed justices.

So saying this is a “both-sides” thing is not accurate. One party wants to deal with guns and gun violence and one party, the NRA-bankrolled GQP, does not.

Over six hundred mass shootings in the US this year already.

And the usual people claim their isn't a problem with guns.
