they should pay taxes if they want to enjoy any public services.

Glad to see them getting back what is theirs by non-violent means. I am just sad to see they are not bankrupting the people who stole their lands in the process. Sadly, those people are already dead and cannot be made to atone for their crimes, not on this world anyway.

We need something like this to happen in Canada.

numbskull, I see you have no understandin' of American history either.

For the record, pre-Columbian American was a horrific place for many native peoples... kidnappin', rape, massacres, slavery, land grabs...

And you speak of native Americans as nancy boys who couldn't put up a good fight. I speak better of them than you.

Are you aware American Indians fought for the Confederacy in our Civil War (as many others fought for the Union)? Do you know that some of these tribes fought for the Confederacy because they were slave owners?

So much you don't know, numbskull. Walk on to any American Indian land today numbskull and try to take down the Stars and Stripes. I gotta admit I'd pay good money to see what happens to you next. Good money, my friend.

It's pathetic that they are being forced to purchase land that is rightfully theirs and it's even more pathetic that the government is trying to block them from putting their land in trust!

Do the local governments of these states have no shame at all? Clearly they are willing to go to almost any lengths for tax money, even harassing the native tribes (again and again, might I add).

Kudos to the judge who threw out their suit against the tribes! It's bad enough they are being forced to PAY for their own land, coming after them for taxes is just rubbing salt in the wounds.

Once they buy the land, they shouldn't have to pay state taxes. They also should provide their own utility services like water and sewage, not the town's, to be fair.

Are you offering to increase your own taxes to pay for services for the land? If not, well then I guess you just hate Native Americans.

The above statement is related to the fate of the native population in a broad way, and extends from the particular context of buying back the lands in what is now Nebraska. Since the above statement is not considered off topic, a reaction to it should likewise not be considered off topic.

YG, actually that statement was in response to those who think American Indians were passive peoples livin' in paradise until whitey showed up.

Afterwards, folks on both sides would violently break treaties and conflicts intermittently continued.

Very true. While Europeans won the war, there was lots of blood spilled on both sides. It wasn't just whitey coming in and stealing the land. Thats a very one sided view of history. Painting everything with rose colored glasses to avoid noticing the dirt. I don't say this to excuse what happened to them, but its important to see what the truth is, rather then to simply believe the lies.

Finally, the land in question, isn't the tribes. You can claim it was "stolen" from them, and to an extent you'd be right. That still doesn't mean the current owners should have to give up their land. Allow me to give you an example. Lets say you have something really beautiful that your grandmother gave to you. All of a sudden some stranger shows up and claims it was stolen from his great grandfather. Your Great-Grandfather, bought it, gave it to his daughter, who passed it to you. So... Who does it belong to? Thats essentially what this is. Claims on land that belonged to Indians at one time, because of treaties signed years ago. The terms of which have since been violated, frequently by both parties. So, the question is, who does that land belong to? Should the treaty be enforced? Should those who currently own the land, just have it taken from them? And why should Indians be allowed to take land, turn it into trust land, and the various governments that support the area, then not receive any tax benefit from it?
