Oh, just forget about NK. People get spun up over everything. NK is not going to wake up one morning and decide to launch a missile that may or may not have a workable device.

What, you think Dear Leader wants to be vaporized?

Japans private sector (Interstella Inc) recently launched a small rocket which then launched a satalite. This only local news, not world news.

Although Interstella claim it is in preparation to build a moon base, it does seem that Japan also has intetesting rocket technology.

This weapons can definitely reach Japan.

What are we waiting for?

For a Japanese city to be destroyed?

We've seen this happen in the past. Being too pacifist and weak.... Is just as bad as being too aggressive.

Can we be a normal country again please with a normal military. I'm not asking to conquer Korea again.

Our neighbors are aggressive with nuclear weapons and rising military budgets with no restrictions like Japan has. China, Russia, N. Korea.

Change needs to happen if Quad can be a credible detterant. If you expect Japan to contribute and help in a possible conflict.

Btw, the re-entry vehicle of any IRBM descends at speeds on the order of Mach8 or greater. They are all "hypersonic" on the way in. That term is getting used loosely and the understanding of what's going on is lost. What is new-ish is the ability to maneuver on descent at such high speeds. Pershing II, a 1980s IRBM from the US had a radar seeker and some maneuverability to allow it to refine it's aim point on descent to improve accuracy. It also did a pop up maneuver on descent to slow down a bit to a speed at which it could maneuver before descending again with the radar on.

North Korea says it tested new hyper sonic missile all in the name of EXTORTING THE WORLD FOR FOOD! Instead of making missiles the the fat guy and his Alfalfa looking sister should find a way to feed the people!!

Read a website called 38 North and you will see the North Koreans have been very busy developing their agriculture sector after huge floods destroyed much of their farmland. DPRK "leadership" (pardon me while I swallow my vomit) are acutely aware of their agricultural shortcomings. These weapons are about a lot more than just extorting food from the world. DPRK is as much concerned about the future viability of the CCP and Vladimir Putin's Russia as they are worried about US and South Korean intentions.

To date, the U.S., Russia and China are the only countries who have successfully demonstrated this capability (and it seems that the Russians and Chinese are a bit ahead...)

You are confusing technologies. These are hypersonic glide vehicles. They are launched on a very conventional ballistic missile and the re-entry vehicle has some degree of maneuverability on its way down to the target. Russia stuck an Iskander ballistic missile under a fighter and calls this a "hypersonic guided missile". Well, sort of. It would be like a US aircraft firing off an ATACMS. Not sure what the military utility is but it looks cool. Only the US and Australia have successfully demonstrated an air breathing hypersonic engine, both are scramjets. That is the Holy Grail because these can fly at lower altitudes and would be much harder to detect. China has had difficulty developing its own HGVs so yeah, I am kind of doubtful the North Koreans somehow leapfrogged the Chinese.

Launched with a hypersonic rubber band...

Alas, with the new "Swamp America is back" regime, this will work.

Oh sure, let's go back to "love letters" and failed summits....because those worked so well....

Yes thankyou north Korea we can see that !

Thankyou for stating the obvious and yes we know your still there .

North Korea says it tested new hypersonic missile

But of course, and next they have a warp-speed one. Appear dangerous and crazy and keep the other side on their toes to extract concessions...... the old formula. Alas, with the new "Swamp America is back" regime, this will work.

He has also called for more longer-range intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear-powered submarines, and tactical nuclear arms.

And yet they complained about Australia getting nuclear propulsion. What a hypocrite.

To date, the U.S., Russia and China are the only countries who have successfully demonstrated this capability

Australia was one of the first countries to develop and test scramjet (hypersonic) technology over a decade ago. In 2007 Australia successfully launched and tested a mach 10 hypersonic engine.

One reason for the technology sharing of AUKUS.

Hypersonic, that’s in the range of Mach 5 to 10, 6174–12350 km per hour or 1715–3430 meters per second. That’s when considering the distance, an alert time span of at best 10 to 12 minutes, if you really know the start point and trajectory, therefore much less when at speeds of more than Mach 5 and waiting, analyzing, internal communication flow delays considered. Just let fall everything out of your hands and leave for a bunker or other maybe safer place… Personally I think, something like a combined ground , air and live satellite surveillance has become necessary with those new parameters. They are surely too ideologically crazy there to just only rely on their words to prefer meetings and negotiation tables. The danger are maybe not so much the younger Kim’s but those now already stone old generals, who surely want to see , before they soon all going into coffins, a final outcome and militarily enforced decision of what they are waiting for since 1953.

Russians sold its scramjet technology to everybody but Americans and Japanese. Wouldn't be surprising if North Koreans acquired the design. Chinese and Koreans are confirmed to have them.

But even then, this hypersonic weapon simply could be a glider mounted on top of a ballistic missile and released at the altitude of 30 km or something like that.

Noted and granted. But I would say that buying illicit technology and getting it to work are two very different things. At least over such a short period of time.

North Korea claims it successfully tested new ‘HYPERSONIC’ missile system:

Looks like the lethal 'hypersonic' missile must be in fashion. After Russia, US and China, it is NK now ..

What can those tests mean?

Ready to launch the missiles anywhere anytime..?

Japan ready to spend some real money on defense yet? You ought to be.

Great news! cry the masses. Can we eat it?

Yup, Russia must have enabled the not very Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to take quantum leaps in weapons technology.

I seriously doubt that the N. Koreans have even a rudimentary capability

Russians sold its scramjet technology to everybody but Americans and Japanese. Wouldn't be surprising if North Koreans acquired the design. Chinese and Koreans are confirmed to have them.

Their previous (I don't know about this one) missiles were derived from Russian or Soviet models and the parts came from Russia through intermediaries. It's obvious even with a cursory glance. A wonderful example is the Hwasong-10.

The DPRK is not China or Russia, and the DPRK simply does not have the means to develop and build these missiles on its own. Either financially or materially.

No, it's not! It's just hot air as usual!!!

Anyone care to read NorK's written statement to the UNGA on 27 September? (it may not match the speech word for word. Twelve page PDF):

https://estatements.unmeetings.org/estatements/10.0010/20210927/f9hI1UVcyVQ6/Ina2tpqa5rlW_en.pdf

Spoiler alert: if everyone stops isolating NorK, totally leaves the area, totally stops talking about NorK, then totally isolates South Korea, AND promises not to interfere in what comes next in their "righteous right" for reunification . . . well, THEN the Korean War ends, and then there will have peace and security!

At least for awhile. Until they come up with their next nuclear-tipped demands.

You just can't make this stuff up!

And now for something completely different: Cue the giggling squad of synchopant social media influencers. To quote and free-range apply a great modern day philosopher: "Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help I'm being repressed!"

Interesting, no report of the 8-ton warhead ROK ballistic missile, the biggest and the most powerful non-nuclear missile ever developed.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

The top U.S. weapons developers compared lighting a hypersonic missile engine motor and keeping it going to "lighting a match in a hurricane."

To date, the U.S., Russia and China are the only countries who have successfully demonstrated this capability (and it seems that the Russians and Chinese are a bit ahead...)

So I seriously doubt that the N. Koreans have even a rudimentary capability just as I doubt their ability to launch a SLBM from anything other than a submerged barge under very controlled circumstances.
