Free samples is how a street drug pusher gets a person addicted and on his income books.

Someone has watched a few too many movies. "First one's free kid, then you pay"

Of course the junkie will pay - with his/her health.

I was making fun of the idea that dealers are just giving away free samplers.

It costs moolah and some will turn to stealing or whoring to get the dough.

That's why governments should handle the distribution of narcotics, to protect society from crime.

Either way, heroin will destroy your health and if you don't quit the crap you will die.

Actually, there are a lot of functional heroin users in society, at all levels. You just don't hear the 'success' stories.

I'm sure they'll be lining up.

We have methadone clinics to get smack users to wean off the crap, and heroin is very dangerous highly-addictive CRAP. Heroin addicts have a rotten quality of life no matter what because sooner or later, you either get off the crap for good or it will kill you. It's one of the worst drugs ever invented.

"The initiative could benefit up to 400 drug addicts"

Um, I'm no expert on this problem, but... I gotta throw this out there - wouldn't it be far better and cheaper to just put these heroin addicts in secure facilities for several months and force them to go cold turkey to get them off their addiction? Yeah, I know the first few days or weeks would be... difficult... but once they're free of the addiction, they could return to productive lives and start paying paying taxes instead of using tax money forever. No good?

@starpunk Let's hope heroin and all other drug addictions will be eradicated ASAP.

Are you referring to tobacco? Tobacco is dangerous, highly addictive and eventually will kill you. Smack is even more addictive, even more destructive and it kills much faster. Ever hear of junkies reaching the age of 80? Either they quit or they die, period.

Exactly - or they could be paying taxes while getting treatment. Either way, heroin is such a rotten drug. I've never tried it but I've seen what it does to people and it's destructive. Either the user gets off of it or the user dies. Simple. Smack is nothing but bad news, one way or another. It's CRAP.

Reminds me of the joke about the drug addict who finds a business card with the words, "Do you have a drug addiction problem? Call this number: xxx-xxx-xxxx." The addict calls and the number turns out to be a pharmaceutical manufacturer.

Jokes aside, so here we have a government agency providing "free heroin treatments to provide a better quality of life for the addict."

When the addict gets addicted to the "heroin treatment", it won't be long before the government starts charging for these "treatments". Only this time the government clinic gets the revenue instead of the drug dealer.

Can't wait for the US government, especially California state government, to cash in on the "heroin clinic treatment" racket. They already legalized and taxed Marijuana; why not become a drug pusher using a "treatment clinic" as a front to bring in money?
