Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno

Any relation to our pot-plant throwing friend?

Why doesn't she just say she's not a Muslim?

If drinking beer is the kind of freedom the Muslims hate, I can understand now why Australia joined in the War on Terror.

Malaysian clubs and lounges typically serve alcohol and are not legally required to check if customers are Muslims before serving them.

Is this true? I was in Malaysia for the past two weeks, and according to the newspaper, businesses are not legally allowed to serve Muslims. A convenience store in a mostly-Muslim area was raided and all alcohol removed by the police because they served Muslims.

BARBARIC!!! They are going backwards in time. Especially in a mixed country like that. There's no happy ending for this people. It should be an international law to seperate religion and state.

so drinking beer is equivalent to offenses such as rape. oh, me bad, forgot that actually rape is ok in some Islamic countries

where are those human rights activists that cry so loud about the quality of rice and bilingual TV in Japanese prisons?

What will happen if somebody contaminate,as a form of attacking, their drinking water with alcohol ? Will they stop drinking water until everything is clear? if so it is very vulnerable indeed. And also what will they do about fermented products ,like soy sauce, which contain trace amount of alcohol? Not using them at all? Its quite headache isn't it.

This is their culture, not ours, so we have no right to pass judgement on it.

I would hope that prior to the scheduled caning, someone in high office intervenes and have the caning replaced w/ another form of punishment - community service or some sort of work punishment. Caning seems too excessive if the violation is ONLY drinking some beer. Just a suggestion.

Had one of the best holidays of my life in Malaysia, and shifted plenty of beer, too, I can tell you.

Poor lady.

timeon Try your self to do that any Islamic country especially in Saudi Arabia. You will find you self, after you loose your head apart from body.

In point of fact, thats a load of nonsense. We can and do pass judgment all the time. Thats why we consider them to be barbarians. Cultures that denigrate women, that allow for violence and rape, we condemn those cultures. We certainly don't do the mealymouthed cop out you're advocating. Or rather, the majority of us don't. If we don't advocate strongly towards them, they will never change.

Largely anecdotal and only marginally relevant, but I used to go out on the town regularly with a bunch of Saudi pilots that were exchange student-pilots in my squadron. The first time I saw one order a beer I asked him how that was condoned by his religion. His clever answer was that the Qur'an instructs that the "first drop of alcohol may not touch one's lips" or something to that effect. He then proceded to dip his finger into the freshly served beer, flick the beer on his finger on to the floor, then drank the remainder of the pint without hesitation. My Saudi squadronmates were some of the hardest partiers I've known.

At 32 years of age she should know the laws of her country.

Even if they are backward.

Upon reading this, my instinctive reaction is take beer's best-known by product and aim it directly at Malaysia.

I can't understand why some interpret Islam the way they do. Drink a beer and get beaten, but blow up innocent "infidels" and get 70 virgins, damn.

Why anyone chooses to practice any religeon that impinges on their personal freedoms I will never understand. That goes for not just Muslims, but fundie Christians, Jews, Jehovah's, Mormons and on and on. By the way, I know Muslims who break dietary laws and drink but they do it in the west where the religeous laws aren't tangled up with the civil laws. Sad on so many levels, I usually view Malysia as an up and coming nation but until they undo these sort of laws they will remain third world in the eyes of westerners and other asians.

firoz, it was in the news 1-2 months ago, some nutz legalized rape against "infidel wives". check your sources

Malaysia needs to think about the image it is projecting of itself as some backwards country ruled by religious fanaticism. Not only does the punishment not fit the crime but that it is a crime is absurd by modern global standards. Progress as a nation isn't just high rise buildings.

You do have the occasional nutjob that converts to islam. But most people aren't converted, they're born in. Meaning they never chose their religion. It was chosen for them. They can't unconvert either, as thats illegal, with death being the penalty.

There are places in Gotanda where you have to pay for this kind of treatment. I wonder if the whipper gets turned on...

Then which prefecture did Muhammad end up in? Saitama?

Either in Amsterdam or Manchester, depending on who you ask.

Malaysia " well and truly Asia" ??? Next time you see the television tourist publicity inviting the world to Malaysia remember if you or your wife have dark skin you will probably be asked for a passport before you are served beer in a bar. If a women dares to dress like a women she will be stared at or looked down on. Extreme muslim Malaysians are carrying out a witch hunt which if not controlled will kill tourism! Now whipping is the in word - "The world is watching you Malaysia" shame on you and these stupid judges. Before planning a holiday to this crazy place where people are whipped for silly small religious offences between them and their god please be aware " Malaysia is now "well and truly Saudi Arabia" and how many of us would choose to holiday there? !
