"The crime drips with brutal irony: a woman decapitated, allegedly by her estranged husband, in the offices of the television network the couple founded with the hope of countering Muslim stereotypes."

There really isn't much more to say, is there?

“I don’t know if the method of death does mean anything,” said the chief,

A man with enough wisdom to utter the words "I don't know..." I like this guy already.

Anyway, post implying that Americans of other religions have never killed their wives for threatening divorce in 5,4,3,.....

I really think they need to link Honor killings to the Hate crime statute. Give it some real teeth! Automatic upgrade if its an honor killing. What an ironic name for murder. The only honor, is that which is lost when you murder someone you should care about and protect.

And I think the hate crime statute needs to be erased. Punishing the motive is bizarre to say the least.

Its like saying "Well, if you kill your wife because she burned your favorite shirt with an iron, that is a lot better than if you killed her because she brought you dishonor."

Killing is just wrong (outside of direct self defense). No excuse is any better than another.

I'm with you on this one. murder is murder. how do you upgrade murder in the first degree?

Acquaintances said Mo Hassan was not overtly religious—co-workers did not see him pray, for instance. But he seemed to adhere to many traditional practices.

One too many, apparently.

Oh, please! It's not like making rice cakes on New Year's or something! or like this guy does it regularly. Sounds like the acquaintances have decided what they believe to be 'traditional' on another culture. It's a murder, and a pretty random act based on the uproar, and no more traditional than people in Saitama offing each other with ticker tape flowing about.

Maybe, just maybe, I'd buy the domestic abuse bit if her head was still attached to the rest of her body... Second degree murder is too good for this nutjob.

Screw this Honor Killing crap. We don't recognize it here in the US. It's murder. Live here and respect our laws not those of the old country. Freedom of religion doesn't extend to killing people.

Exactly my point. Is why I think it should be classified as a hate crime.

That said, I'm not a fan of the hate crime statute myself, but this is the wrong forum to discuss it, or the reasons why its a bad idea.

I agree Ossan. No matter how badly your ego is hurt you have no right to kill because of it in MOST countries around the word. If you want to live by the old ways go the heck back to where your ideas are in line with the laws. Not in our countries.

"post implying that Americans of other religions have never killed their wives for threatening divorce in 5,4,3,....."

Nope. There are plenty of murders that started as domestic violence all over the world. In fact the 1986 murder in Orchard Park was a friend of my sister-in-laws. It was domestic violence that spun out of control. There are even cases where victims have been chopped up to hide the evidence. But decapitating somebody is a bit extreme.

Any culture that accepts killing of women for any reason is just plain backwards.

You guys seem to be forgetting that the man went to the police and turned him self in; that seems to indicate that he knew he committed a crime, no? I'm not defending the putz... in fact I agree that second-degree murder is too good for this guy, but all the sentiment that the guy thought what he was doing was okay and is above the law is bogus.

Because Smith is so muslim sensitive he can't hold the man 100% accountable for his actions. I guess that knowing that your killing is wrong and turning yourself in afterwards is better than never killing at all.

Naturally, murder and domestice violence occurs all over the world.

However, DV is a particular problem in the Muslim community because the Koran specifically states that beating one's wife is permitted. (Verse 4:34 - go and check it.) Killing a fellow Muslim is forbidden however.

And even the most Islam-accommodating apologist will have noticed the Islamic predeliction for beheading. That's because in the Islamic world, emulating Mohummad is considered a holy act, and Mohummad personally beheaded hundreds of prisoners.

I suppose this is what you call an epic fail.
