If they wanted him dead, they could do it now.

He'll be released and back on his soapbox in a few days.

A great man. His videos of homes of the corrupt among Putin's wealthy Mandarins, and descriptions of the corrupt basis of that wealth - were mind blowing.

Insufficiently appreciated in his own country, due to Putin's skill with Goebbel's BIG LIE manipulation to keep himself in power and demonize - or murder - any opposition, or any journalists brave enough to tell the truth.

What's happening to an 'opponent' of Putin the autocrat must greatly please anti-democracy, pro-authoritarian groups around the globe. Not me.

In the US look at the messes the failed authoritarian-wannabe Trump is leaving behind. Look right now at the 'security' forces required around the country to protect peaceful citizens from Trump's heavily armed and violent (see Trump's failed - and deadly - coup attempt) anti-democracy, pro-authoritarian militias and mobs.

Remember authoritarianism brought the world to war in 1930. The world needs to fight the pandemic today, not each other.

Navalny is a brave man and Putin is a pathetic criminal.

My sympathies with the Russian people, cannot be easy having a lout for a President!!!

I wish Navalny was the shining beacon of hope. Sincerely.

Unfortunately, he has dodgy far right connections and has come out with a number of worrying statements over the years.

Interesting article from some years ago

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/07/is-aleksei-navalny-a-liberal-or-a-nationalist/278186/

Navalny has participated in the annual Russian March, a parade uniting Russian nationalist groups of all stripes. He has also endorsed a nationalist-led campaign called Stop Feeding the Caucasus that has called for ending federal subsidies to the "corrupt" and "ineffective" governments of Chechnya and other North Caucasus republics. He has at various times called for deporting illegal immigrants and introducing a visa regime for the countries of Central Asia. Engelina Tareyeva, who worked with Navalny when he was a member of the liberal Yabloko party before he was expelled in 2007, has accused him of routinely using racial slurs and basing his relations with people on their ethnicity. "I consider Aleksei Navalny the most dangerous man in Russia," Tareyeva has written. "You don't have to be a genius to understand that the most horrific thing that could happen in our country would be the nationalists coming to power."

At least he'll be imprisoned for something he had indeed done.

And before anyone points me to the ECHR judgments on this issue, yes, of course I have read them. They are basically a case of ECHR going ultra vires. Countries expect to have to modify laws concerning freedom of speech & assembly, or improve prison conditions to ECHR rulings. The ECHR twisting arms on the basics of crimes against property and civil (as in contract et al) law, not so much.

Skilful con artist, who started with dodgy financial schemes (for which he got a suspended prison sentence) and then whent for real money - to the politics. But the level of his support is so low that his main audience are schoolkids from whom he incessantly solicit donations. This "fighter with corruption" does not have a job, but enjoys a luxury life - vacations at foreign resorts several times a year, expensive vines and lobsters. Good they arrest him, prison is where he belongs.

And for all his supporters here I have a better idea, a more noble cause: fight for freedom of Assange!

The biggest Russian con artist is Putin who went from KGB zero to worth more than $100+ billion with palaces, yachts, air planes. Put-in himself in power until 2036.

Western countries back the unforgivable treatment of journalist Assange, but glorify this dissident. Free Helicopter flight to Germany, special medical treatment, expenses...

no sharing of information from NATO. Surviving a weapon that kills all exposed?

(never been to Russia and I’m not a bot.)

What “unforgivable treatment”?

@zichi

Putin who went from KGB zero to worth more than $100+ billion with palaces, yachts, air planes

Can you share with the world your profound knowledge of Putin's "100+ billion" bank accounts? Photos of his "palaces, yachts, airplanes"?

No need to because a simple search brings up reports on Putin's wealth. It's public knowledge more than profound.

because a simple search brings up reports on Putin's wealt

Can you provide links? On exact information, not the usual empty speculations.

My sympathies with the Russian people, cannot be easy having a lout for a President!!!

In it's entire history has Russia ever been a force for good? To the best of my knowledge Russia has always been malevolent, governed by violent leaders and scheming against or at war with its neighbors.

It helped the right side win WW2.

“Russia helped the right side in WW2”?

You mean Russia did the lions share of winning WW2!

80% of Nazi casualties were on the Eastern front.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

It helped win the war. But then Stalin turned on his own people and imprisoned millions, and killed millions.

Back on topic please.

@toasted heretic

I did a search about Navalny's racism and boy, he is really no Gandhi.

Using racists slurs, dismissive of women.... Russians do have it tough!!!

One one hand you have a criminal like Putin and on the other a bigot like Navalny....

Reports in the media and a released video showing Putin's palace with very extensive grounds and land.
