"Kim Jong-Un, who oversaw Wednesday's launch"

He must be a techical wizard!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Think the ones that oversaw the failed launch are now fighting over rats in the gulag. The current ones knew they had to succeed to go to gulag as well. It is a big motivator! Anyhow what more can be done? Place them on double warning or something?

Finally, THE PEOPLE get HBO, The Playboy Channel, and the Food Network!!! Ye~ah!!

The puppet of China. If war is ever going to start in S.E. Asia, it will be by China who will manipulate N.Korea into launching missiles at it's neighbors. Why? So China can claim all the oil and gas deposits in the S. China Seas.

Yep. N.Korea is developing ICBMs. China is giving N.Korea food and economic support.

At some point, the U.S., Japan, and S. Korea are going to have to come to terms w/ the fact that China has no intention of ever reigning in the North. So the next issue is how far do we let the North go down this path without doing anything. Does anybody believe that the North won't sell this tech to anybody with cash?

More to the point, the U.S. has been patiently waiting for the North to collapse in on itself for 20 years thus negating the need for action. As an American, I have supported this position because none of the developments fundamentally undercut regional security, until now. I cannot imagine any President of either party allowing the North to deploy missiles that could reliably hit the U.S.

The U.N. Action seems to have run its course in terms of effectiveness and now it may be time to turn the screws ourselves. Step one: Shut down all their international banking access, all of it now. Last time this really seemed to get their attention. Step two: begin actually enforcing the PSI aggressively. Anything coming out by sea or air gets searched if at all possible. Step three: Begin contemplating what to do when step two fails to get results.

Well, I guess all those who claimed it was a missile and not a rocket with a satellite have been proven wrong. As to launching MORE satellites, I think NK would be better to take this success and sit back for a while with it, build on their tech, and for the love of god feed their people!!

Well, I guess all those who claimed it was a missile and not a rocket with a satellite have been proven wrong.

Only if your criteria for a successful satellite launch is that they put anything into a lower Earth orbit. There's quite a difference between a functioning satellite in a stable orbit and a dummy payload. We'll have to wait a couple of weeks before we know for certain what the Norks put up there. In the meantime how convenient it is for them that regardless of whether it's a satellite or a 100kg bust of KJU in orbit it's still a successful test of their ballistic missile program...

smith, the carrier is pretty much the same, whether there is a "satellite" (I'm sure it was just a box with concrete blocks in it anyway) or a nuclear warhead perched atop it.

Either way, NK wouldn't be stupid enough to actually launch a nuclear missile at the US, Japan or any of its other allies. You can be sure that anti-missile defense tech will be beefed up immensely by the time the Norks miniaturize the warhead technology required, and the main fact is that any missile launch aimed at the US is guaranteed to bring a rain of nukes down on Pyongyang and wipe the country off the planet before the NK missile gets halfway over the Pacific.

Just what the world needs. More space junk orbiting the earth.

With any luck a meteor will take it out.

tokyo-star any large scale atomic attack on North Korea will yield radioactive fallout on Japan and South Korea.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

well, even if nukes aren't used, thousands of conventional missiles will flatten the country - the point is that a nuke launch by NK will be tantamount to suicide. Unfortunately I'm not so sure how long Seoul will hold out, with hundreds of NK missile batteries already pointed at the city.

the best partner of china to coorperate with its...., how do you think about the handicap ignorant reacts as it first to know how to walk

Well if NK can put a missile or satellite into space, the obviously they have the means to take care of their people in regards to food production. I say that all food aid is cut off. Let their leaders worry about feeding their people and taking care of their sick and hungry since they are advanced enough now.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I feel that is the only course of action left. The regime will either focus on feeding its own people, or the masses will revolt out of pure hunger. Another possible outcome of total sanctions is the 2012/2013 version of Pearl Harbor.

two days after Pyongyang’s long-range rocket launch triggered global outrage and U.N. condemnation.

Outrage in the US doesn't mean "Global" ;-))

Kim Jong-Un was born idiot , people in his country don't have electricity and food to consume and this moron is sending rockets on space . Hope to see trade embargo on N.Korea also just like what they did with Iran .

China needs to come clean on their stance on the DPRK, if China is really behind this stupid regime, the whole world should BOY COT everything from CHINA ASAP!

Not if the wind is blowing towards Beijing that day.

NK missile tech was transferred from Iran. Where did Iran get that tech? Likely from US or Russia! Their aerospace tech are most advanced in the world. The whole world do not care where the goods come from as far as cheap & reliable.

Well, I guess all those who claimed it was a missile and not a rocket with a satellite have been proven wrong.

Actually, it doesn't prove anybody wrong. ICBMs use the same type launch vehicles as do satellite launches. That was the point of the U.N. Resolution prohibiting N.K. from conducting ballistic missile OR SATELLITE development. Pop quiz, that was a three-stage launch that put an object into orbit. What about the first two stages? I guarantee you that NK was more interested in where the second stage landed than whether the dummy load at the top of the third stage entered orbit. They compared their predicted landing zone with the actual to evaluate how useful the rocket would be as a weapon delivery vehicle.

For those saying China was behind this, I need to point out that China was part of the UNANIMOUS U.N. Security Council Resolution that prohibited N.K. from doing this very thing. So if they were helping N.K. with the launch, that would be like slapping their own faces with N.K.'s gauntlet.

All seems to be going really well for the young Leader lately: a successful satelite launch, Time Magazine named him 'Man of the Year' and The Onion named him 'The sexiest man alive'. I can only say: Congratulations Mr Kim!

USNinJapan2 with the track record would you place anything expensive on top of it? Dummy Loads are often used when testing new boosters. When NASA tests their boosters they use boiler plate loads first.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

China, Russia, and the U.N's policy help supporting the dictators of N.Korea at the expenses of millions N.Koreans. No surprise, they all play their own self interest card game; and it is not about peace and prosperity at all. No cheer, but hell!

Let's all keep Kim and carry on.

North Korea is just looking for a war in my opinion. they know that the UN would not likely attack them if they don't send a missile on someone elses territory.

Would I use a dummy load if I had the DPRK's track record? No, obviously. But then again I'm not a North Korean. Rational nations and space agencies, like the U.S. and NASA, do take practice steps using dummy loads in test launches. Not the DPRK though. The U.S./NASA also doesn't claim a successful working satellite launch when they launch a dummy payload for test purposes. It's the DPRK's own claim that they have successfully placed an earth observation/meteorology satellite into orbit. Not mine.

Correction: I mean to say, "Yes, obviously."

Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans held a mass rally on Friday to celebrate the nuclear-armed state’s rocket launch

When the NK government tells you it is time to celebrate, you celebrate whether there is really anything to celebrate or not.
