Wish in Japan "they" were able to do the same, crackdowns, hefty fines and so on.

Why on Earth would you wish for a more authoritarian government? People are not dying in the streets here...

Countries with leaders that have functioning brains. Contrast that with Japan, whose leaders say, "It's too soon to START a lockdown despite the exponential increase of infections and deaths, and if we do it will be voluntary, and we still want you to go to work on packed trains, please!"

AgentX: "Less than 1% of Corona positive patients succumb to the virus and the world's economy gets shut down?"

Yeah, who cares about those losers, right? I mean, forgetting it'd be a lot higher if nations actually tested and reported deaths properly, and did not resort to lockdowns to begin with.

"I'll let you know when it's crunch time."

...

"It isn't crunch time yet."

Captain Kathryn Janeway - Star Trek: Voyager

I mean, really. Since when is five deaths considered a crisis?

Let the negative votes roll...But you know I'm right.

In nation wide emergency situations the government should take the lead. And if that results in draconian measures, that's what needs to be done. Australians and NZs trust their governments to get things back to normal as quickly as possible. So accept the measures. Don't think certainly don't think I'd trust the LDP to do the same.

542,077

Cases which had an outcome:

427,806 (79%)

Recovered / Discharged

114,271 (21%)

Deaths

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/?

Only %20 off the actual figures.

The point is this all started because one single person became infected and spread the virus to its current numbers around the globe. By taking actions before huge numbers of infections and deaths, Australia and New Zealand have had a lot less cases and deaths than others that have taken no action or who were slow to react. Some may consider those actions unnecessary but they have saved many lives. America, Italy, Spain are the alternatives.

Happy to live in Australia under lock down and low case numbers rather than the alternative.

Good work Australia and New Zealand.

However, stay the course, as the COVID19 virus is presenting itself again in cleared patients in SK and Singapore. Be resolute.

I am truly sorry for those who lost their dearest due to this pandemic.

Great job Australia and New Zealand. Can't say the same for us here in Japan. People just don't listen, want to listen or simply ignore warnings.

Looking at the stats, Australia has done well, despite it being a large country with a lot of travel between it and China. It has got the rate of new cases down to 0.33%. On the other hand, Japan has just overtaken Australia, and its rate of increase is much higher at 12%. With an 'authoritarian' government (as AgentX calls it), the Aussies will get back to everyday life soon. And us in Japan? It's only just beginning.

Unfortunately Australian government has not seen fit to give benefit payments to New Zealanders in the same way NZ government is doing for Australians. Policy of both governments seems to be that they will ease lock down restrictions when no new cases have been found for 2 weeks. Which is all but impossible seeing that people are still going to supermarkets, hospitals, schools, childcare and to essential jobs. So something of a stalemate right now and 20 or so new cases a day. Which could keep going for months.

Yes, the number of new cases in Australia is decreasing due to the strict distancing rules and the Australian economy has taken a huge hit because of it. However, this is what is needed to control the spread of this virus. Abe and his cronies are more concerned about keeping Japan Inc. afloat than stopping the spread of the virus. Australia will have beaten this virus within a few months and the economy will bounce back quickly. However, Japan could be battling this virus for years at the rate they are going. If Japan thinks it is bad now, wait until the virus really hits its stride, which it will with the passive and economically inspired approach they have now. Japan will be closed for years!

If only the world govts had of acted swiftly and isolated the source earlier, faster, swifter and much more decisively by simply isolating china when the virus first broke.

That is the real story, why did the govts continue to let travelers from the infected area continue to pour over their borders as tourists ?

The economic hit they are taking now would have to be far worse then simply stopping the tourists.

I hope they act far more proactively in future, lesson should be learned by now SURELY !

Looks like Australia and NZ are handling that COVID 19 outbreak quite well.

Yep.

But maybe "we" should also wait and see, the way it has been done in the States. I mean, maybe that darned virus will just vanish, go away, with lots of prayers?

You know darned well that is a gross mischaracterization of the true situation. Or maybe you honestly but mistakenly believe that. Millions have taken concrete action to stem the spread of the Wuhan virus.

And prayer doesn't hurt.

They were told to take concrete action and it’s not the Wuhan virus. Why would you spread false information?

And prayer doesn't hurt

They also don’t help.

There are many factors but the misinformation from WHO is one. Below extracts from an earlier news article.

The World Health Organisation is facing growing criticism for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic and its ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

From criticising travel bans and repeating China's claims in mid-January that the virus cannot be transmitted between humans, to blindly accepting the regime's likely fake statistics, the WHO and Dr Tedros have consistently toed the line of the Communist regime.

The WHO declined to classify the new coronavirus a pandemic until March 11, when there were already more than 120,000 confirmed cases throughout 114 countries and nearly 4400 deaths.

Despite clear evidence of Chinese authorities covering up the beginnings of the outbreak in Wuhan – detaining doctors and journalists who attempted to sound the alarm – Dr Tedros has lavished praise on Chinese President Xi Jinping, hailing the “transparency” of the country's “top leadership”.

“We appreciate the seriousness with which China is taking this outbreak,” he said in a statement on January 28.

In early February, Dr Tedros slammed countries including the US and Australia for inciting “fear and stigma” by denying entry to travellers from China, saying there was “no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade” and calling “on all countries to implement decisions that are evidence-based and consistent”.

I mean, really. Since when is five deaths considered a crisis?

Let the negative votes roll...But you know I'm right.

Tell that to the dead people.

Also, your logic is flawed. It was a crisis, but thankfully limited to just 5 fatalities (so far) due to the lock-down. A crisis averted is still a crisis.

Officials in New Zealand and Australia, hailed globally for their early signs of success in combating the spread of the coronavirus, said on Monday it is too soon to start easing social distancing rules or reopening their economies.

Good on ya, mates. This is how you successfully combat the SPREADING of the virus from Wuhan, China. I'm still hoping that some nation's medical scientists will finally create a workable vaccine that will end the need for all of these travel restrictions, and lockdowns.
