These deaths are more than a little suspicious. You'd be crazy to accept any type of diplomatic position in China. Unless you are from Russia or North Korea.

RIP.

What a peculiar coincidence. If that is what it is.

So is this " news" supposed to insinuate that China is knocking off foreign ambassadors now? Let the evil China narrative go into overdrive from now...Russia hasn't been enough. Whats next - Iran?

-17 ( +6 / -23 )

Exactly.

Jumping to conclusions without further background information is the sign of a biased observer.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Jumping to conclusions is what the media is all about these days, folks just love conspiracy theories!

2 ( +11 / -9 )

absolutely no one should find this suspicious. We can always trust the information coming from China.

When was the last time four ambassadors from four nations died within a year while posted to a single country? Ever? It has now. This shows anything concerned with China is suspicious. Especially the deaths of high ranking foreigners.

It possibly is simple coincidence. Or perhaps one or two were "assisted" in passing before their time. We will never know.

Great opportunity to judge/gauge the commentators here, whether they are commenting with or without bias/clouded lens, etc etc, etc. Just read their comments here.

It's a Guinness World Record! Coincidence or did they displease the Chinese? Who know Dealings probably involved lavish entertaining of all types and that may have played a role if the ambassadors were older (heart attack - probably in some hotel). Wonder how it feels to be told you are ambassador #5. Good luck.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Apparently, such a position I would not want.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

People are seriously losing it if they imagine the CCP would actually knock off or somehow bring about the deaths of ambassadors from four such disparate countries as Myanmar, Ukraine, Germany and the Philippines. What possible motive could they have for doing that? And have any of the countries involved so far actually raised any concerns about the deaths?

I know China is one of the world’s two or three major villains at the moment, but get a grip, people.

One in each season. Look at the consistency

You mean they tell them beforehand? I hope at least the condemned man’s last feed is a decent one.

Oh dear...

To put things in perspective:

2022: Italian ambassador to Australia

2022: amassador of South Sudan to Ghana

2018: ambassador of the Republic of Malawi at the UN

2017: ambassador of Russia at the UN

And that's only a 5-minute Google-search, guys...

There are 195 countries in the world. They have representations, whether embassies or consulates in most countries. If you count the ambassadors and other attaches you literally end up with hundreds of staff members for each country times 195 countries.

These people travel abroad, may be in countries rocked by social troubles or lacking basic infrastructures (such as useable roads), may have local diseases to which some of the staff may be (unknowingly) allergic to, etc, etc, etc.

Some people make it sound like the Power Rangers curse. If you have significant figures of people involved, of course, some are going to be sick, have accidents, be involved or victims of crimes and, unfortunately, die...

Jeez...This is getting too ridiculous for words...

A very strange coincidence indeed.

Oh dear...

To put things in perspective:

No single country in your list has been careless enough to lose 4 envoys in a year, I believe that this is without precedence. However, I also believe it unlikely that this situation in China is anything other than coincidental though I can understand why certain people jump to conclusions, this is tailor-made for the conspiracy theorists.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Even diplomats are not safe in China.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

To lose one foreign ambassador is unfortunate, to lose two is careless, to lose four is down right suspicious! (with apologies to Oscar Wild).

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Probably just bad luck/coincidence, but that so many people are open to the suspicion of foul play says a lot about how China is now perceived.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The news seem quite suspicious, but taking into account the huge number of diplomats, their ages and the pandemic it is not as difficult to happen as it would seem just by reading the headline.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Health care in China has always been third world quality. Add a pandemic to the poor quality health care and that makes it a dangerous place to visit for anyone.

And according to this, it seems that some...body...or some...people (whoo-hoo, scary) is whacking off political and public figures in the US amongst which none less than Colin Powell, Bob Dole or Donald Rumsfeld.

https://www.politico.com/the-deaths-that-shook-politics-in-2021

Must be the deep state! (#sarcasm)

Heck, internationally, their tentacles even reached out and whacked Prince Philip and de Klerk!!!

Yes, some were old, but some were also 42 or 53. No Chinese, North Korean or Russian in the list. No doubt, its a Chinese-Russian-North-Korean conspiracy! (#sarcasm)

Joke aside. Got the point? In the article, the Ukrainian was 65 and the filipino was 74! I lost relatives who were younger than that!

It may come as a shock to some, but people, like...die. We all do! (Now, no need to get paranoid when leaving the house though...)

Yes, those 4 are in a specific (and limited) trade and profession. But again, there are most likely hundreds of foreign (i.e. non-Chinese) embassy-related personnel in China with even a lot of coming and going (back) home or moving to other locations.

As such, more may have had health issues or even died after leaving China within a year or a few years of their return. A little bit like this one:

https://se.usembassy.gov/statement-on-the-passing-of-former-u-s-ambassador-to-sweden-azita-raji/

Ambassador to Sweden in 2016, dead by 2022. Again, got my point? She was in Sweden, but I'm pretty sure that with some of the luminaries we have on this board, if she had been in Russia or China it would be (yet another) complete freak-out.

Just as another reference: here the list by the Japanese Mofa of the embassies (71), ambassadors (57), consulates (103, but generally locals with a honorary status) in Japan. Depending on the country and size of the embassy you may have a lot of attaches (military, trade, culture, etc, etc) not counting the ambassadors who are not plenipotentiary or extraordinary (e.g. in my country's super-small embassy we had 2 ambassadors: one plenipotentiary, one not, both with their families), not even counting the local staffs.

https://www.mofa.go.jp/about/emb_cons/protocol/a-h.html

I know it's hot outside. But some people are in dire need of a cold shower whatever the season!

Well, we know 100% that it wasn't Covid related, because China doesn't have any Covid thanks to their Zero policy. It wouldn't dare.

It isn't like China would ever lie to anyone, certainly not Chinese citizens or anyone outside China. They've never done that. Not once.

4 people dead, from the same country. 4 people. If they weren't all in the same vehicle accident or fire, it is beyond suspicious. I thought Myanmar was friendly with China. China wouldn't be testing new anti-personnel weapons on diplomats. I can't imagine that, even for the CCP.

Perhaps those ambassadors had severe underlying medical problems and this was going to be their last position (forgive the pun)
