Horrible news. RIP to all those lost.

Surprising that so new an aircraft should fail so devastatingly, for it to mace the creator described ir had to come in at a fairly steep angle, so it wasn’t an attempted crash landing after something went wrong, this was fairly catastrophic failure. Or I suppose we have to consider as at least a possibility until they get the black box, that it was flown in to the ground deliberately.

I've just read the BBC report on this tragic incident and in their report it states that the pilot reported a technical issue to air traffic control not long after take off and was requesting a return back to Addis Ababa.

Very similar circumstances to the Lion Air crash.

Ground them all until this is resolved. Two fatal crashes in 5 months of the same model, with apparently similar circumstances, is two too many.

The NYT is also noting similarities to the Lion Air crash. Only natural to be concerned, so I'm not sure who's downvoting such comments.

In that case, investigations by the Indonesian and American aviation authorities determined that the Lion Air plane’s abrupt nose dive might have been caused by updated Boeing software that was meant to prevent a stall but that can send the plane into a fatal descent if the altitude and angle information being fed into the computer system is incorrect.

The change in the flight control system, which can override manual motions in the Max model, was not explained to pilots, according to some pilots’ unions.

After that crash, Boeing said that it was continuing “to evaluate the need for software or other changes as we learn more from the ongoing investigation.” It was unclear if the company had made any changes.

As others have said, RIP. I'm flying on one of these this summer (Southwest) so I hope they figure out what's going on.

A little perspective here.

Nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among young adults ages 15-44.

Airplane crashes are tragic events that sadly take the lives of many people all at one time. Emotional responses are expected, yet knee jerk reactions are inappropriate as well.

Give the investigators and PROFESSIONALS a chance to do their jobs, then you can make an educated opinion about what should happen moving forward!

look back at the history of DC10's It took several crashes before they admitted and acted upon the facts.

Yubaru, normally I would agree with you in that flying is of course statistically much safer than almost any other activity, but when the cause is a specific known fault with a particular aeroplane, you want to get that fixed, and not use that model until it is.

And now Europe has banned these planes.
