“We’ve come through the past two years of COVID in better shape than nearly anywhere in the world,"

Yes sure...with a population from the whole country which is equal to a third from just one city in Japan.

"Better shape" for who? For the New Zealanders who were deprived of basic freedoms like going to a gym or a restaurant for the better part of two years?

Places that open up because they don't have infection problems or haven't had are just plain dumb.

If their plan is to eliminate the virus, this is a fail. It is pretty easy to close off a small island nation with a largely rural population and no land borders. It is a small, controlled population. But once you open travel, the virus will get there. The only thing to do is live with it and promote public health, including antiviral treatments.

A good example for why this will never get better or end. While the viruses develop further and perfect themselves the humans do the exactly opposite and forget everything themselves, like in this case, keeping to open up everything while there aren’t still enough information about the new mutant, but having been on a quite good way before with lockdowns when the viruses were still not such sophisticated and there were already plenty of information. Unbelievable grade of contradicting behavior and measure taking, isn’t it?

"Deprived of basic freedoms for the better part of two years"? More imaginary nonsense.

For the great majority of the past 2 years, NZ was free and open. Full stadiums, pubs, gyms, shops and restaurants, while other nations had all number of restrictions.

NZ has done a brilliant job.

That's expected

the people who brought the omicron variant to all the new countries needed to be fully vaccinated too.

Last week, the government announced the nation will reopen its borders to the world over the coming months, allowing for the return of displaced residents from January and tourists from April.

.

At lest New Zealanders abroad will be able to get home faster.

.

But why would anyone go on a foreign holiday while covid is still such a threat ?

.

The sooner we get vaccines to all and reduce the possibility of new variants the better.

The rich countries should help the poorer ones get the vaccine and deliver it to the people.

If they do not help, then more variants will surface and threaten them as well.
