The Kiwi premier loves making declarations of Covid being stifled and what not.The thing is,it's the new influenza or something along those lines. It'll be back.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern saying it should help "stamp out" the virus.

What ridiculous hubris. That woman is an embarrassement to NZ.

-33 ( +22 / -55 )

You can always tell the posters who are threatened by strong, intelligent, and competent women.

Well done, NZ. Six months without a community infection is extremely impressive.

23 ( +50 / -27 )

As the country that has probably handled the pandemic better than almost any other major nation, NZ definitely has the right to say this. Really everyone should be looking to NZ and their leadership to model their responses moving forward.

25 ( +38 / -13 )

Congrats New Zealand!

The first country to defeat coronavirus once and for all for the 5th time!!

-7 ( +26 / -33 )

What ridiculous hubris. That woman is an embarrassement to NZ.

Total deaths from COVID-19 on NZ are 26, it 5 per million. If the country has been on a par with others, there would have been about ten thousand.

It's saving teen thousand lives and embarrassment? Is living for fifteen months a failure?

How many other countries have achieved the success of "that woman"?

24 ( +35 / -11 )

Yeah, blame Sydney. Enjoy your lockdown

-17 ( +15 / -32 )

The usual haters and misogynists are triggered - yet again. Attacking PM Ardern. Yet again.

NZ nationally has been lockdown free for 15 months, has by far the lowest death rate in the developed world, does not have a medical system on the verge of collapse - and odds are they will be out of the lockdown soon. (Yes, the vax programme really needs stepping up)

When that happens, expect the usual little misogynist haters to keep on hating from their basements. Waa waa!

17 ( +35 / -18 )

Congrats PM Ardern. The world needs more competent leaders like her.

13 ( +28 / -15 )

Ardern ordered a three-day national lockdown

What an hysteric woman. She is crazy.

-18 ( +15 / -33 )

She said finding the outbreak's source also increased the "ability to circle the virus, lock it down and stamp it out".

No such thing as lock it down and stamp it out. She is good but than you are only as good as your advisors, and these advisors have not yet advised her the obvious that the virus variants will sooner or later catch-up, only immunity against the virus is what will prevent the severe symptoms, and for that vaccination, and that vaccination is just one part to develop that healthy immune system, a healthy immune system has no issue with this virus... wonder if anyone advised her on how to achieve that healthy immune system..

-10 ( +9 / -19 )

First, the economy there is basically nothing. So a full lockdown is nothing for them as it impacts little. If you have lived in NZ, you would know what I meant about zero economy.

-10 ( +13 / -23 )

I cannot understand, when containment policies are so effective, why vaccine roll out in both NZ and Australia are so piss poor.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Good for them, but this cycle of identify, restrict. lockdown, eliminate will go on and on given Covid is now endemic in the world.

-2 ( +12 / -14 )

New Zealand makes it look easy, but I'm sure it isn't. I'm sure they have their issues but the most advanced nation on Earth? Hard to argue against it.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Tobia

Congrats PM Ardern. The world needs more competent leaders like her.

Ah, rare to see biting cynicism on this forum. Well done.

Meanwhile, mention to the flock that the entire "Lord of there Rings" production has moved from NZ to the UK with its billion dollar economic windfall, and they'll stare at their shoes in silence.

You see, real world issues and consequences mean nothing to socialists.

Nothing.

-9 ( +11 / -20 )

Tests showed the man had a version of the Delta strain found in Australia, and Ardern said investigations narrowed down the origin to a person who arrived from Sydney on Aug 7.

Delta strain is believed to be very contagious , know to have escaped vaccines and a real bitch virus. It would be interesting to see how the NZ strategy holds against it.

Am dreading two weeks in a hotel

That said I appreciate the immigration authority giving me a visa in pretty quick time.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Yes so far they have prevented spread and death. But eventually the world will open up and then we will see how well they continue to "work". And at what cost?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Meanwhile, mention to the flock that the entire "Lord of there Rings" production has moved from NZ to the UK with its billion dollar economic windfall, and they'll stare at their shoes in silence.

Pathetic deflection. All the NZers I've mentioned it to have expressed disappointment and lamented the loss of economic opportunity, as have I. Got anything relevant?

Im not sure you're putting 2 and 2 together here.

Lets think reeeeal hard. Do these insane and perpetual Zero Covid lockdowns which destroy economic activity have maybe perhaps kinda something to do with the production moving out of the country? Or is it just a coincidence?

Let the New Zealand Government do what’s best for New Zealand. People commenting here against the lockdown fail to understand that the virus cannot be controlled any other way. If all countries globally had done a hard lockdown together for a month and simultaneously isolated the infected people then they would have all defeated the pandemic long ago! This should have been done with proper financial handouts to every citizen of the world. In addition it had to happen globally and simultaneously. But the greediness of nations such as The US and Japan where they put money before human life has made this a never ending pandemic! Yes, many people recover from Covid-19 but 30% of their lungs won’t recover completely for a long time. To add on, many people have lost loved ones and this is due to the poor decisions taken by the authorities who implemented half hearted strategies to combat COVID-19! New Zealand has done exceptionally well regardless of what some might say because human life is more important than money!

4 ( +9 / -5 )

@Jim That fanciful wish for the entire world to do a hard lockdown is beyond insane.

that teeny weeny little island in the middle of the South Pacific has not been able to do it. Hence the 5th victory lap by Arden.

Your post just reinforces my belief that Unintended Consequences should be a mandatory course taught in high schools.

-7 ( +7 / -14 )

That was fast, well done New-Zealand.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

some weeks ago i have found article here something like "New Zealand won over covid".

In case if I am kiwi i will feel embarassed from this PM/today not using word admin feels its "offensive" so I will stay polite/.

reality is that no one country "won" over covid yet.covid is here and will stay for a while...get it right and deal with it.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

So, who was it who arrived in locked down NZ? Presumably someone wealthy who threw Arden an appropriately fat bung.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

I heard, though not confirmed, that he was vaccinated in Australia so no problem.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

What an hysteric woman. She is crazy.

Classic language. The sentence emphasizes that she is a woman, but then inserts the word "hysteric" because we know women are famously prone to suffering bouts of "hysteria" - it's why they shouldn't have positions of responsibility, right?

In the language of the reactionary right, a female who does something is an "hysterical woman". For a man, it's a "decisive action".

She can say that she has help save thousands of lives over the past year and allowed New Zealanders to live almost normal lives while the rest of the world had lockdowns.

5 ( +11 / -6 )

Lets think reeeeal hard. Do these insane and perpetual Zero Covid lockdowns which destroy economic activity have maybe perhaps kinda something to do with the production moving out of the country? Or is it just a coincidence?

It was decided long before this lockdown, the only true 'lockdown' in 15 months or so. The others were both partial and, due to their effectivenes, temporary. Preferable to 'insane' and 'perpetual' waves of infections, which are occuring worldwide. Further, NZs Covid response wasn't given as a reason so it's mere conjecture anyway.

And how does it compare to the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics not allowing any foreign spectators and the economic benefits they would bring? And I'll also see your Lord of the Rings distraction and raise you an Avatar, currently being made in New Zealand. The reason being "because the country had mostly eliminated its covid-19 pandemic."

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Excellent move NZ! Enjoy.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

In the language of the reactionary right, a female who does something is an "hysterical woman". For a man, it's a "decisive action".

I see a lot of hysterical men begging to be locked in their own home so I guess it's now a gender-neutral term now

Reading the posts above was a pretty depressing way to start one's morning. Not a lot of thought given to what each of us can do to stop the spread of Covid-19 in our communities. Everyone sniping at each other, blaming this or that for the outbreaks we are suffering through. Maybe instead people should ask what things they can do every day to reduce the spread? Nah, too much to expect. Nobody thinks about their duty to others any more. It's all about me and the other guy, or "hysterical woman" is always the problem.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

At some point they will have to let it in, or remain isolated. Few in, few out, lots of quarantine. Permanently.*

They can conveniently put that off until they conclude what must be the world's slowest vaccination roll out.

Excludes billionaires. Billionaires always welcome.
-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Bobo

Yeah, blame Sydney. Enjoy your lockdown

She wasn't blaming, she just said the carrier case came from NSW, that's not pointing the finger that's just stating info. If all goes well then tomorrow the nation will be out of lockdown except for Auckland so I think we're good

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I'm envious of New Zealand. I'd take their hard lockdown for a few weeks to get rid of the virus, over having to deal with it half-assedly for months on end.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I love seeing so many people so upset at how well NZ has handled this (with the exception of vaccinations). Of course there will be people comparing it to the performance of other countries, but really what’s the point. There isn’t one. It’s just people hate that a little country in the South Pacific can prove them wrong and show them how it should be done.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

love seeing so many people so upset at how well NZ has handled this (with the exception of vaccinations).

It's hyper-partisanship. If Ardern were a staunch conservative, they'd be supporting NZ's measures. These people determine who they hate based on political leanings, not policies.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Isolate the continent of Australia, don't let anyone out.

So you are, and coming up with 5.

Lets think reeeeal hard. Do these insane and perpetual Zero Covid lockdowns

They eliminate the virus, so hardly insane. This is the second one in a year and a half, so hardly perpetual.

which destroy economic activity

Actually the opposite. It has enabled NZ to continue pretty much the same as before.

have maybe perhaps kinda something to do with the production moving out of the country?

No. It doesn't.

Or is it just a coincidence?

It's not a coincidence either.

Strangerland

I'm envious of New Zealand. I'd take their hard lockdown

Singular "lockdown"?? At how many lockdowns would you draw the line? Any?

for a few weeks to get rid of the virus

Have "they gotten rid of the virus"? Do remind us when the next lockdown comes along.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

COVID will never be "stamped out." New Zealand and Australia look silly trying to have zero cases. With all the available tools out there, it is befuddling why they continue down this path.

With the vulnerable vaccinated, they should continue pushing the vaccines, but we already know there are a limited amount of healthy folks who will get it.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Wouldn't work anywhere else though, especially not the USA, UK or Japan.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Worrh repeating as it holds true in most English-speaking countries:

StrangerlandAug. 19  11:50 pm JST

It's hyper-partisanship. If Ardern were a staunch conservative, they'd be supporting NZ's measures. These people determine who they hate based on political leanings, not policies.

In the infamous words of Def Leppard it’s, “Sad But True.” (Wait, it wasn’t Def Leppard, it was Skid Row.)

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Have "they gotten rid of the virus"? Do remind us when the next lockdown comes along.

The point is to stop community spread and they’ve been very successful at doing exactly that. It’s like with any other outbreak. They’ll happen but when they do you have to block it off from further spread. Just because there are measles outbreaks sometimes doesn’t mean tools to fight them aren’t successful at stopping the outbreak.

Wouldn't work anywhere else though, especially not the USA, UK or Japan.

Not when they don’t even try. It’d be hard, yes, but those three have basically thrown in the towel long before the fight’s over. Some in the USA are still fighting but there’s such a lack of cooperation over everything that it’s a losing battle. The biggest hindrance to beating Covid is the immense lack of cooperation.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What's wrong with the negative comments here ? 6 months without new cases, if that is not FACT enough for you about how NZ handle this pandemic, well, you're just a bag full of hatred and a sore loser.

Compare that to our beloved Nippon, leaders that people no longer listen to, indecisive and hides information from the public.

Yeah, I'd vote for this woman 10/10 over any Japanese politicians.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

As if they found the cure for Covid.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

NZ has a small population: approximately 5 million. The Nagoya metro area has double the population at almost ten million individuals. The strictures for lockdown are easier to command with a small population.

New Zealand vaccination numbers:

954,415 are fully vaccinated. Which is essentially 20%.

1.7 million have received one dose. Which is approximately 35%.

Approximately 50% of the population have some form of immunity.
