NZ taxpayers will help EV makers to make EV "popular" by own tax sponsoring-did I get it right?

On a global scale little NZ's emissions are irrelevant, if they stopped ALL petrol and diesel use for example the only benefits would be felt by NZ having cleaner air. Until countries like China, US, Brazil, India and Russia (for example) clean up their acts there will be no difference at all, globally.

wonder what "lower-income families" means in numbers. in any case, those not in that category, who presumably pay more in taxes, will also therefore be paying for this program. also... what about those not in the "lower-income families" group who own gas-guzzlers?

this is not a statement against this plan, but there really isn't a lot of detail or clarity here. hope NZ taxpayers are being furnished with more comprehensive explanation as to the use of their contributions.

Seeing as some people are deliberately confused, a plain language explanation.

Poor people who need vehicles buy cheap old ones, which are the most polluting ones.

The government is going to help them buy EVs instead, possibly through a trade in system (which will get the polluting ones out of circulation)

Not the end solution, but to borrow from a good writer, possibly the end of the beginning at solving the problem.

But I see one significant roadblock. The plan is based around the economic theory that mass production to meet subsidized demand reduces prices across the board generating market demand, which is a pretty sound theory that usually works in reality, IF there's not a critical shortage .

But the sanctions against Russia (and Donetsk and Luhansk) means there are going to be critical shortages at present production rates, as the supply chain for critical metals and consumables used in the production of the high efficiency batteries and computer chips EVs need have to be built from scratch, right out to finding and then building the infrastructure to extract them in their raw state.

That means that instead of a small bottleneck that business economics will keep reducing in the regular business cycle, there's a huge roadblock that it's going to take huge government investment to reduce, in a period longer than an election cycle.

But I still have questions. While cheap old cars may be the most polluting while driving, what about the pollution from manufacture? The plan would suggest an increase in manufacturing and thus an increase in whatever pollution is caused at that stage. I hope that has been taken into account.

The carbon footprint of an electric car's manufacture and lifetime is less than that of an ICE car. So it's fine.

Money will be collected from manufacturers and retailers who pass the costs on to consumers with higher prices. Tax by stealth, politicians shifting the blame to the private sector.

But if the ICE car is already manufactured, I don't think it's so straightforward. Should we not be comparing the running of an older ICE car versus the manufacture and running of an electric car?
