Rohignya have technically been non-citizens since 1982. Technically they've been living under a system of apartheid in their own land, and even the anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu has said that.

I do not know what anti-apartheid activist Demond Tutu knows about the Rohingyas in Burma, but you might want to read up on the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army and its bloody history. It is pretty safe to say that without islamic terrorism, the Rohingyas would live as peacefully in Burma as other ethnic groups.

They're not even considered as citizens in Myanmar. They live under an apartheid.

By the way, how about some of these supposedly "peaceful" ethnic groups in Burma, ne Myanmar. The Karen perhaps? The fought for independence since British times. There are independence movements, and military insurgencies among the Shan and in Kachin State as well as the Karenni people of Kayah State

And those ethnic wars have been going on since 1948.

What a sad disappointment this woman turned out to be.

I never thought I'd see the day, but bass, you and I are in complete agreement on this.

Using claims of ‘election fraud’ to justify a coup d’etat against a democratically elected government, carried out by a thinly-veiled dictatorship containing a disproportionately large number of military servicemen. Now where have I heard that before?

Dont be so bashful. Tell us where you have heard that before.

But Zaphod, I wouldn't dream of insulting your intelligence by spelling it out for you. I'm sure you'll tease out my inference in no time.

Arakan, what is now known as Rakine State, was an independent kingdom for some 5000 years before it was first conquered by the Burmese in the 1700s. That put Burmese forces in direct contact with British forces of colonial India. The British then invaded Arakan and fought the Burmese back. Both sides, the Burmese and British ransacked their main temple and took sacred objects from them. The British eventually conquered all of Burma and ruled it as a colony, including Arakan. Arakan was he scene of several hard fought battles against invading Japanese forces. When WWII was over and Burma became an independent state, Arakan was divided into three separate districts and awarded by the British to Burma. The Rohingya immediately began to agitate for secession and independence. Do you really blame them? For thousands of years they were an independent kingom until they were invaded and subjugated. Now you begrudge them their fight for independence.

By the way, how about some of these supposedly "peaceful" ethnic groups in Burma, ne Myanmar. The Karen perhaps? The fought for independence since British times. There are independence movements, and military insurgencies among the Shan and in Kachin State as well as the Karenni people of Kayah State. There is also the Ta'ang National Liberation Army. Some of the groups even united to stage raids into China along the border with Myanmar. Myanmar has been is considered to be the longest lasting civil war in the world today.

It’s only a matter of time before they start crowing about ‘fake news’.

Who is "they", and where can read up on them to crow about "them" crowing about fake news? Always eager to check the expert predictions. Thanks.

But don´t expect CNN et al to report about the RSA.

Desert Tortoise

Militant Buddhists were the driving force behind the Rohingya genocide. Some of them are as bonkers bloodthirsty as any Daesh fighter. They are open about their hatred of Muslims.

I know that is the mainstream media narrative, but it blanks out the long history of Rohingy terrorism against Buddhists in Rakine state as well as the deep infiltration by Al Quaeda and ISIS into the Rakine population.

Clearly the reality is not the simplistic picture of bad Buddhists and angelic Rohingyas that the media are selling us.

Rohignya have technically been non-citizens since 1982. Technically they've been living under a system of apartheid in their own land, and even the anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu has said that. And even if some Rohignyas have committed terrorist acts against Buddhists in Rankine state, does that justify an 'ethnic cleansing' against ALL Rohignya people who are not even entirely Muslim? I don't think so! Two wrongs don't make it right, nor does it make it even.

I'm aware that right now that some people are sympathsizing with ASSK but* I'm not.* She collaborated with these murderous cretins, she denied and lied about the genocide and this is the medicine she has to take for selling her soul to them. It's karma time now, take your dose!!!!

The military knew that they could ethnically cleanse the country of Rohingya wiout a peep from the Buddhists - or with their complicity.

I wonder if the Myanmar military got the nerve to try from trump and all the other insurrection idiots in the US or was it the other way around. There are a lot of parallels!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Suu Kyi's party won 83% of the vote in only the second election since a military junta agreed to share power in 2011.

The generals are following Trump's M.O. by using unproven "election fraud" trying to overturn an election that went overwhelmingly against the generals

I'm sure in a 3rd-world country as diverse as Myanmar there would be some inconsistencies, but not enough to overturn an election in which Suu Kyi's party won 83% of the vote while the military candidates only got 6%

And it's an election in which the military holds a lot of power, so it's not like Suu Kyi's party can manipulate such an election

So now the military is violating the very Constitution that they themselves wrote

Its funny whenever Myanmar is mentioned, so many sheeples start talking about Rohingyas even though it is completely irrelevant to the actual topic. So are you all agreeing with the current situations in Myanmar right now along with millions of peoples' future going downhill under the new military dictatorship?

Please refer to my earlier post.

ASSK made a pact with the devil, the Myanmar fascist military, and all she got for it was the "honor" of becoming their puppet on a string and the invidious object of the world's opprobrium as a fallen idol with the blood of the Rohingya Holocaust on her hands.

Yes she did. She even got huffy and told the UN Hague tribunal there was no genocide against the Rohingya and that they should 'mind their own business'. ASSK is a murderess, a collaborator with the Myanmar military and she kissed their fannies. Now they're tossing her fanny out of the puppet seat.

Myanmar wasn't even developing towards a democracy in the first place, ASSK's coalition government was a sham to begin with. It's the same brutal oppressive totalitarian nation that it has been for over 60 years, it's the same crap with new face. It's just like the 1988 coup that replaced the 'Burmese Road to Socialism' with the SLORC. In 1989 Burma became Myanmar. Other that that, not a damn thing has changed over there since. Nothing.

Meet the new bosss, same as the old boss.

What a mess Myanmar is. Suu Kyi isn’t the saint she was made out to be.

That's a fact. After what she allowed to happen to the Rohingya she has forever lost my support.

The Rohingya Genocide is just that. ASSK allowed it to occur, she denied it altogether. Therefore she is a genocidal dictator monster herself. The worst part of it all is that Myanmar is getting away with it.

What a sad disappointment this woman turned out to be.

ASSK made a pact with the devil, the Myanmar fascist military

Are we ignoring a fact that the military has detained her? Which means, the military was in control all along and not her.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

She denied Rohingya as their citizen & allowed Army to be brutal to Rohingya and defend to Army

The Army was never under her control...and given this coup...it is clear that the Army was never under

her influence whether it being the Rohingya situation or anything else..

10 ( +13 / -3 )

So many unsympathetic idiots comments, not realizing how ASSK could've gotten killed if she were to say a word against military. Don't just use the word "genocide"? when you don't know the deep root causes of Rohingya crisis.

-10 ( +4 / -14 )

she was also friends with the muslim hating Victor Orban

Aung San Suu Kyi and Viktor Orbán discuss Muslim migration — Quartz (qz.com)

Aung San Suu Kyi and Viktor Orban bonded over a mutual dislike of Muslims

Suu Kyi and Viktor Orbán met yesterday (June 5) in Budapest, where the two leaders agreed that “coexistence with continuously growing Muslim populations” was a challenge for both countries, according to a statement by the Hungarian government.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

I agree with most of the above. ASSK was touted as a reformer and she was not at all. She was no different than the generals- the rohinga suffered under her just as badly.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

The military in Myanmar is made up of dinosaurs who refuse to bow to any higher authority. Not even Suu Kyi can do anything about it and what they did to Rohingya.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

All of you armchair quarterbacks should give her some leeway, after all, it's not like she can do everything at her will, the Military Junta still controls the country. We don't know what went on between her and the Military when the Rohingya crisis was unfolding. They most likely threatened her with something.

-8 ( +6 / -14 )

I knew Michael Aris, her husband. Really inteligent, well educated, brilliant. Knowing him and his worldview, I wonder what he'd say seeing his wife right now. The state she was in when he was dying and she couldn't be with him and the person she is know.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

It is not a coup. The military junta has been in holding the power all this while.

Now they show their true color. They have allowed 'guided democracy' to exist via elections in the past decade. Now they feel threatened, hence, putting Suu Kyi under house arrest again. Not surprising.

What next?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I'm torn between "That was fast" and "You lasted longer than I expected"...

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Wish the Rohingya could hear this good news after she sent solders to kill, rape, burn nearly a million citizens into asylum. Unfortunately the displaced Burmese Rohingya are being forced into a dangerous flood prone small island by Bangladesh. I think they don’t have tv, internet or telecommunications on a pile of sand.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

A military coup is a bad thing.

At the same time, Aung San Suu Kyi is a bad PM.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

She has the power to speak out against human rights abuses.

effectively speaking out against her own countries military, what do you think thatll get her!?

0 ( +10 / -10 )

Suu Kyi isn’t the saint she was made out to be.

well when the military still effective controls the country and can declare a coup anytime they like, she really doesnt have much power to do anything does she

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Everyone was duped into believing she was a saint.

8 ( +16 / -8 )

Aung San Suu Kyi did nothing to make a stable country for all country people.

She denied Rohingya as their citizen & allowed Army to be brutal to Rohingya and defend to Army.

She was grip of Army but acting as civil govt. not to lose her power, but now she is loser too.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

What a mess Myanmar is. Suu Kyi isn’t the saint she was made out to be.

That's a fact. After what she allowed to happen to the Rohingya she has forever lost my support. An even messier consideration is that the Myanmar military really wants to be out from under the thumb of China. Many of them hate the Chinese with a passion, consider the Chinese made aircraft they have as flying coffins, and there have been off and on fighting on the border with China. Their 2015 opening to the west was seen as peeling Myanmar away from China's grasp and bringing it closer to the west. That appears to be over and done with now.
