The man knew he was really taking a gamble walking through that mine field. There are thousands of them. All I can say is LUCKY. I hope the guy can find peace and happiness, but if and there is a high possibility they regulate his family to the infamous camps or they could also be executed.

C Harald Hansen:
If other defectors are to be believed, they absolutely will. It is concentration camp now for the rest of their lifes for all his immediat relatives. I hope he can live with that.
This brutal punishment is actually the main deterrent for defectors.

N and S have been negotiating reunification SK must be introgating this soldier severely now if SK believes existence of land mine. Who enabled him to avoid landmine and entered SK

For freedom. Yeah,it's not so unusual you know. Incredible desperation @its finest hour. Hope this young x-soldier finds his light in a free and democratic South Korea.
C Harald Hansen
I hope they don't go after his family.

The North Korean side has full of mines. They're putting more in to stop soldiers like this from crossing. It's a miracle he didn't trip one of them.
On the other hand, the South Korean side has been uninstalling them over the last few decades.

@WilliBJUN. 15, 2015 - 04:04PM JST Across the minefields of the DMZ?

I think it is not the minefield there. Allred and other women came across DMZ and no news reported they were dead. Their bus just came across. Please check what DMZ means.

And now he gets to go to Disneyland and Lotte Land and McDonalds. If that happens too soon, he might want to escape back the other way.
Good luck and enjoy freedom my friend. Not as free as you think, but sure beats living under the dictatorship of Dough Boy.

Good for the teenage soldier, but his family members have for sure been arrested and hopefully they won't be executed.

DMZ obviously not that secure.....

Across the minefields of the DMZ? Wow, that takes guts or incredible desperation.

He probably would have made it across more quickly if it were not for the two humongous stones he apparently was carrying in his sack.
ReformedBasher
Depends where he crossed.
Lizz
Assuming he killed the guards and everyone around him first which would have made it a lot easier to walk.

Wow, I'm glad he made it. It says that he 'walked' across the border but I think it's safe to assume that he frantically ran for his life.
