Gender is a social construct, sex is not. If you don't want to adhere to gender norms, don't. Just don't ask the rest of us to deceive ourselves for your comfort,

Liberals and “your truth”. Uh no, there is THE truth.

Totally agree. Too often you see people, including the writer of this article and the New York City mayor, use sex and gender interchangeably, they are two different things. No one is assigned a gender at birth, their sex is noted. You can change your gender, not your sex.

This is so, so very stupid. I weep for NY.

This is so wrong.

When a person is born, their Sex is either Male or Female according to their genitalia - there is no choice over that.

Birth Certificates should remain untouched, as a form of identification, and not retrospectively changed. But by adding this "Gender: Dont know" option to the form, what sort of message does that give to the Child whilst growing up - identity crisis ? It may seem like a Trendy thing to do nowadays, but it's wrong to do for someone who has no say in the matter. The question should be changed to use the factual "Sex: M/F" rather than "Gender: M/F/?"

Why do we need the sex on docs though ? If it's for identification purpose, fingerprints or DNA would be better..

Because in some countries, such as the UK, there are many legal protections based on sex. Refuges from domestic violence, rape crisis services etc and laws safeguarding children and vulnerable adults are a few examples.

Why do those should be sex based ?

You can't understand why vulnerable women and children victims of male violence need women only spaces? Women having intimate care prefering a woman helping them? People whose religions mean they can't be undressed in front of the opposite sex wanting to see someone of the same sex. I could go on. Personally, I do not want to share a changing room with men but, surprisingly, areas like changing rooms are not protected by law in the UK.

NYers are celebrating

I guess all of this discussion stems from the Irish joke, about the Parent who replied "Yes Please" to the Sex question on the Birth Certificate form ...

Ah but seriously, this is a FUBAR situation (for those who know what that means).

Why should a newborn be left in their future questioning why their parents couldn't see at the time, their Birth Sexual identity. It's plain and simple. If, on the other hand, you're going to say it's up the the new born to decide their own identity, then be strong and say so from the start - making any form of M/F association invalid until the age of consent....

This ruling, is totally wrong. I stand by that, that's my thought, you can say what you say, but I stick to my thoughts and what I believe until proven wrong. I don't wish to change your own thoughts, but am simply stating my own thoughts, assuming the Japan Today Admins/Kenpeitai allow me to do so... which they repeatedly have chosen not to do so.

New York, New York it must be joking. The Aliens are invading New York and new gender identity was borne. The new gender "X" can use either of Gents or Lady toilet if the New York does not have toilet for "X" people.

Legal documents should be free from this nonsense. You want people to call you a toaster, fine. But underneath, biology still is in charge.

You're not the only one.

Exactly.

Say one of these 'X's' is in an accident. EMT's can't tell the gender by sight. Quick, check his ID! It says...uh...what the heck is an X?! OK guess the pants are coming off next...

There's got to be a line drawn somewhere.

Gender type is different from sex type

Sex type is your chromosomes; gender is what you identify as

This law is for people (for example, transgender) who wants to change their birth certificate gender to gender-neutral "X"

(Note: there's already a 2014 law that allows transgender people in NYC to change the gender on their birth certificates from male to female or vice versa - this new law simply adds a 3rd option; they can already do the first 2 options)

The problem is, birth certificates don't note sex but gender. Someone who is transgender is allowed to change the sex on their birth certificate. That is nonsense.

There has to be an actual record of biological gender somewhere. Birth certificates need to be untouchable.
