I just can't understand how a country that relies so much on foreign tourism can just shut the door and expect their economy to continue. I'm not saying what they are doing is a bad thing, but I just wonder what many countries can do that also rely on tourists, but cannot allow them in for fear of spreading the virus!

The first conundrum is how to save, preserve what's left of a country's economy with the health and safety of the populace. In New Zealand's case they appear to have achieved containment with no further spread. But this incident shows that having contained the spread, gthe country is still left with self isolation from the rest of the world, which will lead to economic devastation. The only real solution is a global containment at the same time, at the very least among the major developed nations. After which the focus can be turned towards the developing nations.

A very big screw-up by somebody. This is purely down to someone or a few people possibly, not following clearly defined protocols and procedures. Unfortunately some people are just incompetent. The protocols need to refined to accommodate for this.

Usually NZ is better at this!

The quarantine inspectorate have massive egg on their faces!

I heard it was pretty lax and even saw a video of a group going out of the hotel for a walk near Queen St (main shopping street). What a farce! They weren't restricted to their rooms so anyone at the hotel they stayed at could have it. 320 contacts so far. Hope none of them went to the rugby on the weekend. Not safe in NZ anymore. What idiots. Heads should roll.

Military on the borders. I wonder if there will be massive push back and law suits filed to prevent this inhumanity?

Really? When is usually? Or do you mean the fact that they have a tiny isolated and out-of-the-way population makes them better at this?

There was a similar case here in Queensland a while ago but the authority stood firm.

AN AMERICAN resident has been reunited with his dying mother after two weeks in mandatory quarantine but has slammed Queensland’s Chief Health Officer for her “disappointing” handling of the situation.

San Diego resident Mark Talbot made his way on Monday to Hervey Bay to see his terminally ill 83-year-old mother after two weeks in mandatory quarantine at The Westin in Brisbane, despite multiple applications to have his hotel isolation exempted by Chief Health Officer (CHO) Dr Jeannette Young on compassionate grounds and moved to a home residence.

@ sourpuss

Ever scene the NZ show “Border Patrol”?

Each episode usually features at least one person who is fined hundreds of NZ dollars for bringing in a single piece of fruit into the country in their carry-on bags.

“That’s the welcome you give me for having one apple in my backpack??? I’m never coming back here again!!!”

Its been bad from the beginning dont believe what adern says watch what is actually going on,. In the beginning it was self isolation no checking or testing, then it was self quarrantine, then its some other rubbish while all the time she and her ministers been mvoing freely around in THEIR bubble hahaha freaking joke,. Then she lets in the avatar crew in, then the americas cup bunch, and lets anyone with money come n go freely with out restrictions , even bill gates, FFS.

You have to be a complete idiotic moron to believe anyhting adern or her govt tells you !! Jeeesus how dumb are people?

The whole thing has been mishandled but everyone has bought into her hype once more.

She should have just closed the border to incoming tourists from china back in january but she wanted to control everyone instead, the proof is staring everyone right in the face and you still cannot see she is an idiot .

A 24-day run with no new cases was broken on Tuesday when it emerged two women who recently arrived from Britain were allowed out of quarantine early without being tested for the virus, even though one had mild symptoms.

Two women were allowed out of quarantine without being tested. Two. It sounds as if someone (one person) didn't do their job. Does that now require the use of the NZ military?

We had two people that are a source of all the cases pushing 700 in our county

Without global bans on travelers from China this would have been an immense failure.
