Form over substance.  2050?  If this this really such an emergency surely faster and more serious action needs to be taken?

Form over substance indeed. She is waving flags, that’s the point apparently. Signaling her virtue to her many adoring fans. She’s taking her brand global too. Watch this (empty?) space.

Good on JA. One of the few leaders out there who can get things done and not prone to reactionary forces that blight politics.

If a climate emergency is passed, New Zealand would join countries like Canada, France and Britain that have taken the same course to focus efforts on tackling climate change.

Pure virtue signaling. You may as well have a similar statement on poverty, inequality, racism etc etc etc. Unless it is backed up with action or some kind of plan, this is just a waste of time for 120 highly paid politicians when they could be doing something about it.

What has declaring a "Climate Emergency" ever done for climate change in any of the other countries that declared one?

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's government is to declare a climate emergency in a symbolic step to increase pressure for action to combat global warming.

Let's get the pandemic out of the way before we worry about other things... just my opinion of course

COVID-19 has done more to deal with climate change than this hollow declaration, which, amusingly, comes even in the footsteps of Suga's derided move recently.

With COVID-19 leading to record economic contractions around the world, one wonders what exactly is proposed to be done by all the hand-wringers? Where is the nob to turn off climate change?

what a non factor

So will this give her some emergency powers? She said "take immediate action on" [climate change in the region] but the first paragraph said it is simply a symbolic step. What immediate actions will she take?

When a hurricane is imminent, you call an hurricane emergency. When an irreversible catastrophic disaster due to climate change is imminent, you call an emergency.

Why? Because your brain can't think of two things at once? If a massive hurricane hit during the pandemic, would you say, let's just get the pandemic sorted out first and then deal with the hurricane?

Thats the difference. This declaration is purely symbolic. It confers no extra powers to do anything. It does not give guidance or direct anyone to do anything. It does not make anyone more prepared than they already are.

Declaring a hurricane emergency etc spurs local civil defense organisations to alert staff and mobilize resources, start evacuations of low lying areas etc. There is action involved.

Exactly. Same with a climate emergency. It's a call to action.
