Funny thing. I was thinking that the Spratly Islands were going to be the next "big" flashpoint about 20 years ago. Never happened.

One of the things I am coming to notice during this era of increasing interdependence is that there is a lot of money to be made by people with all kinds of interests. This will continue to be true. And shooting wars are bad for business in this part of Asia. It is a good enough reason to avoid them.

Same goes for North Korea, of course. Its emphasis on conflict has been really bad for business. What a loser. Virtually pinned among four vibrant and rich economies, its people live like cavemen. Anyone reading this has more access to uncensored information in one hour than the average North Korean will see in a lifetime. You could buy more at a convenience store with cash from the ATM outside than a North Korean laborer could get his hands on in three or four decades. Education? Here you get a loan and do it. There you can forget about it.

Tensions? Yeah, there will be tension. North Korea wants to survive in this world on its terms, and the world is not going to change. They just don't get it. They are jockeying to get some aid to make it through next YEAR. Everyone else is building power plants and infrastructure for the next three decades.

This is a country with a GDP that is 1/3 that of Nagano's supporting the largest military force in the world (uniformed personnel?). How long is that going to last?

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

I can't think of a better time for a coup. Can you?

To me this is scary...hope nothing comes of it..did anyone read an article on Fidel Castro claiming the U.S was who sunk the S.K ship?

Maybe they are not helping "meaning the U.S " with the nuclear tensions but to claim it was the U.S who did it, wonder where this is coming from..
