If anyone is not insane, it is him.

Foxie,

Would you care to expand on that thought? It can be interpreted as support for his beliefs and actions, or as a wish to see him punished like in a more "normal" way.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

As we've heard many a time, Norwegian prisons are based around rehabilitation rather than punishment and are viewed as "holiday camps" by some. If one truly wanted to punish Breivik, then perhaps throwing him in a mental institution would be the harshest sentence. A sane man being pumped full of drugs he doesn't need, listening to the screams of the insane day in and day out, will not stay sane for long. I can think of few thing more torturous.

@Ekkusaito

In fact Breivik has him self stated that he would consider death the only respectable sentence, lifetime in prison laughable, while he would consider being drugged in a mental institution "cruel and unusual punishment"

He will get what's coming in prison, a lifetime of eating urine and glass laced food. Never forget this "Knight" is a lonely, sad, child killer.

@SquidBert. Interesting to know. Thanks.

He is insane, now please put him in an insane asylum for the rest of his life.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

He's not insane. His victims were killed for political reasons, not random kids. He has no schizophrenia, they are completely off. He might have what the second analysis indicated but I don't know. He should get his 21 years in jail or death penalty if he wanted it.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Squidbert: He is not insane, these attacks were carefully planned and even now in the court he behaves like he supports fully what he did. Getting away with insanity would be way too easy. Unfortunately, the laws in Norway are not good enough for what he deserves. I want him sentenced for life in prison (a Gulag or some Labor Camp like in N. Korea would be perfect) and I mean with that until he dies there.

@zichi

Yes you are right. The weird thing is that it is the defendants experts witness that are claiming he is sane while it is the prosecutors witness that claims he is insane. I don't think I ever saw that in a trial before.

The defendants lawyers has stated that one or their main tasks during the trial is (following the defendants wishes) is to prevent the sentence of "forced mental treatment"

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Thanks Foxie, you had me worried there for a while. :)

I think that mostly comes down to the legal definition of insane in Norwegian law.

It has already been stated in Norwegian press that no matter what the outcome will be. A special wing will be built at the Ila prison, where Breivik will spend the rest of his time. So even if he was sentenced to treatment, he wouldn't be treated at a normal mental institution.

zichi,

I think he must have realised, if he's found insane he'll be sent to an institution, pumped full of drugs and will never know the time of day again.

I actually believe he is more evil (or crazy depending on your view) than that. I think he don't want that because it would devalue the political message that he is trying to forward. If he is deemed crazy, his political manifest (he thinks) would be of no value. ( Not that it has any actual value, its just ramblings, but that's what I think he thinks)

Insane and Evil.

One of the few cases where the death penalty should be mandatory.

Cant believe l am actually going to say this but l agree 100% with you

Hhaha, state sanctioned murder, that will make things all better and bring the dead back to life.

The man can be studied and we can learn from him, prevention is the best medicine. Glad Norway has not changed its laws due to a nutter or perceived threat from nutters. Norway is a grown up country and has dealt with his matter in a manner most countries never could.

Justice is the name of the game not blubbering emotional people demanding revenge like in the dark ages.

"Justice is the name of the game not blubbering emotional people demanding revenge like in the dark ages."

Heh, no revenge demanded by me, I just fail to see why the people of Norway should have to finance housing and feeding this abomination for the rest of his natural.

JohhnyGlitterball,

Yep and studying the guy will bring closure for the families of those he killed and injured. I suppose you think he can be rehabilitated too?

I for one firmly believe that if you take more than one life in spree like his you should automatically forfeit your own life. You do not deserve to be studied, you do not deserve to live at taxpayers expense the rest of your life. You do not deserve to breathe any longer simple as that.

Death penalty is not an option in Norway, so Treatment, Jail, or Treatment in Jail are the only options available.

I think that throwing him in an asylum is the smartest options as it belittles him in the eyes of those who would otherwise potentially idolize him (there are people sending him fan mail from all over the world).

@cletus

Once you bring cost into whther someone should live or de, you are treading-down a dangerous path.

Luckily the people of the democratic country of Norway have a more adult way of looking at crime and punishment. Huge advances have been made in studying violent criminal and prisoners in jails and mental homes. It takes time to study these matters, much easier to suggest dark methods such as doing the same thing to the convict as he did to his victims.

" Huge advances have been made "

Name some.....

Yes cost is a factor, so to is escape risk, and the risk of copy cats trying do do similar to impress him. Not to mention the phsyco groupies he will attract.

Im not suggesting they do the same thing to him as he did to his victims. Im suggesting a more humane way which is a liberty he did not afford his 77 victims.

Mmm, what advances have been made from studying people like him? Ever heard of profiling, didn't come about by itself. How about those likely to become serial killers by behaviour in their youths? Only found out bystudies. In the old days a kid who killed and tortured animals was sent to refoem school or juvenile prison. These days we know that child has mostl likely serious mental problems and most likely anti social traits that could lead to hurting or killing humans later in life.

Don't take my word for it, there is evidence available online very easily these days. Better to read up about a sublect before name calling another poster.

whats scary is how typical brevick is of the many extremists that populate europe. he has the leftwing desire for a totalitarian state that will jail those guilty of what his kind consider to be thought crimes and he has the euro-right's obsession with race and long-faded national glory.

pathetic.

Study him forever....

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Too bad no death penalty in Norway, because if somebody deserves to be hung it is this sick NAZI bastard! I do hope and pray that the burns in hell for all of eternity, crazy or not, let him burn!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Kudos to those who support capital punishment here. I too agree that would bring the best closure to the families left behind. But since that is not an option I then have to agree with the mental institution as I too agree that would discredit every thing he is trying to say and what he did. Personally I think any one who would murder that many innocent children for "political reasons" is indeed insane. That didn't come out quite right, I didn't mean to say that murdering an adult for political reasons is OK, it is still an unjustified murder.

Ever heard of profiling, didn't come about by itself. How about those likely to become serial killers by behaviour in their youths?

The psychological science of criminal profiling can trace its roots to Thomas Bond who tried to use emerging psycholigical research to form a more complete picture of Jack the Ripper, the practice was continued and heavily influenced primarily by the US Justice Department via Howard Langer and James Brussel and by English prosecutors. Other nation's contributions have been peripheral and as far as I can tell no great breakthroughs have come courtesy of the Norwegian criminal detention system. Study is important but justice is the top priority.

I think that finding him insane would be a cowardly thing. If they find him insane it won't be because of the existance of a long standing and personality altering disorder, thus far they haven't really pegged down anything, but because they are afraid of admitting that a sane man under his own guidence was capable of planning and comitting atrocities on a scale previously unimaginable in that country. And they're afraid that this will prove that their current criminal justice system isn't up to handling someone of this level of human evil.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Anders Behring Breivik, sane or insane? He did the crime, so he should do the time. Let him rot in prison, just like any other serial murderer. Hellish prison life is worse that a quick death. Norway will handle him in their own way. We must respect other nation's Sovereignty.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

TheQuestion; Traces it's roots to. Not saying it was invented by looking at convicts but if you do know about this subject you would also know how much has been learnt from studying. Also he is very unusual in beinga spree killer who was caught alive. Generally spree killers will turn their weapon on themselves leaving us to speculate on what drove them on their spree. This man is very interesting and a lot could be elarnt from him especially how he used the internet, and what motivated him in this way.

It is unlikely but his crimes could be copied and we need to be able to spot teh signs, if even one spree killer is stopped becuse of lessons learnt, it is worth it.

He may not act like a human but we are and we must treat him in a humane manner otherwise we are also criminals.

he is the kind of monster that political correctness creates.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

"he is the kind of monster that political correctness creates."

Or perhaps he just listened to too many nuts ranting and raving about Islam on the net.

I just wanted to add, that social workers have been worried about Breivik's mental health since he was a small child (2 years, if I remember correctly). At that time his mother tried to get help , because he was "difficult to take care of"
