Tens of posts so far, digging and assessing the situation from every angle, except one: The idea of stopping the American provocations. The idea of leaving the peninsula, returning to where America belongs at the other side of the great ocean and allowing the Koreans at the south and at the north to coexist peacefully, without provocations and with mutual respect to each other's way of life. More than likely that this is posturing, and what we're in for is about 6 months of complete diplomatic silence, save for hysterical propaganda and agitation from North Korea, followed by North Korea sheepishly coming back to the negotiating table when the sanctions begin to really bite.

The response is sensible; any noticeable change in SK/UN military or diplomatic policy, particularly towards fortification, will play into this game. The best thing to do is to keep calm and carry on as normal, but remain vigilant for any acts of aggression by North Korea. If North Korea does anything, it will probably be to attack disputed waters and islands, and perhaps small acts of aggression by soldiers on the DMZ. In this case, and where there needs to be military retaliation, it should be confined to the case at hand.

This doesn't bode well though. North Korea is increasingly volatile, and even the most measured retaliation could send them on the path to all out war, which would be catastrophic for Korea (Seoul lies within range of North Korean V2s), and very bad news for any neighbours too.

Honestly is a complete suicide to commence a nuclear war against SK and US. What's the benefit of NK in launching missles against US bases? nothing.

So, I think that NK seeks attention, and should think twice before starting a kinda sort of nuclear war and they know it very well.

So, in my opinion I am not worried that much. Of course, we can think about those South Koreans are very scared from North's provocations almost every day... Empty words or not, they think to scare the entire world with those missles...tsk.

Kim must be getting the hint now that his supposed aggressive missiles put China, India, Pakistan and Russia within range (oh and a little bit of Alaska. [The 'State can shoot down the missiles over the Bering Straights.])

The 'States don't want to touch this with a ten foot pole. Kim is in deep enough kimshi with his immediate neighbors they don't need to.

This little country, with a population less than some cities in the area threatening by his missiles, is clearly asking to be swatted out of existence.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will negotiate, set up a puppet buffer country (it worked fine for China in Tibet) and the Kim dynasty, (special emphasis on the nasty,) will cease to exist.

Then the North Korean people can start living...

Why are America and China not negotiating a peaceful end to the 50 year state of war in Korea? As I see it, both the United States and China have vested interests that will benefit from this escalating threat of nuclear war. The imminent budget cutbacks to military spending in the US will likely be replaced by demands for increased spending for security. This will justify further suspension of human rights for the perpetual war on terror, including justification for the drone attacks. Obama's recent visit to Israel has prepared the way for a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, now made all the more imperative to prevent them achieving North Korea's threat level. Spending more money on the US military benefits American corporations, but since they are already running a deficit it also increases the US debt and undermines confidence in the American dollar, pushing the US towards default and increasing risk of inflation from devaluation of their currency. All of which elevates China's economy towards the number one position in the world. The lives of ordinary people mean nothing to the wealthy elites ruining our planet. Monopoly capitalism at its worst!

If you believe the media, you are way behind. The societies controlling government, economics, and the media, have favorable outcomes based on their propaganda.

It is political suicide for Kim Jong Un. Maybe it could redraw the maps again and one Korea would emerge. That is if several generation of misguided and oppressed NK people could assimilate.

Clearly NK has entered a new level of provocations and what appears to the rest of the world as suicidal insanity. The calm marked response of SK and US, as well as the downplaying in the media are appropriate. But those of us with half or more of brain know that we are taking full precautions and responding as if these nutty provocations are credible, and to be prepared for even an accidental unintended incident. Kim Jung-Un is laying the ground work for his undeniable absolute rule of the DPRK. He is now seen inside North Korea as being re-encarnate of his Grandfather Kim il Sung who was widely admired by the north korean people.

Not only does he have a striking resemblance to Kim il sung who also had a chubby apperance. Kim Jung-Un he is also following the same play book used by his father and grandfather. I believe N. Korean problem must be sorting out ASAP. There's no reason for waiting too long. North Korean regime took aid from West and S, Korea and then they have bitten hands of peoples who feed their country. China should take care of North Korean. Now North Korean has limited capacity in Nuclear Warfare and full capacity of Chemical Warfare. If you wait until full Nuclear Warfare capacity and then it will be too late. There's no prospect of peaceful engagement with North Korea whoever come to power. The world must accept the regime need to change immediately in North Korea otherwise the regime will be continuing behave like Mafia and blackmail its neighbor. I won’t be surprised if the idiot over weight fatty Kim Jong-un sleeps inside nuclear bunker at night.

Part of me wants them to keep pushing so that it will eventually lead to the destruction of the nutty regime, and the long suffering North Korean people can join the 21st century and be welcomed to the world.

The sad part about that is that it's only going to happen at the cost of many, many lives.

One thing that is kinda funny is that the two Koreas have been in a state of war since the end of the Korean War. All that was signed then was a cease fire.

Last week, the US Navy shipped my oldest son who is in the reserves from the US to Pusan to set up operations in the event of a conflct so the US military is taking this matter quite seriously. A month ago he was told he was going to Seoul but they changed that order last week and he was told that if North Korea goes to war and crosses the border, Seoul will be overrun and laid to waste and Pusan is a better staging point for the US to wage war with the NK's. I hope this is only saber rattling and Kim Jong Un trying to show he is as bad as his dad and granddad.
