Muslim teen assaulted outside U.S. mosque; found murdered in Virginia

A 17-year-old American Muslim girl was beaten and abducted after leaving a mosque in Virginia on Sunday by a man who police later arrested on suspicion of murder after her body was found dumped in a pond, authorities said.

The attack spurred an outpouring of grief and horror in a Muslim community that has been gathering to pray at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque about 30 miles outside Washington in observance of the last 10 days of Ramadan.

The attack happened early on Sunday after the victim and several friends walking outside the mosque got into a dispute with a motorist in the community of Sterling, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a statement.

At one point, the motorist got out of his car and assaulted the girl, police said.

The teen was reported missing by her friends who scattered during the attack and could not find her afterwards, touching off an hours-long search by authorities in Fairfax and Loudoun counties.

At around 3 p.m., the remains of a female believed to be the teen victim were found in a pond in Sterling, police said.

During the search for the missing teen, authorities stopped a motorist "driving suspiciously in the area" and arrested the driver, later identified as identified as Darwin Martinez Torres, 22.

Police obtained a murder warrant that charges Torres for her death, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

A police spokeswoman told reporters the attack followed some sort of dispute between the man and the girls, and authorities had not ruled out hate as a motivation for the attack.

The number of anti-Muslim bias incidents in the United States jumped 57 percent in 2016 to 2,213, up from 1,409 in 2015, the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group said in a report last month.

While the group had been seeing a rise in anti-Muslim incidents prior to Donald Trump's stunning rise in last year's presidential primaries and November election victory, it said the acceleration in bias incidents was due in part to Trump's focus on militant Islamist groups and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

In an incident in London on Monday, a van ploughed into worshippers leaving a mosque, killing at least one person and injuring several in what Britain's largest Muslim organization said was a deliberate act of Islamophobia.

Isra Chaker, a person who said in a Facebook post that she was close to a family friend of the victim in the Virginia incident, said the driver came out with a baseball bat and began swinging it at the girls, Chaker said.

"She then went missing (presumably kidnapped/moved by the suspect) and was found dead this afternoon," Chaker said.

An online fundraiser for the girl's family had raised$61,606 by Sunday evening.

Police said a medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to confirm the victim's identity and cause of death, though detectives believe the body found in the pond was the missing girl.

I wonder how long it will take Trump and the GOP to comment on this.

I wonder how long it will take Trump and the GOP to comment on this.

It all depends on how it affects his approval ratings.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Trump will have to be shamed into commenting on this like he had to be shamed into commenting on the incident in Oregon. Like then, he'll more than likely use the POTUS twitter account instead of his personal account, which reaches far more people. Sad.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Is there any specific requirement for them to comment? You guys usually only want comments when the killer can be linked back to Trump in some way.

it said the acceleration in bias incidents was due in part to Trump's focus on militant Islamist groups and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Already trying to blame Trump for this too? What if this killer happens to be an Obama Dreamer illegal immigrant from a sanctuary city? That wont fit the narrative will it?

I really feel sad for the loss of lives, and why does every needless murder require a comment or apology or a disavowment of something from this specific President? Murder is a horrible thing and sometimes it isnt linked to anything political. Sometimes like in this case, its just a senseless loss of young life where the individual who does it gets blamed, not politics.

-7 ( +9 / -16 )

Trump will have to be shamed into commenting on this like he had to be shamed into commenting on the incident in Oregon.

So if this killer happens to be found out as an illegal immigrant from a sanctuary city, would you still like Trump to comment?

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Brilliant. It took no time for a conservative to reference the alleged killers ethnicity and tie it into sanctuary cities, etc.

The president that normalizes hate against certain groups of people should comment when people from those very groups are senselessly murdered. Full stop.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

If the killer turns out to be an undocumented immigrant from a sanctuary city, we won't have to wait for Trump, or any conservative, to comment on it. He'll be all over it like a bum on a baloney sandwich.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Shocking.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Brilliant. It took no time for a conservative to reference the alleged killers ethnicity and tie it into sanctuary cities, etc.

yes, and the Portland killer was (mis)identified as white supremacist Trump supporter who hated Muslims due to the culture Trump created within an hour. So if Trump tweets out that a sanctuary city illegal alien is the killer, you guys will say the background of the killer doesnt matter, doesnt matter who he IS. Even if he should have been deported already but Obama stopped it, you will still say it doesnt matter. Just a crazy guy doing crazy things, right?

But if a Trump supporter, it definitely matters not only what he did, but who he IS. The culture of Trump encouraged him to think of and do such a thing. Non Trump supporter/no Trump link, news drops it within 24 hours like Portland and the Congressman shooting.

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

The Portland murdered was influenced by Trump. Trump has normalized hate. You don't have to suppprt a person for that person's actions/speech to signal to you that those actions/speech is normal and acceptable.

Obama's soft stance on undocumented immigrants resulted in more deportations than during any other modern presidency.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

*Portland muderer

4 ( +5 / -1 )

If the killer turns out to be an undocumented immigrant from a sanctuary city, we won't have to wait for Trump, or any conservative, to comment on it. He'll be all over it like a bum on a baloney sandwich.

So he should only mention it if the killer is not of this category?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/19/muslim-girl-17-killed-on-way-home-from-virginia-mosque

Human rights groups have called on Donald Trump to be more forceful in speaking out against acts of violent intolerance.

Shouldnt he speak out against this violent intolerance from whatever group the killer is a member of? Isnt this what people above were presuming already he wouldnt do?

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

The Portland murdered was influenced by Trump.

Negative, but if it suits the narrative you can keep pushing that.

You don't have to suppprt a person for that person's actions/speech to signal to you that those actions/speech is normal and acceptable.

Oh thats a new one, you can actually support Bernie and Hillary, but anything bad you do is obviously from a Trump influence. Got it. So Trump influenced the Bernie supporter to shoot his own Congressman too, huh? Cause Bernie said it wasnt his influence, so someone must be blamed why not Trump?

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

So we had Righters on this site going on the other day about how the 'violent rhetoric' of the left caused the guy to go off and shoot the Republican's practicing baseball.

Will any of those who made those claims now step forward and condemn the 'violent rhetoric' of the right, that caused someone to kill this kid?

I'd bet a dollar to a ドナツ they won't.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

the 'violent rhetoric' of the right, that caused someone to kill this kid?

Sure, I will. If the person who did the killing is a part of the right. If they are not, how could they have been influenced by the rhetoric? It would have been what they would NOT have done, if they aren't a member of the right. If found to be an illegal immigrant, I will also condemn killings by illegal immigrants as well, but most of you dont want that said.

I condemn ANY violence of ANY kind. And I wont take it back 24 hrs later and point a finger at the other side like Nancy Pelosi did. I feel sorry for the loss of ANY life, especially young people still learning to live.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Will any of those who made those claims now step forward and condemn the 'violent rhetoric' of the right, that caused someone to kill this kid?

So are you trying to tell me it wasnt the violent rhetoric of the left that got that Congressman shot? The guy had a list of names, all Republicans. Crazy people just shoot the first people they see. He was specific down to certain names from a certain group only.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

You cannot tell me that a Sanders or Hillary supporter would do anything whatsoever that Trump advocated. They can simply refuse to do it, and wont even lose their life for their refusal. If they did what Trump rhetoric says, then they would be a Trump supporter. Must be a nice world you live in where anything bad you do, you can just blame it on the rhetoric of a group that you dont even support. The group I dont like made me feel that way and made me do it! Ridiculous.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Some simple logic being bandied about.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The president that normalizes hate against certain groups of people should comment when people from those very groups are senselessly murdered. Full stop.

Not hate, trying to round up potential radical Islamists foreign or domestic is not hatred. "Hate and Race" for libs go together like burger and fries.p, both bad for your heart.

So we had Righters on this site going on the other day about how the 'violent rhetoric' of the left caused the guy to go off and shoot the Republican's practicing baseball.

Yes, that's correct and not including the other constant physical assaults that the left perpetrate on the right.

But make no mistakes, this was an heinous and vicious act.

Will any of those who made those claims now step forward and condemn the 'violent rhetoric' of the right, that caused someone to kill this kid?

I did and I don't know anyone on the right that wouldn't. No one is silent, no one thinks it's cool, except the extreme far out of this earth right loons.

Hang in there, Champ. If it is easy, you ain't learning, and this clearly isn't easy for you

I hope every liberal takes that much needed advice.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

So are you trying to tell me it wasnt the violent rhetoric of the left that got that Congressman shot?

I didn't make any claim about anything on the left one way or the other. What I did was repeat the claims by the rightists on this board:

So we had Righters on this site going on the other day about how the 'violent rhetoric' of the left caused the guy to go off and shoot the Republican's practicing baseball.

As you'll see, I didn't make any statements any which way as to the accuracy of the claim, I only pointed out that the claim was made.

Sad tragic murder of a very young teen and even more sad that some people use it to gain political capital over others, even without a single word about the story itself which was a very young girl was abducted and killed terrible pain for her family and friends. At least 19 comments out of 21 don't even mention the dead girl.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

No matter the Reason a Girl was killed and the Perpetrate needs the Death chamber , A life for a life.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

The departed doesn't need mentioning by us as it goes without saying her death was tragic, heinous, etc.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Yesterday upon the stair

I saw a man who wasn't there.

He wasn't there again today;

I wish that man would go away.

Trump does not belong in this thread, he was not invited here and he has not commented. Go away!

A murder has taken place, and it sounds sickening. I pray for all of humanity.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

@zichi is correct.

Sad that people on the far left and far right only seek to gain political points when someone has been killed. Shame.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Anger and fantasizing about violence strangely enough are often satisfying or haven't you noticed (buy a movie ticket). We live in a world of nearly instant communication that amplifies violence and makes it seem immediate (when for most people it really isn't) which probably overwhelms whatever constraints some people have. As long as these conditions continue don't expect such acts as the murder of this poor girl to abate.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Trump advocated

Well, it doesn't exactly help with Trump advocated (and trying to implement with failure) his Muslim ban.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

So there was an traffic altercation that led to a first assault, then that was followed by a kidnapping and murder?!  I just hope they have the right person who murdered her, because they're not right in the head at all.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

So far, no indication that this was anything more than a violent idiot committing a brutal crime. Condolences to the victim's family, and if this guy is indeed the perp then I hope that Virginia has the death penalty.

Now, back to our normal political bickering.

Nishikat, there is not and never has been a Muslim ban. The action Trump took did not affect more than 85% of Muslims, including those from the most populous Muslim countries. You would think that such a ban, if it were to be enacted, would perhaps INCLUDE nations like Indonesia or Pakistan or Bangladesh if it were to actually be a "Muslim ban".

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

The senseless murder is not being treated as a hate crime, the police announced. That tells me a lot. Doesn't fit the narrative.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It's not a Muslim ban just like law's that were aimed at restricting the vote of black people weren't black voter suppression laws because some black people were still able to vote. You see, if a rule or law is specifically meant to affect one group of people, it's not really about that group of people unless it affects every single person in that group. Come on people, it's logical, and not that difficult to understand.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Horrible thing for a family to learn.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The hatred continues.

Another life taken. Where does it all end?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Not a hate crime, a road rage incident, police say.

So, if it shouldn't matter that the murderer is from El Salvador and can't speak English, then it shouldn't matter that the victim was a Muslim.

MSM and the SJW's jerking their own chain bringing Trump into this.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Not a hate crime, a road rage incident, police say.

A 17 year old kid. Beaten , abducted and murdered.

From the BBC:

Nabra's mother, Sawsan Gazzar, told the Washington Post: "I think it had to do with the way she was dressed and the fact that she's Muslim."

2 ( +5 / -3 )

So, if it shouldn't matter that the murderer is from El Salvador and can't speak English, then it shouldn't matter that the victim was a Muslim.

Faulty logic.

Next you're going to be telling us that 9-11 was a conspiracy.

MSM and the SJW's jerking their own chain bringing Trump into this.

Trump spends two years spouting anti-muslim rhetoric, and the right things that no anti-Muslim violence will result from that. Reality disconnect.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

There's a world of difference between saying someone commits a crime because they are from El Salvador and doesn't speak English and saying someone was attacked because they were Muslim. Just because one is from place X does not mean they will be violent. However, when people from place X or that look like X are being attacked, we can say that someone from place X or that looks like X was likely attacked because they are from place X or look like X. This means that it does not where the alleged murderer was from, but it does matter that the victim was Muslim.

Fizz: I was wondering where you had gone with your. nuggets of "knowledge." Welcome back.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Oh dear. Narrative busted.

Police are now calling it a road rage incident and the suspect; Darwin Martinez Torres is an illegal alien from El Salvador.

A horrific crime and more proof that President Trump's hard line stance against illegals and sanctuary cities is the right thing to do.

Hopefully this will silence the race-baiters.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

When the father was interviewed he refused to blame Trump he blamed the illegal criminal who did it. The mother is still saying it was definitely a hate crime and I agree with her. Why can it not be a hate crime just because of the race and/or immigration status of the alleged killer? They used to create the term white Hispanic when they still wanted to make it about race.

I really feel for these parents for their loss. Shouldn't have to lose their daughter at such an age. But unfortunately in this era a lot of crimes have a societal and political discussion that needs to be had as well.

So I guess those of you who wanted to shame Trump into taking full responsibility for this hateful act are ok if he doesn't mention it now.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Was it a hate crime or such a terrible brutal murder, anyone know?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh dear:

Immigrants commit less crime than citizens.

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/01/26/us/trump-illegal-immigrants-crime.html

Trump's claim that undocumented immigrants and sanctuary cities are dangerous is demonstrably false. The evidence, or proof, of you prefer the term children use, is irrefutable.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Trump's claim that undocumented immigrants and sanctuary cities are dangerous is demonstrably false. The evidence, or proof, of you prefer the term children use, is irrefutable.

Because the NYT says it, the very paper that states their job is to stop this president at all costs, astounding! That's NOT even on their opinion page, I'll take that report like everything else from them with a speck of salt if that.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

No matter the Reason a Girl was killed and the Perpetrate needs the Death chamber , A life for a life.

Because that's just what the world needs, Old Testament style vengeance and retribution, right?

Another life taken. Where does it all end?

I'm glad you didn't ask "when".

So you contend that "the 'violent rhetoric' of the right  (cause) someone to kill this kid"? It has to be first said and then proven before it is condemned.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I am still trying to figure out how is this a road rage incident, when the other person was not even in another vehicle and then miraculously the body was in the pond from the other article of the same event. And who the hell just happens to carry a baseball bat with them in the car? Was he just coming or going to baseball practice? And why use it on a girl to start with even if carried for protection in the car!? He was just swinging to make everyone disperse and then just lost control?

And here we are at each others throats arguing about what stupid, bigoted, racist and sexist thing Trump will say next. But he did not kill her. He did not order her death. But him being the president, the head of the greatest (was?) nation on earth has got to be more careful. We are already a tinder box, just waiting to go up in smoke. Do not make it worse with sick rhetorict. Stupid people will listen and draw their own conclusions.

Or maybe this guy was just a nut... we seem to have a lot of those these days... Just imagine if he had had an easily obtainable firearm, this could of been much worse...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So the perp was a young illegal alien from El Salvador... possible gang connection? MS 13 recruits heavily in central America. This may explain the bat in the car as well.

Another senseless crime committed by someone who never should have been in the US in the first place. The victim's family must be beside themselves with grief.
