Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's ruling Labour Party and Government are appeasing a ruthless dictatorship.

Ardern answer is to turn her back and pretend it is isn't happening, to fall back on a policy of political hand wringing.

The Government of China has committed heinous crimes against humility.

At least one million Uighurs and people from other mostly Muslim minorities have been held in camps in Xinjiang, according to rights groups, who accuse authorities of forcibly sterilizing women and imposing forced labour.

Pusillanimity and acquiescence are a pitiful combination.

Shameful cowardice.

Humanity..sorry kicking the furniture.

Arden's attitude is so scheming, contrived, politically cynical.

Very disappointing by the PM.

Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide

https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/documents/atrocity-crimes/Doc.1_Convention%20on%20the%20Prevention%20and%20Punishment%20of%20the%20Crime%20of%20Genocide.pdf

Article II

*In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: *

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

"The Muslim nation would not sit quietly if the genocide of their people were being carried out. Tens of thousands protested the Muhammad cartoon and were willing to die for the honor of their religion. The reality is the US is more concerned about the Muslims than the Muslims are concerned."

That is because most of these outspoken leaders of Muslim nations are on the payroll of China. Many of these nations like Turkey , Pakistan, Malaysia which otherwise take up the cause of their brethren are benefiting from Chinese investment. Also helps that China itself turns a blind eye to human rights abuses in a few of these nations unlike the West.

Sid:

China's treatment of the Uighurs is vile, and should be condemned, but it's true that the term 'genocide' is used too casually. The Uighurs are not being rounded up and gassed or hacked to death in their millions.

No matter how repressed they are, unless they are being systematically killed like the Armenians, Jews, Bosnians or even Nankingers, saying genocide just cheapens that word.

9 ( +17 / -8 )

Absolutely gutless from Jacinda Ardern. Not surprised though as she is a Communist.

8 ( +18 / -10 )

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I do not think the leader of any G7 country has called these crimes genocide.

For example, Biden called them atrocities. Only his secretary of state used the word genocide.

However, Biden did use the word genocide for the Armenian massacres, the first US president to do so. Better late than never.

What a joke.

'Woke' politicians can be counted on to hear hijabs and the rest of it, but when the rubber meets the road, they're just as useless as their policies.

Where's New Zealand, by the way?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Aint she something else, people are waking up to her and her ways, bunch of people questioning her lately about her decisions and where she is taking NZ.

5 ( +16 / -11 )

Sid, really?

Let's take a closer look at that argument. With Beijing’s own words.

Yes, the Atrocities in Xinjiang Constitute a Genocide

A bunch being larger than a tiny minority I can assure you.

Since ALL the evidence shows a rapid INCREASE of the Uighur population in China

"Evidence" being figures published by the CCP?

4 ( +9 / -5 )

I don't know why people are so surprised. She is a secret communist pretending to be a democratic socialist! Her policies will hopefully unravel and the electorate will see through her in the future!

I gave up on New Zealand in the 1980s. They don't pull their weight in the Pacific. No air defenses of any kind, they are completely helpless to defend themselves. The Chinese could send the Shandong south to New Zealand and do as they wished and the Kiwis have no ability to defend themselves. They would go crying to Australia and the US for help. Were it my call I would probably say no. Look at the military power tiny little Singapore has and New Zealand has nothing. They don't even try. Then they grovel to the Chinese. What a rotten little country.

Yeah China is a good Sugar Dad, right Jackie baby?

The Chinese embassy in Wellington did not respond to a request for comment.

It's rather disappointing to be unable to see conceit Beijing's knee-jerk reactions after the genocide recognition at Wellington.

With help of chauvinist "Little Pink" 小粉紅, China's state-sponsored propaganda campaigns at SNS domains are more active than ever. Unfortunately, but no surprisingly, they've been mostly unsuccessful :P

There are ways other than gassing or hacking to death a people based on their ethnic background for the purpose of reducing and ultimately eliminating their existence. Speed doesn't define genocide.

"China forcing birth control on Uighurs to suppress population, report says"

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-53220713

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Hmm.. Who knows ..Maybe the genocide is real and the relevant Muslim nations are a bit racist and can't care less about Chinese looking Muslims.

They are from Turkestan and don’t look Chinese at all.

The accusation was Muslims were being slaughtered. After four years and no evidence but satellite pictures of warehouses it’s forced abortion and labor. What happened to those being slaughtered?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Forced abortions and forced long-term birth control ARE genocide.

It’s sad if there are forced abortions. My opinion is that it would be genocide if they targeted all Uighurs and most of the population of Uighurs were detained and forced to do so in these abortion camps. The Uighurs who are not in these camps are not required to do so.

Someone writes holocaust about the Uighurs in Xinjiang on the internet and we think that all Uighurs are captured and taken to concentration camps like the Jews but that’s not the case.

And what would be the motivation for the alleged genocide? So a bomb explodes and a knife attack happened in the past ten years and the authorities thought long and hard and the measure they came up with is genocide?

I’ve read there is no policy on the number of children minorities in China can have. The Uighurs are a minority and can have as many children as they want, unlike the Chinese who are allowed two.

NZ likely saw an Internet attack that saw all Belgium Parliament and government IT services down for hours yesterday, after its Belnet was hit by a huge distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Perhaps it WAS a considence that the timing of the attack coincided with a parliamentary committee meeting on whether or not to accuse China of genocide regarding its treatment of Uyghur Muslims (though there WAS other business on the agenda for that day that didn't involve China). The DDoS reportedly stopped a legislative committee just before they would have heard from a Uyghur woman who was expected to testify before Belgian politicians over what she experienced in China's camps.

No word yet about who initiated the DDoS attack.

China is so closed that it really is hard to get down to the real truth.

Keeping out journalists gives a clue however.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Very dissappointing on the part of the Ardern administration. Now that New Zealand has shown fear and deference to China, they will be run over. Cause that's how it works.

What media should we be reading?

THat is up to you. However, whatever you read, you should not swallow it uncritically. Which, alas, a lot of people seem to do.

Well it isn't genocide, good on you Jacinda Ardern. Talk to the rogue state of the USA if you want to talk genocide.

Wearning a burqa to show her compassion to the local community..and now this.. guess her hardcore supporters finally got the wake up call.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

OK, maybe it's not genocide but just some mass incarceration, rape, splitting up of families, beatings, torture, forced indoctrination of Han Chinese ways, and the eradication of their culture.

Glad we got that straight.

Alas - JT doesn't buy the articles for very long and doesn't post the comments from those stories.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/6/29/china-forcing-birth-control-on-uighurs-to-suppress-population-ap

Beijing accused of forced sterilisation, abortions, and pregnancy checks on hundreds of thousands of minority women.

...

The campaign over the past four years in the far west region of Xinjiang is leading to what some experts are calling a form of “demographic genocide”.

....

The population-control measures are backed by mass detention both as a threat and as punishment for failure to comply. Having too many children is a major reason people are sent to detention camps, AP found, with parents of three or more children ripped away from their families unless they can pay huge fines.

Police raid homes, terrifying parents as they search for hidden children.

What do you call that if not genocide?

This just in: From Radio NZ https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/checkpoint

Parliament has unanimously declared 'severe human rights abuses' are occurring against the Uyghur people in China's Xinjiang province.

MPs this afternoon debated China's treatment of the Uighur minority and called on the government to work with its international partners to bring the abuses to an end.

ACT's deputy leader Brooke Van Velden told the House it's clear a genocide is taking place in China's Xinjiang province. She said the evidence is "voluminous" and "credible."

The government's previously expressed its grave concerns about the growing number of credible reports of severe human rights abuses against ethnic Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang.

It has stopped short of declaring a genocide, however. Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said that wasn't due to a lack of concern.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Disappointing but not at all surprising. China has NZ at the tip of its spear, with Ardern intent on skewering her own country. Not surprising for a far-left socialist, though.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

The Muslim nation would not sit quietly if the genocide of their people were being carried out. Tens of thousands protested the Muhammad cartoon and were willing to die for the honor of their religion. The reality is the US is more concerned about the Muslims than the Muslims are concerned.

Ardern and her party are shameless hypocrites. The trade money is more important to her than the mass inhumanity the CCP is perpetrating against the Uighurs. She joins others like the NBA for their cowardice in the face of communism.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Forced abortions and forced long-term birth control ARE genocide.

They are just easier because many countries don't consider abortion to be killing.

Is the US committing genocide against young black men in US cities?

No more than they are committing genocide against whites, which are killed more often by police by raw numbers.

Nobody called Tiananmen Square Massacre a genocide, even if 10,000 Chinese were killed there (that's a high estimate), because it wasn't about ethnicity.

The Uighur's treatment is 100% about ethnicity and removing everything culturally that makes an Uighur an Uighur. Their culture, religion, and having Han Chinese "minders" (both people and MANDATORY smartphone tracking apps) to watch the family members for any signs of "undesirable" thoughts, beliefs, and actions, as determined by Beijing. But since all smartphones in China have mandatory govt tracking, Chinese don't think this is odd.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Despicable cowardice, or cynical corrupt self interest, either way Adern, her party and government have failed the NZ people and their principles while revealed as false all the moral pretensions she and her party claim to espouse.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

UPDATE: This statement has been reversed by the Government.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No doubt, something very unusual is going on in Xinjiang Uighur. But, certainly, it's not a genocide as some rights group says. A genocide is the mass murder of people like in Auschwitz or the atrocities in Rwanda and Cambodia. It may be that the Chinese government is trying to re-orient Muslim minorities to toe the novel policy line that the Chinese government allegedly implemented recently. But no one knows exactly what it is.

Probably, the Chinese government is ubiquitously trying to centralize its power over ethnic minorities, casting off traditional multiracial-nation policy and trying to revive old Sino-centrism.  If so, what will the Five Stared Red Flag of the CCP become? Will it become a big-one-star flag?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Semantics is not what’s important.

New Zealand and Canada are the weak links of the Five Eyes 'Alliance'. New Zealand due to their cowardice and Canada due to their incompetence (inviting the Chinese military to observe Canadian combat exercises). Time for Australia, the US and UK to kick them out I think.

An utter disappointment, to say the least. Call a spade a spade.

Ardern just follows the same script.

Still wondering when Beijing is going to figure out that threatening nations and calling them names isn't enhancing their global stature or making nations more interested in doing business with China. The nations and corporations that have a lot of money at stake in China will remain for a time, probably without a lot of new investment as their corporate parents look elsewhere for opportunities. I have to believe China's belligerence will make a lot of potential new investors rethink their plans and invest somewhere else. The treatment of Jack Ma is probably going to prove to be a watershed moment when many Chinese with ideas decide to go abroad to bring their dreams to fruition. No sense in making a fortune in China if the party can take it all away.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@Skeptical care to show who pays for this "independent" legal experts, are they working for free?? or for their own delusional false sense of "self-righteousness". Otherwise, it's another fabrication.

Still wondering when Beijing is going to figure out that threatening nations and calling them names isn't enhancing their global stature or making nations more interested in doing business with China.

Like never? They are on a roll now, with no sign or intention of stopping. And who stops doing business with China? The globalist establishment back in power in the US and continuously in power in Europe?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A rare poor decision from the NZ government. Bad call.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

It is important to note that the GOVERNMENTS of Canada, the UK, etc haven't formally declared that China is committing genocide, but rather that their legislatures have passed a nongovernmental motion that terms China's actions as genocide, without any commitment to actually acting as if China has committed genocide.

There are reasons for this that have nothing to do with China (an official declaration that what China is doing amounts to genocide opens up a path for their citizens to use their courts to force the official declaration that the actions of a certain ME country against Palestinians also amounts to genocide, which would provoke the ire of the US, for one).

But there's also the simple reality that those governments too have realized that their economies are too dependent on trade with China for actual actions against China to be politically viable.

Despite the politicking and dog whistles to a racist element, the NZ PM and government aren't taking a much different position from the rest of the 5 Spies.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Shame on you, Ardern.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Reasonable legal minds can differ over the language of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Precious few court decisions that add precision to the Convention's requirement for evidence of an intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Uyghur population of Xinjiang. Legal minds can (and will) debate whether available evidence demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt whether evidence satisfies the actus reus that China caused / is causing serious bodily or mental harm to Uyghurs in detention, including acts of torture and forced sterilizations; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.”

Regardless of whether there is currently sufficient evidence to bring the charges today, it is clear that a complete and detailed investigation is warranted.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Reminder: The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (“Genocide Convention” or “Convention”), Article II, defines genocide as:

“Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.”

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

[Typo corrected] voiceofokinawa: something very unusual is going on in Xinjiang Uighur . . . [China] casting off traditional multiracial-nation policy and trying to revive old Sino-centrism

No.

Instead, we must finally face the facts of the case. Best that I've read so far is the results of the first independent report by more than 50 global experts in international law, genocide and the China region by the Newlines Institute for Strategy and Policy from March 2021:

This report concludes that the People’s Republic of China (China) bears State responsibility for committing genocide against the Uyghurs in breach of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention) based on an extensive review of the available evidence and application of international law to the evidence of the facts on the ground.

Acts of Genocide. While commission of any one of the Genocide Convention’s enumerated acts with the requisite intent can sustain a finding of genocide, the5evidence presented in this report supports a finding of genocide against the Uyghurs in breach of each and every act prohibited in Article II (a) through (e)

China’s Responsibility for Genocide under the Genocide Convention. China is a highly centralized State in full control of its territory and population, including XUAR, and is a State party to the Genocide Convention. The persons and entities perpetrating the above-indicated acts of genocide are all State agents or organs — acting under the effective control of the State — manifesting an intent to destroy the Uyghurs as a group.

Since a UN Security Council Resolution will be stymied by a veto from China, this matter must be officially referred to the UN’s Human Rights Council in Geneva and to the UN General Assembly, where China can't stop it from finally happening.

@skeptical

1) there is no genocide in Xinjiang, but a large scale de radicalization program and vocational training facilities funded by Chinese govt. No one get killed (except die hard jihadists, separatists, terrorists) in Xinjiang,

2) China did not generate any refugees, and those Uighurs fled Xinjiang are ETIM sympathizers, and sponsored by the western media, NGO’s, in US and Turkey to exaggerate their torture stories in the hand of Chinese.

3) many of its training facilities are winding down and closed since there’s no terrorist attacks since 2016. Xinjiang recorded 6% GDP growth and boom in domestic tourism. A proven success its program works!!

4) Xinjiang birthrate is #2 in China at 1.588% with Tibet #1 at 1.6% surpass the national average birthrate of 1.043% an independent study conducted by National University of Singapore.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

evian1: no genocide in Xinjiang

The independent international legal experts disagree.

Quote: "the evidence presented in this report supports a finding of genocide against the Uyghurs in breach of each and every act prohibited in [Genocide Convention] Article II (a) through (e)." [FNs omitted].

Hard to spin this away from anything else but genocide.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@skeptical few panel of so called paid/sponsored "independent" legal experts together with few disgruntled exiled Uighurs in west to exaggerate their torture stories and re write the definition to fit into "genocide", whereas their sugar daddy said that unsubstantiated evidences of genocide.

the foolish west also ignored the fact that 11.99 million uighurs lived an improved living standard in Xinjiang. All the utter western lies and fabrications.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The New Zealanders pulling their punches doesn't seem to have done them any good. The Chinese foreign ministry reacted with as much indignation to their Parliaments watered down statement as they have to nations who have called the genocide for what it is. And if you look at the debate there were MPs on both sides of the aisle arguing against calling it a genocide and arguing against doing anything that might upset New Zealand's economic relations with China. It is not just Ms. Adern and her FM who are weak and cowardly but their who body politic. It is poetic justice that their less accusatory quasi-legalistic position didn't earn them any favor in Beijing.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

evian1: ""independent" legal experts . . . utter western lies and fabrications"

Yet another review of the list of panel experts clearly shows that they are at the top of their professions; extremely experienced and authoritative experts in their given fields of endeveaour. To even insinuate that these experts and their deliberations are somehow tied to a "sugar daddy" is little short of libelous and defamatory, which usually could be reviewed by the JT Moderator; likely not necessary in this case, however, as the comment was followed by the usual tired party rhetoric to any criticism: "utter western lies and fabrications."

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Explains much:

Over the past decade, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has overseen a dramatic expansion of efforts to shape media content around the world, affecting every region and multiple languages. Leveraging propaganda, disinformation, censorship, and influence over key nodes in the information flow, these efforts go beyond simply “telling China’s story.” Their sharper edge often undermines democratic norms, erodes national sovereignty, weakens the financial sustainability of independent media, and violates local laws. No country is immune: the targets include poor and institutionally fragile states as well as wealthy democratic powers.

And:

But today it is imperative that anyone engaged in the media space—be they journalists, regulators, technology firms, press freedom groups, or even news consumers—acknowledge the influence exerted by China’s authoritarian regime on the news and information circulating in their print publications, radio broadcasts, television programs, and social media feeds. They need to be aware of the CCP’s tactics, alert to the pitfalls inherent in media engagement and partnerships with Chinese state-run outlets, and prepared for the economic and political pressure they may face to adjust content or otherwise submit to pro-Beijing propaganda, disinformation, censorship, or self-censorship.

But Ardern is the liberal champion of the world so anyone criticizing her should be ready to face accusations of being hand in glove with the right wingers.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Adern is a hypoctrite you can be very sure of that, she chooses what she will target and who , its about brownie points with her UN masters and the puppet masters pulling the strings at the CCP. She has no conscience or hart its all for show and virtue.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Chinese don't think this is odd.

You have a point. Genocide was the means to enforce the old one child policy in China and the Chinese ethnicity so they may think nothing of forced abortions.

Despite your point, the holocaust/genocide and forced abortions aren’t the same.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Pathetic. Call it as it is.

NZ needs to diversify its trade away from China to stop being beholden to China's whims.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Unfortunately It's 5,000,000 vs at least 1,500,000,000.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

As expected. I suppose for her it is just "different cultural norms".

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

These are propaganda by the west ; they now set standard of new genocide definition only applicable to China:

1) Free family birth control program is considered as forced sterilization and aborted fetus.

2) Free Mandarin classes to promote inter-racial harmony/communication are now as cultural genocide and annihilation of minority languages, whereas English are also spoken widely by Uighurs and Tibetan.

3) Free buses transportation of labours to cotton fields are viewed as forced /slave labours.

4) Uighur children at boarding school separated from parents are considered as arbitrary detention and kidnapping by authority, claiming by western media without proper support of children ID.

5) Uighurs who fell ill must be organ harvested.

It seems the west /US 5-Lies Alliance are indeed champion and pioneer of all these atrocities globally.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Since ALL the evidence shows a rapid INCREASE of the Uighur population in China, this is the most unsuccessful 'genocide' in the history of mankind.

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

Its all just a fabricated nonsense to feed anti Chinese action by failing western countries.

Is the US committing genocide against young black men in US cities?

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

The Kiwi can't resist the temptation of the 5-Lies not to smear /bash China. Whole bunch of loser, hypocrite and hooligan countries.
