House clerk is the presiding officer of the house, until a speaker is chose

McCarthy,my Speakership is melting,damn damn

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Third vote now, still lost. What a clown show.

I kept hearing about how everything was going to change once Kevin got the gavel.

Counting your chickens and all that.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

The GOP can’t even vote for the clear choice from their own party to be speaker of the House and they expect us to believe they have the competency to run a country? I don’t think any Republicans could run a bath.

17 ( +19 / -2 )

I love to see how the medieval hypocrites of the pathetic GOP can't agree on something..

Divided, obsolete and aimless...

Being part of the MAGA gang will bring them many more problems..

What a pathetic circus..

LOL !!..

16 ( +17 / -1 )

“If you want to drain the swamp you can't put the biggest alligator in control of the exercise,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

Business leaders who get into politics are usually swampier than the deepest Washington insider. Case in point: Gaetz.

“He eagerly dismissed us,” said Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.

Cue Curb Your Enthusiasm theme music.

The Democrats are quite effective in marginalizing their very popular democratic socialist contingent.

They go forward with a neo-liberal agenda while presenting the evangelical/ Christian Nationalist MAGA reps as the other alternative.

The Republican leadership could take notes from the Democratic leadership in how to corral and undermine factions of their party. But the MAGA contingent is a clear and present danger of seizing power.

Bass4 ,where is the Great Republicans hope

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Those people who were rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of the GOP controlling the House and couldn't stop mentioning it must be feeling so proud.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

In other news, Welcome to Congress, Rep FUPA AKA Santos (if that indeed is your real name).

What a freak show.

Good old Kevin riding that Pink Shart.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Bass4 ,where is the Great Republicans hope

The rank and file cultists haven’t been given their talking points about how chaos and disorder is good, actually.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

The Democrats are quite effective in marginalizing their very popular democratic socialist contingent.

Through concessions, every dog loves a juicy bone.

They go forward with a neo-liberal agenda while presenting the evangelical/ Christian Nationalist MAGA reps as the other alternative.

So that’s why the Dems lost the House, they realized the alternative.

The Republican leadership could take notes from the Democratic leadership in how to corral and undermine factions of their party.

Don’t make me laugh.

But the MAGA contingent is a clear and present danger of seizing power.

Not at all, they’re the savior of putting the brakes on this party.

-22 ( +0 / -22 )

First time in 100 years. What an achievement and surely a great start to a new era /s

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Those people who were rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of the GOP controlling the House and couldn't stop mentioning it must be feeling so proud.

It’ll feel better once a speaker is found, but yes, the feeling is exhilarating.

-21 ( +1 / -22 )

Through concessions, every dog loves a juicy bone.

Kevin tried that. What do you think is happening in those closed door meetings? It isn’t working. Those crazy maga dogs want more than bones.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

A great start to the new year with the Republicans taking charge of the House.

Democrats are still scratching their heads as to how they lost it.

-14 ( +1 / -15 )

Kevin tried that. What do you think is happening in those closed door meetings? It isn’t working. Those crazy maga dogs want more than bones.

They want new meat, natural without any artificial ingredients or bi-products, especially government issued.

-16 ( +0 / -16 )

A great start to the new year with the Republicans taking charge of the House.

Taking charge? Lol. Read the article.

Democrats are still scratching their heads as to how they lost it.

You mean losing the House? That thing that has happened in almost every midterm in US history? Yeah, a real head scratcher.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

The House adjourns without a speaker - and without swearing in new members.

Laughable.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

bass4funkToday 07:51 am JST

It’ll feel better once a speaker is found, but yes, the feeling is exhilarating.

Even if they never find out I daresay you'll say the same thing.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Since the house is adjourned, they have no authority to declare war

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

The vote for Speaker requires a majority of the members present, no necessarily of all members of the House.

One possibility is for some members of the Freedom Caucus deciding that doing constituency work on Wednesday is more important than voting for the Speaker.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Trump's legacy is a divided and chaotic Congress, rather like his own term in office.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Sorry, you’re all over the place, but if you are referring to McCarthy then yes, that is true.

So you’re looking forward to the election of McCarthy, someone you agree is a liar, an idiot and a craven self-server, as speaker?

Why?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

“If you want to drain the swamp you can't put the biggest alligator in control of the exercise,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

Spoke one swamp-dwelling denizen of another. But how much longer must we wait before the Floridian mud shark himself is reeled in by the AG and fished out to face justice for preying on young women? The chaotic start in Congress is the natural knock-on effect occasioned by the toxic shenanigans of the MAGA-twisted GOP. Judging from this clown show it looks like it's going to be a bumper year for popcorn sales, if not for orange jump suits, cuffs and shackles.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

painkillerToday  08:01 am JST

A great start to the new year with the Republicans taking charge of the House.

Democrats are still scratching their heads as to how they lost it.

Have you actually checked the news today?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Bob FosseToday  08:07 am JST

You mean losing the House? That thing that has happened in almost every midterm in US history? Yeah, a real head scratcher.

Actual registered voters who had a say in the election probably used that as one of their many excuses too,

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

And so the GOP civil war gets going.

I have my popcorn. I wonder if the MAGA or the sane will win out. It's good for the Dems either way - if MAGA wins over the RINOs, MAGA can never win an election again. If the RINOs win over MAGA, the country returns to a bit of sanity. End whichever wins, it's likely the other group drags them down so much that neither wins, and the democrats take it all.

There is no losing with the GOP civil war for the Democrats. Other than their the lack of leadership coming from their government of course, due to the GOP being too busy fighting, to actually do something for the people of the country.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Democrats are still scratching their heads as to how they lost it.

I think Democrats, after expecting to lose by a landslide, are laughing at having held of the "red tsunami" enough that the GOP don't even have enough votes tobe able to agree on a speaker, when the Democrats cleanly elected their leaders weeks ago.

The last time this happened, it took 3 months to decide upon a speaker. That bodes well for the American people.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

So you’re looking forward to the election of McCarthy, someone you agree is a liar,

I never said that nor believe that. I like the guy actually, I just don’t think he is the right man for the speaker position. Now if he becomes speaker, I hope he’s pushed and guided to not falter in front of the Dems and to make sure he does things like cut the massive spending that the Dems were pushing non-stop and stopping Biden’s agenda.

an idiot and a craven self-server, as speaker?

Why?

Sorry, those are your distorted words, I just feel he doesn’t have a spine and will push through an unrepentant Republican agenda, especially when it comes to the committee assignments.

-13 ( +2 / -15 )

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy failed in marathon voting Tuesday to become House speaker, a historic defeat with no clear way out as House Republicans dug in for a long, messy start for the new Congress.

Welcome to the start of the Great Repub Revolution....a failure!

Needing 218 votes in the full House, McCarthy got just 203 in two rounds — less even than Democrat Hakeem Jeffries in the GOP-controlled chamber.

HAHAHAHA! The Repubs get the House and A DEM gets more votes than McCarthy - double failure!

A third ballot was underway as night fell on the new House GOP majority, tensions rising as all other business came to a halt.

Welcome to the next two years - inter-Repub war...

McCarthy had pledged a “battle on the floor” for as long as it took to overcome right-flank fellow Republicans who were refusing to give him their votes. But it was not at all clear how the embattled GOP leader could rebound after becoming the first House speaker nominee in 100 years to fail to win the gavel with his party in the majority.

One more humiliation to add to McCarthy's long list...the first Speaker nominee that failed to win with his party in the majority...

Thank you MAGA-Repubs for giving us our first example of your inability to govern...

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Sometimes it takes time to do things right and make the correct choice.

-17 ( +1 / -18 )

So McCarthy is stuck. He can't get to power unless he gives others, including just one member, the right to call a vote to remove him. So to get in he has to create a door where anyone can throw him out. What a mess and uniquely Republican.

Not really surprising when you have a suicide squad in your GOP membership. It also points to the fact the GOP is more interested in headlines than governing, and is another reason why DeSantis will be so attractive.

This will be fun to watch play out. You have some members who built a reputation on "never compromise" even when the ship is sinking around them. I'll throw them some popcorn as I'm all out of life preservers.

Let the GOP bloodbath begin! I couldn't wait for this day! The people voted the Dems into the White House and increased our lead in the Senate and the GOP's razor win is stuck in reverse. If the people respected Republicans and their leadership ability, they'd have a lot more power.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Strangerland: RINOs, MAGA

It makes you wonder who Republicans are these days. MAGAs won't call themselves Republicans. Anyone who is close to being a traditional Republican has been called a RINO, so they're not real GOP. Lots of people say they're independent nowadays as a way to support Republicans but can sidestep the baggage when it suits them.

Republicans used to say their party with pride. Now it's hard to find one who says it or one who is taken seriously when he says it. It's just MAGAs vs RINOs vs Independents vs Republicans.

What a mess.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

I never said that nor believe that.

Yes you did. That’s how the other poster describes him, and you said, “that’s true”.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Just queue up all the posts from our pro-Trump friends over the past two months;

"Just wait - two more months", "Just a month left", "That will change in two weeks", "One more week and Kevin gets the gavel"....

But Kevin didn't get the gavel, he got the shaft...

ROFL...

8 ( +8 / -0 )

@Blacklabel: You'd the think the GOP who had this sewn up in November would have had this sorted by now.

What a joke. Whole party needs a reboot. If I was American, I'd be a Republican. I'm from the UK and a Conservative but did recognise from 1997-2005 how broken the party was,

5 ( +5 / -0 )

House clerk can decide by a plurality of the vote ,making Jefferies the Speaker

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

All this infighting rather than focusing on improving the people's lives should win the Republicans more votes for 2024, right? People like extremist politics and grievance campaigns, right?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Sometimes it takes time to do things right and make the correct choice.

What happened to “Stop the count”?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

No surprise to see the conservatives not having any clarity as their agenda is about lies and false narratives. The infighting is funny and juvenile, very much a MAGA thing.

The RINO’s have no backbone and we’re MAGA’s till they figured out after being slammed in the face with an insurrection, gee maybe we are liars but not as big as Trump wants us to be.

Pathetic people, the GOP.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

They want new meat, natural without any artificial ingredients or bi-products, especially government issued.

The MAGA wing of the GOP is not really interested in governing. It’s interested in disruption and media circuses. Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, to name but two, are attention hounds care about getting in the news and the best way they know how is by being as absurdly extreme as possible.

This is just the beginning. McCarthy will get his little rattle, but not after agreeing to a blanket investigation of the Biden admin and Hunter and Fauci—i.e. another media circus. It won’t win the GOP any new friends.

LOL

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Still in charge. just a matter of selecting the correct leader amongst us for the next 2 years.

fail to plan, plan to fail. So we putting a little extra time into it now to see expectations, not a big deal.

-15 ( +0 / -15 )

So McCarthy is stuck. He can't get to power unless he gives others, including just one member, the right to call a vote to remove him. So to get in he has to create a door where anyone can throw him out. What a mess and uniquely Republican.

Not a mess, full accountability underscoring.

Not really surprising when you have a suicide squad in your GOP membership. It also points to the fact the GOP is more interested in headlines than governing,

No, they want him to stick to his gun and not focus so much for concessions

and is another reason why DeSantis will be so attractive.

Either him or Trump, both are fine.

Let the GOP bloodbath begin! I couldn't wait for this day!

It’ll be over soon.

The people voted the Dems into the White House and increased our lead in the Senate and the GOP's razor win is stuck in reverse.

But you can’t do anything without money, even my kids know this, I hold the cash, (that’s why Pelosi lost) I reign supreme. They’ll be fine, might get cut up and bruised but I’ll be over in several days.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

Still in charge. just a matter of selecting the correct leader amongst us for the next 2 years.

In charge and can't even agree upon a leader.

Talk about a disaster of a party.

That plus Trump plus your election denial should win you 2024, right?

...right?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

in charge. just a matter of selecting the correct leader amongst us for the next 2 years

The GOP needs a level head.. Someone like Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, Lauren Boebert, Gym Jordan, or Matty Gaetz! Someone who can stick it to the libs while worshipping Donald Trump—at the same time!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

bass: It’ll be over soon.

How do you see it playing out? I don't think Trump's boy McCarthy can win an any capacity unless he gives in to the hardliners, and by doing that, he loses by putting himself into instant jeopardy. It also shows the extend GOP leadership will go to appease a small number of radicals in their base.

Either him or Trump, both are fine.

You'll stay a Trump fan up until the point where DeSantis starts to lead in the primaries then you'll toss Trump to the side and hitch on with the eventual winner. Guaranteed.

But you can’t do anything without money

Just how do you expect the GOP stopping the flow of money? By making demands and threatening to shut down the government or default on our debts? Are you now officially suicide squad as well?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Kevin seems to understand something you don’t, Bass. He’s looking at 2024 and the god awful electoral landscape Senate Dems face there. He realizes the only chance Senate Dems have is if this GOP majority House actually does what you want it to.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

Kevin seems to understand something you don’t, Bass. He’s looking at 2024

Of course he is and given the unpopularity of this administration and this President, I doubt he would be elected to run a lemonade stand.

and the god awful electoral landscape Senate Dems face there. He realizes the only chance Senate Dems have is if this GOP majority House actually does what you want it to.

The infighting for a speaker will probably stop in a few days, they’ll get it done.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

By Tuesday evening, McCarthy was dealt three embarrassing losses...

Isn't it three strikes and you're out?

But the resistance to his speakership is being led by even more committed Trump supporters, such as Rep. Matt Gaetz

So is Gaetz right?

Meanwhile, far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, usually an ally of Gaetz, emerged as a seemingly unlikely supporter of McCarthy. “If the base only understood that 19 Republicans voting against McCarthy are playing Russian roulette with our hard earned Republican majority right now,”

Or is MTG right?

“It makes us look foolish,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, complained on Fox News. “If I didn't know any better, it's like the Democrats paid these people off.”

Oh my goodness - a Repub accuses his fellow Repubs of opposing McCarthy because they were paid off by Dems - do the Trump supporters here agree?

Adding to Tuesday’s somewhat surreal scene was the presence of George Santos, the newly elected Republican lawmaker from Long Island, who appears to have invented most of his life story. Seeing that members of the media were gathered in front of his new office in the Capitol complex, Santos promptly fled.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-house-democrats-revel-in-gop-disarray-as-mc-carthy-speakership-bid-flounders-224051443.html

I imagine there are a lot of Repubs that would like to run away and hide now...

What a clown show...

5 ( +5 / -0 )

“We” have same exact margin of victory as “you” did up until yesterday.

“you” supposedly had a mandate, so why wouldn’t “we”?

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

“We” have same exact margin of victory as “you” did up until yesterday.

Heh, do you? Then why can't your team choose a leader? The dems did it in one vote, weeks ago.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

fail to plan, plan to fail. So we putting a little extra time into it now to see expectations, not a big deal.

They’ve had three months. This level of incompetence in planning has literally never been seen in a century. How much more time do you guys need?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

How do you see it playing out?

Fine.

I don't think Trump's boy McCarthy can win an any capacity unless he gives in to the hardliners, and by doing that, he loses by putting himself into instant jeopardy. It also shows the extend GOP leadership will go to appease a small number of radicals in their base.

For a speakership accountability, it’s a huge thing.

You'll stay a Trump fan up until the point where DeSantis starts to lead in the primaries then you'll toss Trump to the side

Hardly, it’s still a win, win with either men

https://legalinsurrection.com/2023/01/vanity-fair-desantis-is-worse-than-trump/

Just how do you expect the GOP stopping the flow of money? By making demands and threatening to shut down the government or default on our debts? Are you now officially suicide squad as well?

Worked for the Dems.

-13 ( +0 / -13 )

I, for one, encourage the Repubs to continue showing these fine levels of leadership that the people want, for the next two years. Go Republicans!

7 ( +7 / -0 )

It's ironic that The Red Tsunami has led to a democrat getting the most votes for house leader, three votes in one day.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

And it's entertaining to see all the angry GOP members trying to unify the party in the midst of a civil war. I enjoy seeing the GOP being just as frustrated by the GOP as the entire rest of the planet has been with the GOP. This civil war is pure and utter schadenfreude.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

I stopped taking this post seriously after I saw

Which is always the lefts (in the US) downfall. They don’t read the tea leaves.

And it's entertaining to see all the angry GOP members trying to unify the party in the midst of a civil war. I enjoy seeing the GOP being just as frustrated by the GOP as the entire rest of the planet has been with the GOP. This civil war is pure and utter schadenfreude.

A bit creepy. Not a fan of Dems or their failed policies, but wallowing in their infighting? It’s just par to the cause, it happens maybe they can learn from it, but loving it….hmmm

-14 ( +0 / -14 )

Readers, this story will be closed for discussion for about two hours.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The problem is the Republicans are less focused on what really matters and are obsessed with stupid stuff like saving babies and destructive stuff like allowing the carry of military grade weaponry. And I don't understand why Musk is a Fox news hero especially with stock price really down now (glad I didn't take that advice a few days and invest on that day trade). And they hate Bill Gates and why is that?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

“Epic fail”….”utter humiliation”….”absolute disaster”…just some of the phrases describing today….

Think about this - the Repubs won the House and bragged about “Kevin getting the gavel”.  But the reality is, with a Repub House, DEM Hakeem Jeffries got 212 votes and McCarthy only got 203!  Isn’t that hilarious?  A Dem is closer to being Speaker than a Repub - in a Repub majority House!  And the fault lies entirely with the Repubs themselves…

Then the Ultra MAGA King, who publicly endorsed “His Kevin” in Nov, decides to re-think that today after this losing debacle - howz that for loyalty?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/we-ll-see-what-happens-trump-declines-to-commit-to-backing-mccarthy/ar-AA15WzBx?cvid=bb367aa107d34535915cdfd612ce489d

Today we have all our far-right Repubs forcefully backing McCarthy, this is after they flipped from a year ago when they were calling him a “Spineless RINO”...

We’ll see what they say tomorrow when their Messiah flips and changes his mind - and they all do a 180…

Nothing but a clown show…

4 ( +5 / -1 )

What happened to the done deal claimed here by the republican supporters? Another failure on the home run. The GOP is not as united as some say. I guess it will happen soon. Pelosi enjoying her popcorn.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Three strikes and you are out!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Pure comedy right now.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Here is to hoping that the Republicans resolve this quickly so that Congress can get down to the People's business in this new year.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Burnin' down the House.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

HAHAHAHAhahaha! Another massive loss for Republicans, and Kevin McCarthy's biggest in his life -- and he bet all the chips on this one. He spent all his integrity (what little he had), lost all respect (what he little he had), and used up all his political capital, including moving to the ultra-right fringes. He's done, and we're all the better for it.

And the BEST news is that already a good number of Republicans have said they don't want a long, drawn out contest saddling them down and will move to vote for a Speaker the Democrats approve of.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

bass: " It’s just par to the cause"

Do you mean "par for the course"? We know you're panicking, and we all expect the nervous LOLs and extremely upset ROFLs, but a bit jittery perhaps over yet ANOTHER loss?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

So the Republicans won the House, but don’t actually seem to want to be in control of it now.

Interesting.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Poor tiny little Kevin. Heh, the look on his face.

Maybe they should get Kanye for the job.

The Republican party is insane.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Not the GOP poster boy.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

A great day for common sense, democracy and above all comedy.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

”But just you wait until….err…erm…”

lol

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Everything will work out in the end for the Republicans.

I feel bad for Democrats though.

This vote just rubs salt in their wounds.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

I feel bad for Democrats though.

This vote just rubs salt in their wounds.

The laughs keep coming. Please don’t stop.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

I like (d) the respectful debate of less government and I would sometimes vote on that. Now the Republicans are all about..... babies, MTG, Trump, guns, more Trump, and more Trump, Hershel, Oz

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Right now you have Repub Rep Mike Waltz on Fox saying the 20 MAGA Repubs voting against McCarthy are creating a "hostage situation"....

On Day #1 the Repubs are at war with each other - calling each other names, saying they're committing crimes, questioning their patriotism....

It's the best reality comedy show on the air...

ROFL....

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Do you mean "par for the course"? We know you're panicking,

No reason to, not that kind of a guy.

and we all expect the nervous LOLs

Not nervous, just funny, as in “hilarious!”

and extremely upset ROFLs, but a bit jittery perhaps over yet ANOTHER loss?

Loss? My God, what are you talking about?

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

HAHAHAHAhahaha! Another massive loss for Republicans, and Kevin McCarthy's biggest in his life --

A Setback is not a loss

He's done, and we're all the better for it.

He’s not done and even if he were, either Jim Jordan, or Andy Biggs would be even worse for the Democrats.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

Republicans holding out for a piece of the committee cake. Voting buying behind the scenes.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

So republicans are worse and worse. Got it!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Things for the Repubs are going from disastrous to worse....

Now you have Gaetz and Gosar cozying up to AOC, trying to get her help in ensuring that the Dems don't leave the chamber giving McCarthy a chance of getting the votes...

So what do you think of that Trump supporters? Gaetz and Gosar in cahoots with AOC?

And what about McCarthy - ready to seek Dem votes so he can become Speaker, because 20 Repubs refuse to support him?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/aoc-says-she-was-telling-matt-gaetz-the-democratic-party-would-absolutely-not-rescue-kevin-mccarthy-s-speakership-bid-when-they-were-spotted-chatting-on-the-house-floor/ar-AA15Wxz7?cvid=a9c3d7a805264c4889d0885ac25f6dd8

Tell us what you think about that....

ROFL....

5 ( +5 / -0 )

On perhaps a sinister note, doesn't this worry some people that its a few of the 'extreme' right wing literally holding up the day to day running of Washington now? Are we watching an episode of 'The Handmaids Tale'?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

So republicans are worse and worse. Got it!

I wouldn’t call a setback worse, a bump for sure.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Bass: A Setback is not a loss

Who do you think will be the next speaker?

either Jim Jordan, or Andy Biggs would be even worse for the Democrats.

Snowballs in hell have a better chance of surviving than either of those men in a vote for speaker. They're too unpopular within their own party to get anywhere near a majority.
