If you were American, you would know that we have economic interest in the world not turning into a dictatorship cabal. Particularly Japan would not exist if the dictators get their way. Most downvotes I've ever seen.

Good fences make good neighbors.

The US should take a cue from Finland on this.

It already did.

The last time a US president did this, he was branded a racist and xenophobe and all that.

Never mind that he specifically promised gates and doors in his wall, through which people on both sides could pass in a legal and orderly manner.

His detractors just didn't want to hear that. The deafening noise from their own shrieks drowned it out.

I'm surprised that this comments board isn't teeming with messages saying how "racist" the Finns are for actually wanting a secure border -- and actually putting up a wall (or a fence in this case) to bring it about.

But at least the Finns don't post mean tweets

Talk about grasping at straws for an argument. Hysterical partisanship here.

The walls have closed in on a serious discussion here.

He promised a lot of things, none of which actually happened. Sure was a lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ for nothing.

Finland fought a stiff war with Russia in WW2.. and we’re sold out by the west. (Pre Russia ally period). Because they were sold out by France UK, Sweden. The Nazis saw an opportunity to arm Finland. For obviously reasons. Finland has every right to worry about the Russian bear.

if you look at how Russia fought that war and todays in Ukraine, you can see some similarities. Russia doesn’t have to focus on quality because it has the quantity. And it understands they can run an attrition war they could loose 5x the armory or jets, knowing eventually Ukraine will run out. I hope we don’t let that happen.

Which European country? Finland?

So Finland wants to prevent Russians who don’t want to fight them from escaping Russia. who will then force them to fight?

you didn’t think that one through, did you?

They should have said they’ll make Russia pay for it.

Sure, I did. But I didn’t see any need to bring it down to dumb level, when I knew you’d be shuffling along any minute.

Russia, China, Iran & North Korea deserve each other.

What a gang!

Finland has chosen wisely.

Imatra is located a mere seven kilometers (4.4 miles) off the Russian industrial town of Svetogorsk in the Karelia region

Interesting how people here are talking about WW2. This was the Finnish Winter War. Finland lost Karelia to Russia, and the Karelians moved into Finland, and now makes up a large proportion of Finlands population. Now they are setting up a fence to Karelia, that used to be their own territory. As for WW2, as Finland was occupied by the Nazi, some of these Karelians escaped to Sweden, that offered a safe haven. We did not set up a fence to keep our neighbors out. If Sweden had not offered a safe haven, many Karialians and Finns would not be alive today. There are still a large portion of Finns in Sweden.

Now they are setting up a fence to Karelia, that used to be their own territory.

Because for the foreseeable future Finns have little hope that they will get back their stolen territory of Karelia. So in the meantime, they have little choice but to put up the fence: RUSSIANS KEEP OUT!

The Finnish population of Karelia was removed at the end of the Winter War and the region repopulated with soviet citizens. Since then the area has become a virtual wasteland, and while there are some Finns of Karelian extract who would like to go ‘home’, the home they knew no longer exists, and what there is would be a burden on Finland if it were returned.

The last time a US president did this, he was branded a racist and xenophobe and all that.

The previous US President was branded a racist and xenophobe for calling all Hispanic immigrants rapists and murderers. Those of us who live, work, buy from, rent to or otherwise interact with these very same immigrants on a daily basis know from direct first person experience that his accusation are not true and are in fact based entirely on racism. Those who repeat his "rationale" are equally bigoted.

As for building walls, it is a waste of time. Even the tallest walls on the US Mexico border are routinely climbed. Adding height to walls touted as "unclimbable" has only resulted in an increase in high impact trauma from people falling from these very walls.

The twin parallel seven meter tall border fences between Morocco and the Spanish possessions of Ceuta and Melilla are equally ineffective at stopping determined border crossers.
