Just like Japan, the US had the chance to do prepare prior to this getting out of hand.

I just hope it ends quickly!

The governor of NY needs a million extra health workers?

Staggering numbers coming out of the US now and it's barely been a month since things have exploded.

And the virus is now getting started in Detroit, New Orleans, Chicago etc, etc....

God help our friends in the US.

Will the US survive this ?

3 ( +11 / -8 )

Just like Japan, the U.S., and the rest of the world, should not have been subjected to this potentially lethal virus.

-5 ( +10 / -15 )

don't worry about U.S, they started late, but is testing as many as possible, lock down in place, and is sending needed medical equipment to New York and rest of the states.

unlike Japan which has the capability but not doing anything now, i would be more worried about Japan than U.S

not testing is not a plan, it's form of stupidity

7 ( +15 / -8 )

Just like Japan, the U.S., and the rest of the world, should not have been subjected to this potentially lethal virus.

Okay. How do you think that would have been possible? Beyond China having health regulations, this was going to happen.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Unlike Japan once the US started to take it seriously new social guidelines were introduced and seriously followed to the highest level.

-20 ( +4 / -24 )

Not once the US started to take it seriously, once Donny started to take it somewhat seriously. Don’t blame the entire country for Donny downplaying the seriousness of this issue and contradicting the medical experts. That’s extremely disingenuous and silly a way for you to avoid criticizing the person most responsible: Donny.

Then again, untilDonny started taking this slightly seriously, you were telling us to ignore him. Apparently I’m your world, it’s completely acceptable to have a president that you have to ignore in a crisis.

5 ( +14 / -9 )

Unlike Japan once the US started to take it seriously new social guidelines were introduced and seriously followed to the highest level.

Right.

That's why many people in Philadelphia were ignoring stay at home orders last Friday and crowding places like Kelly Drive and Eakins Oval Plaza. That's why many New Yorkers were ignoring stay at home orders and gathering in parks. That's why Florida beaches continue to get packed, and a Tampa minister had an arrest warrant issued for having church services for hundreds of people. That's why Californians such as surfers have been fined heavily for ignoring stay at home orders. And so on and so forth.

What was that about white washing the historical record and engaging in revisionism?

16 ( +18 / -2 )

Check this website for the predicted number of deaths for New York. For Florida, where I was from, 488,000 because they are all old, out of shape and conservative, so they listen to Rush and Trump who seem determined to kill them off. https://covidactnow.org/

Kops has been waiting to be reinstated since mid-March

Cuomo begging for help when he should be cutting the red tape that is preventing the efficient use of the huge amount of latent resources right under his nose.

"Anyone who says this situation is a New York City-only situation is in a state of denial," Cuomo said.

True. But New York City is about half the problem for the entire nation of 330 million people. Go upstate and there are relatively few infections. Where is the Mayor of the city?

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

that was last week news, you have anything new, now people getting fined.

also unlike other countries, states have much flexibility during this type of emergency situation,

they don't need to wait for Feds for testing kits or medical equipment, many states are not waiting for Feds, they are acting first.

yes, governors already know, they can not wait for the president,

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Love reading fascist republicans disparaging New York as if I’m this is all New York’s fault and has nothing to do with Donny bungling the response for over two weeks.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Cuomo bungled it too. Should have closed down a before he did. Like CA did.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

That's got to be due to the lack of leadership and the mixed messages coming from very the top of the leadership pyramid- the Presidency.

Get off of that blame crap already; its getting tired. Everybody in every country from day one misjudged this thing. Whats important now is the people who are innovating and retooling to hit this hard. Factories are stepping up and all kinds of ideas being put out there. Blame is useless now.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

BigYen: Spot on.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

@Yubaru stop your "but but Japan" self assurance, Japanese aren't dying in mass number now. Its time to ask for help. China is pumping them out aplenty and sending to Europe

4 ( +6 / -2 )

What seems different about the US response is how uncoordinated it looks across the various states and major cities. That's got to be due to the lack of leadership and the mixed messages coming from very the top of the leadership pyramid

The USA was designed that way, with states having power. Plenty of greedy politicians and others are only too happy to use this situation to further concentrate power in the hands of a few. They are taking advantage of a fearful public that will eagerly surrender essential human rights for promises of safety - as seen in the comments here. Good luck getting them back.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

That's got to be due to the lack of leadership and the mixed messages coming from very the top of the leadership pyramid- the Presidency.

Silly.

Are you from the States? Cities have mayors, counties have elected leaders, states have governors, and many more competent leaders from both sides, Reps and Dems. Trump, is not, and should not, overstep the local governments. Only some closet authoritarian would desire this.

Not once the US started to take it seriously, once Donny started to take it somewhat seriously. Don’t blame the entire country for Donny downplaying the seriousness of this issue and contradicting the medical experts.

No, I blame the China for not being transparent and for not allowing US scientists to go there, to get more specific answers on combating this virus, information on patient zero and that never materialized. Trump didn’t take it seriously in the beginning and not only him, but DeBlasio and Dr. Oxiris Barbot downplayed the seriousness of this virus. A lot of people dropped the ball on this virus, but it was ultimately China that got the ball rolling on this and the very they could have done for the entire world is work with the US and other international scientists to have been more transparent.

Yes, “the China” is responsible for not having shared information immediately. That, however, has nothing to do with Donny constantly minimizing the issue and contradicting the experts.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

It has absolutely nothing to do with DeBlasio and Dr. Bardot NOT taking this virus seriously, Dr. Bardot even more so, she’s a licensed and trained medical practitioner and she completely wrote this thing off. She is the health commissioner, she should have known better and as a health commissioner she deserves a lot of blame for this.

New York, “ the greatest city in the world “, begging for help ... ...

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

nah deblasio is totally blameless:

In his defiant March 2 tweet, de Blasio wrote: “Since I’m encouraging New Yorkers to go on with your lives + get out on the town despite Coronavirus, I thought I would offer some suggestions. Here’s the first: thru Thurs 3/5 go see “The Traitor” @FilmLinc. If “The Wire” was a true story + set in Italy, it would be this film.”

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

State and local governments do not have the same resources the federal government does.

Yes, and to put it simply for you, the federal government only has those resources because they take them from the states.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Thanks China!

Yet, on a different thread, you claimed Cuomo was lying to create panic. Which is it? Cuomo couldn’t simultaneously downplay the seriousness whilst whipping up panic.

Dinny’s Fans’ inability to use logic is shocking.

So she deserves blame for writing this off, but Trump, the leader of the country, doesn't deserve blame for writing this off (as a democratic hoax at that)?

I always said, the President didn’t handle this well got hammered for it, deservingly so and although he’s the leader of this nation, he made up for it and is taking it seriously now, but Dr. Bardot a medically physician, a trained and licensed practitioner should have known better because she’s in the medical field and should be held responsible or at the very least step down for her negligence.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

More evidence of the utter and complete disaster the federal government's response under Trump has been.

This makes Bush and Katrina look like a master-class in quick and efficient response.

He takes the podium every day because he's so insecure he can't let Pence do the briefings and look 100 times more Presidential than him. So we get the daily rantings of a demented buffoon - who's staff has to then do a "cleanup in aisle 4"....

Trump will be remembered for two things during this debacle;

"I'm not responsible"...

And Americans will remember them in Nov...

Erm, yes. Same as every country.

I always said, the President didn’t handle this well got hammered for it, deservingly so and although he’s the leader of this nation, he made up for it and is taking it seriously now,

He handled it badly. A pity he isn’t as competent as some leaders around the world who were on the ball early.

He’s taking it seriously now...Sounds like a child whose parents gave him a spanking.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

He handled it badly. A pity he isn’t as competent as some leaders around the world who were on the ball early.

Not as bad as someone who’s a trained medical expert who should have corrected Trump from the beginning and she didn’t do that, she encouraged the outing and blew the seriousness off.

He’s taking it seriously now...Sounds like a child whose parents gave him a spanking.

Which is what Dr. Barton and DeBlasio needed.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Not as bad as someone who’s a trained medical expert who should have corrected Trump from the beginning and she didn’t do that

He’s a stable genius capable of playing 475D chess.

I’m not at that level but I would have consulted leading experts and gleaned a majority view. I get the sense Trump liked what he heard and ran with it. A sign of poor leadership.

As one commentator noted, Trump is like a couch which bears the impression of the last person who sat on it.

A low information leader.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Dr. Bardot a medically physician, a trained and licensed practitioner should have known better because she’s in the medical field and should be held responsible or at the very least step down for her negligence.

But Trump, the leader of the nation, and in the leadership field, should not be held responsible nor should he step down for his negligence?

Remember, it's not like he didn't have experts telling him what was going on. The earliest publicly-known meetings were at the end of January, he called it a democratic hoax weeks later. Pretty negligent. And you just said those who are negligent should step down.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

I’m not at that level but I would have consulted leading experts and gleaned a majority view. I get the sense Trump liked what he heard and ran with it. A sign of poor leadership.

I got the sense that he thought it wasn’t something serious considering the source of origin.

As one commentator noted, Trump is like a couch which bears the impression of the last person who sat on it.

A low information leader.

As so many of them were in handling this thing initially.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

Great.

They all were, with the exception of China, they know everything....supposedly.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

I pray that good Americans will win the virus and will not die, especially poor homeless people.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Whenever I think about NY, the Teamsters Union and their crazy high costs come to mind. If I were to work in NY, I'd insist on a 30% hazard duty pay above whatever the "top people" already there are paid.

As pointed out above, the US Federal Govt has almost nothing to do with healthcare in the USA. Each state has the top responsibility according to US laws. There is no "health care" in the US Constitution regardless of what you've heard or want to believe. All powers not specifically given to the federal govt in the Constitution are the responsibility of each state. PERiOD. The Constitution actually says,

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.["

Which still means that if a state doesn't have health care for it's citizens, then that power is up to the people. That would apply to NY state just like it does to Alabama or Oregon or Ohio.

If New York is an example of what's to come the current idiot in Chief will start to blame the governors, former presidents, local officials, other countries, and the general population. He won't take any responsibility. Then he will continue to lower the bar for success!

Trump now says if 100,000 Americans die from coronavirus he will have done 'a very good job'

https://news.yahoo.com/trump-coronavirus-100000-200000-deaths-very-good-job-153353997.html

Guess what! His TV ratings for emergency updates are up so people must really like him (sarcasm)! If reporters continue to ask him "mean" questions then he will just cancel the new conferences all together.

Then when someone like Cuomo starts getting more famous and popular, he will attack them on Twitter and start the news conferences again!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

nah deblasio is totally blameless:

That is rich coming from you, every post you've made since this crisis began has been telling us this is just a cold and the government shouldn't do anything.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If New York is an example of what's to come the current idiot in Chief will start to blame the governors, former presidents, local officials, other countries, and the general population. He won't take any responsibility. Then he will continue to lower the bar for success!

No, CNN will do that.

Ever since, Trump has been moving the goalposts on the pandemic, and on Sunday, with coronavirus cases and deaths mounting, Trump said that keeping the U.S. death toll between 100,000 and 200,000 would be “a very good job.”

“If we could hold that down, as we’re saying, to 100,000, that’s a horrible number, maybe even less, but to 100,000 — so we have between 100- and 200,000 — we altogether have done a very good job,” Trump said during a task force press briefing in the White House Rose Garden.

At the rate it’s spreading and by what he medical experts have been predicting this pandemic could exceed the current estimation of deaths and if that is so, if the administration along with their guidelines to the public and can keep the people following them, there could be less chances of it spreading so rapidly, we might be able to slow the spread down. So in that case with the estimate death toll, of he can keep it to that number it would be a good thing, but remember, we are talking about a hypostasis.

There was a gov in NH who is a trained engineer, thinking like a leader and outside the blame box, is sourcing local companies to use 3D print technology for respirator mfg. Many around the world are doing this to include Spain. Those who put all their eggs in the Fed basket seem to be failing the worse, due to their lack of foresight and planning. When stuff hits the fan, back to the usual...blame Trump.

He has thrown trillions at it, companies are doing trial vaccine runs now, testing is available in the thousands, 2 hospital ships mobilized. What else do you want from him?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

"There is no reason for undue anxiety—the general risk remains low in NY. We are diligently managing this situation &will provide info as it becomes available."

- New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, March 2 (on Twitter)

"New Yorkers remain at low risk for contracting #COVID19. As we confront this emerging outbreak, we need to separate facts from fear, and guard against stigma and panic."

- ****New York City Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot, March 2 (on Twitter)

“Since I’m encouraging New Yorkers to go on with your lives + get out on the town despite Coronavirus, I thought I would offer some suggestions. Here’s the first: thru Thurs 3/5 go see “The Traitor” @FilmLinc. If “The Wire” was a true story + set in Italy, it would be this film.”

- New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, March 2 (on Twitter)

“Life is going on pretty normally right now, and we want to encourage that ... If you’re under 50 & you’re healthy, which is most New Yorkers, there’s very little threat here. This disease, even if you were to get it, basically acts like a common cold or flu. And transmission is not that easy."

- De Blasio, March 10 (TV interview)

"We know that there’s currently no indication that it’s easy to transmit by casual contact ... We want New Yorkers to go about their daily lives, ride the subway, take the bus, go see your neighbors."

- Barbot, March 2 (press briefing)

"We’re telling New Yorkers, go about your lives, take the subway, go out, enjoy life. If it (the coronavirus) were likely to be transmitted casually, we'd be seeing a lot more cases."

- Barbot, Feb. 7 (TV interview)

"The risk to New Yorkers for coronavirus is low, and that our preparedness as a city is very high. There is no reason not to take the subway, not to take the bus, not to go out to your favorite restaurant, and certainly not to miss the (Chinese New Year) parade next Sunday."

- Barbot, Feb. 2 (speech in Chinatown ahead of Chinese New Year Parade)

“There's no need to panic and to avoid activities that we always do as New Yorkers. We are hardy people. As an Asian-American, I’ve been disturbed if not outright appalled by some of the comments or gestures that I have seen."

- New York State Senator John Liu, Feb. 2 (speech at same locale)

------------------------------------------

So, please tell me more about the situation in New York is all Trump's fault.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

All of the above quotes from New York officials, by the way, came well after Trump issued the China travel ban.

So, please, let's immediately cease and desist with all this talk about how Trump didn't do anything, how he didn't take it seriously, and how what's happening in New York is all his fault.

By the way, I could easily post similar quotes from city officials in New Orleans, and from Nancy Pelosi herself with regard to the outbreak in California.

So ... stop. Blaming. Trump.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

I always said, the President didn’t handle this well got hammered for it, deservingly so

This isn't true. You and the other far-right posters here made excuse after excuse for him and said he was doing a great job, when you weren't deflecting to things that were irrelevant. Trump told people to ingest poison and you all started talking about ratings, instead of whether or not the President telling Americans to ingest poison was good or bad. The thing is, you know that Trump telling people to poison themselves is bad. But if you said that, it would mean your master did something wrong. And you can't have that. So instead you talk about how much better his TV show is than the Bachelor.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What else do you want from him?

At a minimum to be honest and not make this all about himself. But leopards and spots; in his 75 years on the planet he's shown he's genomically incapable of being honest and not making everything all about him.

Trump is not "peddling" anything. Had he not taken the action he did early on, specifically with regard to the China travel ban, the situation would be much worse.

And that travel ban was one that people in your ideological camp were blasting as "racist" and "xenophobic" and all that.

Which makes me all the more grateful that people in your ideological camp are not in charge of this thing.

It's almost as if people in your ideological camp (at least some of them) actually WANT Trump's efforts to fail. They seethe at and loathe Trump so much, they would rather see him fail -- even if it means the virus killing hundreds of thousands of people.

These people hate Trump so much more than they care about America or its people. And it's been that way ever since he was elected.

only the president can declare a national emergency and get companies to manufacture the ,medical supplies that are needed, NY has been screaming for 30000 ventilators yet they've only received 4000, so who decides who lives and who dies, if he had done this 4 weeks ago the US probably would be in the shite their in now.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Trump is not "peddling" anything. Had he not taken the action he did early on, specifically with regard to the China travel ban, the situation would be much worse.

the virus wasn't just from Chinese it was also from Americans infected abroad and returning home, Trump didnt make mandatory quarantine for these AMericans at an early date, there were plenty of other countries that had the virus yet flights were not banned for them.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Will the US survive this in its current state?

I’d say pretty much, yes. Like other countries.

Many economies are going to take big hits and people will lose loved ones. Hopefully, we will be better prepared for pandemics and we’ll see the terrible situation of people living hand to mouth for what it is and make needed changes.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Things are not too bad where I am at in the states. There is a stay at home order. The restaurants and other places are closed. The supermarket shelves look like the old Soviet Union. Bare shelves and refrigeration units are now a common sight. Make your own hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol is unavailable so I use ever clear. The local clinics are all doing remote visits. Safe? I doubt it as it is just a matter of time before the peak hits this location. If I was not stuck would come home to Japan quickly.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

"No, I blame the China for not being transparent and for not allowing US scientists to go there, to get more specific answers on combating this virus, information on patient zero and that never materialized."

While I agree with this, the US still had 50-day head start, and did little to prepare for it.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Most countries made mistakes and then they point the finger at each other. Pride and Prejudice is epidemic in the whole world. not only the politic but also the civil isn't innocent.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Those who blame China for this know they are themselves -- or the people whom they support -- to blame. China lied, and tried to cover up the numbers, and it spread. This is the argument people use when... wait for it... their government has lied, tried to cover up the numbers, and it's spreading. This isn't a "China" problem, nor is it a Chinese virus, it is a problem we ALL have, as human beings, and something we must all face and work together on.

That said, if there are people you want to blame if you honestly feel you are perfect, blame your government for YOUR situation. You can't blame China for how Trump responded (or didn't, in this case). Likewise, as Japan seems intent on following the same path as the US and Italy, and even China at the beginning. So, take care of yourselves as much as you can, peeps, and learn what you can about places in your area, if any, where you can get help if needed. Stay home when you can.

This is the argument people use when... wait for it... their government has lied, tried to cover up the numbers, and it's spreading. This isn't a "China" problem, nor is it a Chinese virus, it is a problem we ALL have, as human beings, and something we must all face and work together on.

Leaders like to blame China for their own mistakes. You are right. Trump has been trying to pull this stunt.

Still, the world needs to hold the CCP to account for this and pressure them to get their house in order.

wtfjapan

the virus wasn't just from Chinese it was also from Americans infected abroad and returning home,

The virus was from China. And now the CCP wants to portrayed as the great benevolent helper, by sending aid abroad. They should have be honest about the thing in the first place, instead of suppressing information for 3 months. Remember, the infection was reported back in November, but heavily censored in China. The CCP even ordered the first research results and samples destroyed. Lets not forget that.

Trump's 'best case' scenario of US coronavirus deaths was what, something like 100K?

I highly doubt we'll reach even a fraction of that.

Overhyped.

President Donald Trump told a White House briefing that more than 1 million Americans had been tested for coronavirus - less than 3% of the population.

uh, somehow, i think there is a problem with these numbers... or the USA has a lot less people living there than i thought.

The restaurants and other places are closed.

unless they can do take out or delivery, which most can and do

The ideal of cooperation, though, is the same and if a crisis like this one can't trigger it

. Supermarkets are open, and the elderly only are always slated for 4 pm to 6 pm near my folks anyway. How’s that for non federal local and corporate leadership?

The lead has to come from the top, it has to unify, and it has to stay on-message.

no it doesn’t l. I strongly disagree wIt’s you on that. One should never depend on central government anyway.

The Federal Government is doing all it can to help New York, after New York Mayor himself pretended there was nothing wrong ... the Governor of New York is going a great job and asking for help is part of his job. Articles don't need to ephasize "pleading" as if he is not heard. He talks to the President and the Federal officials every day. No need to try to make it look divisive. It is time for all to work together and not focus on negative.
