So when the Islamic nutjobs use this as Americans not respecting Islamic beliefs as an excuse to jihad will Obama apologize for his wife's lack of tact in the Islamic world? Forcing this poor man to touch Obama's wife's hand must have been very tramatic to this sexist religious zealot. I wonder if the liberal bleeding hearts will be here to criticize their hero and his wife or the sexist zealot. I bet not. Probably bring something up about Republicans though.

Hilarious; how you managed to bring up "liberal bleeding hearts" in this thread.

Those ultraconservatives are really whack!

Those ultraconservatives are really whack!

@goodDonkey, the only ultraconservative here is the minister who feels reluctant to thouch Michelle's hand. If he feels that based on his beliefs that he can't control his impulses by simply touching a woman in a completly social way, then he is the one that is whack.

I watched the youtube link from the article and reading the comments was even more fun.

You can see him lean forward to shake her hand quite clearly but some of the comments are just great like saying President Obama was frustrated by all the others ignoring Michelle so he gave an angry glare so the guy felt he had to shake her hand etc...

Amazing how these nut jobs have such large and blinded followers that would even go as far as making up even more excuses for him!

If you not supposed to shake womans hand fine what's the big deal.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maybe he had a gun held to his back.

But really, total lack of imagination. All he has to do is show follow-up shots of him washing his hands to remove the 'pollution'. Reputation restored. Michelle can then wash hers.

Alphaape

then he is the one that is whack.

Who the hell did you think I was talking about?

Although she is an American woman, she should have observe the culture and custom of Indonesia.

He did it on purpose. Pretty sneaky way to touch a woman.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

He doesn't touch women but he uses Twitter? Just so odd....

It is just a honest mistake from Michelle.

Mr. Obama going with the bow shake in Japan...now this...way to do some cultural research!!!

In her defense though...what a stupid custom.

I suppose I need to watch the footage to be sure, but according to the article, it makes it sound like he's the one who did the grabbing of both of her hands. It's not like she tackled him to the ground and forced him. I just find it unfair to assume she didn't do her homework-- it's quite possible it just slipped her mind, especially since he shook her husband's hand just fine. I don't get what the big deal is here... Then again, I'm not an ultraconservative Muslim.

I blame the Muslim minister -- shouldn't be greeting foreign dignitaries if you cannot shake hands. The Queen of England shook Michelle's hand, so what's the deal with this guy?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

as a good Muslim, he restricts his contact with women

Yeah right. But when abroad on official duties you can probably find this guy getting a lap dance somewhere in between shots of tequila.

I just watched the video. What's up with Michelle's hair? Weird!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

He may be a conservative Muslim, but he sounds two-faced to me.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

In comparison to the real problems we face in the world this means nothing. Why do people care so much about this silliness? Shaking hands, bowing etc. give it a rest.

Just one more reason to regret elevating a rookie senator from Illinois to the White House after all of 2 unremarkable years in the Senate. The First Couple - - He bows to the emperor here like some over-eager eikaiwa teacher fresh off the boat; she towers over Indonesian VIPs and thrusts her masculine arms (seen the trapezius muscles on Michelle Obama?)and forces a handshake. Embarrassing.

Saw the vid on Youtube and the guy definitely was not shying away from a handshake. Big ol grin on his face too. Trying to cover his ass with his statement but the images don't lie.

ridiculous....

TimRussert: wrong argument. Next please.

"Just one more reason to regret elevating a rookie senator from Illinois to the White House after all of 2 unremarkable years in the Senate. "

Heh, it's an obsession. Why the hell does a website about Japan become some sort of support group for un-stable people to rant about Obama and Islam in the World News section? I really hope Mr Obama makes the second term just to see this lot implode through their own ranting....

It is amazing how Americans will never ceases to make me wonder how their country ever survived.

In a story about a man who is trying to cover up the fact that he willingly shook hand with a woman that for some twisted reason is taboo by making up every excuse under the sun.

American are so caught up in themselves and so paranoid about their leaders being from the opposing camp that they seem to see conspiracies everywhere and will blame everything from the weather to the common cold on the opposing camp.

The topic here is that this religious zealot shook Michelle Obama's hand and then got called on it by his followers in whatever backward part of Indonesia he get his support from.

It has nothing to do with anything President Obama did or said and it is tiring to the rest of the JT readers to have to pick through all the crap about the leader one side or the other being the anti-Christ or the devil incarnate.

You can take off your tinfoil hat no one is trying to read your thoughts actually we really don't care to hear them.

This guy is an idiot and in particular an idiot without and B@lls because he can't just admit he shook a woman's hand out of diplomatic courtesy.

I wonder what it looked like in the Bush years.

This guy will get over it next time he visits a prostitute anyway.

I´d say that is more topical than the un-stable people to rant about GW Bush and US conservatives in the World News section... in particular since liberal policy is now in power and we can all watch it unfold in all its glory.

Michelle Obama looks like she could rip the guy's arm clear outta its socket. Maybe that would have been the better protocol.

And anyway willi, being our resident authority on all things Islamic, you should know how adult muslim males behave around married women and of course, vice-versa.

Maybe you should check out the culture of normal muslims instead of ranting about the extremist ones. You might actually learn, inshalla, tolerance!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not at all Willi. Michelle Obama's gaffe is something that moderate muslims, at least those not living in the West - would probably feel un-comfortable about. It's called tradition, and I respect other people's traditions as long as they're reasonable and don't harm others. Maybe you should try it sometime.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Madverts, TimRussert: did you even read the article?

It was not Michelle Obama's "gaffe". The guy willingly shook her hand.

Madverts, to flip your arguments about respecting traditions - what is "unreasonable" or "harmful" about shaking hands? Nothing. So why not respect it as an offering of friendship from Western people? If this ultraconservative guy refused to shake hands with women on a visit to the US what would you say to him? Would you ask him to respect Western customs because they are reasonable and harmless?

There is no need to castigate Westerners for making a traditional greeting, or in this case, to castigate Michelle Obama for cultural insensitivity when the guy held out his hands and was clearly smiling.

Madverts:

" Maybe you should check out the culture of normal muslims "

It is strange that you declare yourself to be arbiter of what a "normal muslim is". Are you saying that Tifatul Sembiring is abnormal?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Mayuki,

It is her gaffe IMO. She should have been the shy little woman as a woman is expected to be. Not that the gaffe deserves all this attention mind.

Willi, I was hoping that living with one might allow me to have the necessary experience to know one. But then again you're a Muslim hate-monger and your posting history is testament to this. The blunt posts from myself shall never be adequate to pry open your clam-like mind. My apologies for even trying....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Madverts, I've lived with a few people who were muslim (and of course my uncle) before and it is understandable that you can only base your opinion on your experiences. But its not about them being muslim its about what kind of person they are and how they percieve their beliefs. Apparantly the person you live with (or lived with?) is a decent person, not a decent muslim. You need to make some friends with people that used to be muslim and stopped believing in Islam because of their own experiences to get a firm grasp of both sides.

Unfortunately countries with an Islamic majority populace don't have good track records with people who are not muslim, and even with other muslims due to some believing in Islam in its strict form compared to believing in Islam in a rather reformed way. Thanks to this strict interpretation of Islam it interferes with even the simplest of things such as greeting diplomats from other countries and who knows what happens when he tries to visit female leaders of other countries on their own soil.
