This 23-year-old Nigerian man(coward) is a joke. Allegedly he was studying to be a mechanical engineer (check the year books for his picture) and failed to build a explosive device. Like father like son, his dad should be investigated also for ties with Al Quida. How would the father not know what his son was doin? He funded everything from travel to education. I can not wait for the follow up story on this one. Thank goodness the USA is opening a holding facility for terrorists in Illonois. He will get what he deserves.

This is actually a fairly typical profile for an islamic terrorist. The 9/11 hijackers were also mainly engineering students.

And neither is it surprising that he got "radicalized" in London, aka Londonistan. Plenty of radical islamic preachers there.

What is sad to see is how the press is trying blank out the ideology behind this. This was not a random "Nigerian", this was another martyr who wanted to go to paradise by killing infidels.

Another tragedy which I fear may serve to radicalize some elements of the American public and lead to prejudice against Arab or African or European Muslims. Spirits are indeed low at the Dearborn Kabob House these days. The consensus among the staff and customers is that as President Obama said in the tragic case of Major Hassan, we must not jump to conclusions! This young Nigerian's faith played no role in the failed bombing, if it was in fact a bomb, in the technical sense of the word.

Sorry Juan, but the motives behind the majority of thier actions is going to keep pointing us in the same direction. While its good to not judge the whole by the actions of MANY lone rangers, wanna-bes, orginazations of religious fanatics, or whatever else you want to call them, they all have 1 single minded motivation for their actions. Islam is not able to be criticised or offended in any way, and all who defy this whether they are nations, people, or groups of people are usually put under duress if not worse because of it.

Btw, my uncle just happens to be muslim. And sadly the stuff coming out of his mouth shows that he's not quite right in the head either... unfortunately its looking pretty bright for rabid islamophobia around the globe.

Hmm? I've read several articles about this topic and have yet to see one whitewash the radical ideology. Of course, we don't really know that muh about the guy yet - much like Richard Reid I am sure we will get the whole story soon enough.

The press needs to report the facts. The blogosphere is the gaping maw that says anything. Try not to confuse the two. And who exactly is "trying [to] blank out the ideology"?

" And who exactly is "trying [to] blank out the ideology"? "

The press and the intellectuals, like Professor Juan Cole (the real one, as well as his JT clone here).

No matter how many islamic martyrs committ suicide bombings to go to paradies, they keep telling that we must look at everything EXCEPT the religion/ideology that motivates them.

WilliB Though a few may be so PC as to ignore relevant data, most do not. I regularly read or listen to the NYTimes, BBC, CBC Radio, Washington Post, etc. and generally speaking I haven't noticed anyone shying away from looking at the reasons, both religious and ideological (as well as economic and social), why young people are swayed into committing terrorist attacks. If I do, I ignore it.

Perhaps you should balance your media intake.

H, is there one 'source' you've listed who isn't notably left of center?

Perhaps you should balance your media intake.

All of the media you mention shy away from showing the direct line between islamic jihadist teaching and jihadist action. They always try, in line with modern Political Correctness, to repaint every jihadist act as a result of powerty, frustration, colonialism, etc. They are firmly stuck in the dogma that all of these jihadist who pop up after receiving religios indoctrination, are misunderstanders of the religion of peace.

Sorry, but you will have to do you own thinking in this one. Read up on islamic teaching, look at the facts (where jihadism occurs, and what the jihadists have in common), and then ask yourself if what the NYT and BBC commentators tell you really makes sense.
