Nationalism is a toxic and corrosive ideology. It destroys society.

In this video Y. Harari differentiates nationalism from fascism. https://www.ted.com/talks/yuval_noah_harari_why_fascism_is_so_tempting_and_how_your_data_could_power_it?language=en

Irish nationalism is about self determination and freedom for the occupied 6 counties. It bears little relation to toxic nationalism elsewhere. These dissidents have very little support and do not represent Republican aspirations. They have been condemned by Sinn Fein who are working towards an inclusive United Ireland.

Briexit should include giving the north back to Ireland. I experienced the bombings in London and shootings on the Falls Road and Shakhill and NI police violence. Nobody wants to take backward steps. @zichi is right.

I’m with you on the idea of a united Ireland.
That said, do you really trust Sinn Fein as a party committed to peace and inclusivity?
Star-viking
Goodlucktoyou,
Northern Ireland and its people are no one’s to give to anyone. The Good Friday Agreement, massively endorsed North and South enshrines that. We are not tokens in anyones game.

The “occupied six counties”? You do realise that such language is hardly even used by Sinn Fein these days. The people who do use it are some Irish Americans, and the people who murdered Lyra McKee
Toasted Heretic
Yes. Of course the party has had its share of problematic members over the years (like any other democratic party) but the Sinn Fein of today is absolutely about inclusitivity.
I trust SF more than Fine Gael or Fianna Fail and they are gaining seats all the time in the Dail. Doing a lot of work to bring to attention the homeless, too.
In the meantime, an article about life (and untimely death) post ceasefire from the late Lyra McKee

Partition made tokens of all citizens of NI/6 counties, a chara. It's an abomination and should never have happened.
As long as partition continues, the 6 counties are occupied.
One can support unification without supporting paramilitaries. I do not, repeat, not support the murderers of this journalist. Or any violence. They do not represent anyone but themselves.

@star Viking. Don’t know your experience, but I agree, we in our armchairs have no right to dictate to indigenous peoples.
but study: British imperialism, catholic vs Protestant, poverty, drug and alcoholism, domestic violence, misogyny, patriarchy, obesity and poor diet, racism, gangs, teenage pregnancy and abortion...Ireland N and S is a sociologists dream.
i wish them well. Germany reunited, so can Ireland and Korea.

I'm not talking from an armchair - Norn Iron born and bred.

Partition happened because the people in the North, generally, did not want to be part of an all-Ireland republic - and the people in the South either did not recognise it, or thought "they'll wake up one day and realize they love it".
Northern Ireland is occupied, by the people of Northern Ireland: Protestant, Catholic, and Dissenter.
The only way to an all-Ireland state is by fully accepting that. It may be a step too far for many.

The Brits should just give up their colony in North Ireland. The days of colonialism are long past.
