Four neighbors come together to help a fifth. Keeping peace and security for the tiny nation of Solomon Islands. They have had internal issues for decades but can rely on help from the family of Pacific nations. As it should be.

This kind of thing will occur in other countries that China is trying to dominate. They think they can just buy a nation's leaders and the populace will fall into line.

Sounds easy and cheap to solve. The internet outputs following information. ‘A COLT PEACEKEEPER pistol is currently worth an average price of $1,244.73 used . The 12 month average price is $1,244.73 used.’ lol

Little wonder that the citizens of The Solomons are rising up against their pro-China government. They recognize their children would be crippled by debt to pay for unneeded infrastructure, to fund the crooked Solomons leaders, and will likely surrender large parts of their territory to China when they default the loans.

Time for Taiwan to step back up with $US billions, as well as a large peacekeeping force. Taiwan should lend the Solomons money to rebuild, and provide them with a regular supply of food and medicine.

The people have spoken - dump China, support Taiwan

Go back to supporting Taiwan, problem solved!

All that is happening is NZ rushing in behind Australia to score some brownie points by protecting the Chinese interests in the Islands.

@ Bradley - I cannot disagree. The majority of governments are gutless in turning their back on diplomatic recognition of Taiwan in favour of a genocidal totalitarian state that despises freedom and crushes democracy.

As I keep saying, the US needs to lead the way in recognizing Taiwan, and other free nations like Japan will immediately follow.

What's in it for the US?

Protecting citizens safety is hardly protecting Chinese interests. And there are Fiji and Papua New Guinea peace keepers there also, but you can go on ignoring their contribution if you like.

The Government will need to survive the next election and from the looks of things they will lose badly and at that point they may well change back to Taiwan recognition but not before facing many threats from China if it does so.

At this point Australia does not give a crap about China. China has burnt bridges for a couple of years now, this is about keeping China from sending troops there. Who rules the Solomon Islands is a matter for it's people, not for foreign nations. Not for China, the US or Australia to elects or change the leadership there.

So New Zealand will join Australia defending PRC interests against the will of the Solomon Islands people to be rid of their Chinese corrupted thugs in the capital. Nice work Australia and New Zealand. I will long remember, and never forgive, your duplicity.

I tend to agree. I detest the PRC and strongly support Taiwan. But please realize that the very second the US did that, effectively renouncing the "one China" policy, the Chinese would go to war with both Taiwan and the US. Such a war would very likely result in a nuclear exchange. So when you say these things keep this in mind.

Quiet a few folks on here today exercising their special powers.

It will never happen. Both the US and China are too greedy and power hungry to destroy their positions.

"de-escalating conflict"

In many cases it means a 12 gauge shot gun and a fire hose.

China would very much go to war to prevent an independent Taiwan. To do otherwise would be the end of the CCP. They have staked their reputation on reunification either "peacefully" or through war. It is fundamental to their identity. Failing to stop Taiwan from becoming independent, or losing a war with Taiwan and the US to prevent independence would be the end of the CCP and probably the end of the PRC. I am not saying it is even guaranteed the Chinese would win such a war, but be assured they would fight even if they ended up losing.

Do not make up facts DT. It degrades from your normal reliable commentary.

If you had your way they would have forced regime change. Not their job to choose leaders for the Solomon Islands and they did not lift a finger to protect parliament. Solomon's police did that alone.

Some people seem very quick to make false accusations of Australia supporting the PRC and are blind to the facts. A disgusting shame!
