The U.S. National Security Agency says the same Russian military hacking group that interfered in the 2016 presidential election and unleashed a devastating malware attack the following year has been exploiting a major email server program since last August or earlier.

I wonder whether Trump and his supporters will once again say no problem - as long as the Russians continue to help Trump and his contemporary Republican ilk.

Traditional Republicans who identified as conservatives would be appalled that a foreign state would be allowed and even encouraged to meddle in the US's sovereign affairs. Traditional conservatives valued the country's sovereignty. Which Trump and his followers care jack about.

Why wouldn't they? There was basically no impact for messing around with the election last time, and Trump has all but given them the green light, as long as it benefits him personally. [When Trump publicly sided with Putin over his own intelligence agencies at Helsinki, that's when you could know that things could get really bad.] Buckle up, folks.

Amazing. The Russians are still hacking elections. And the Democrats STILL haven't provided ANY proof for their CLAIM of collusion between the Russians and Trump.

Amazing, the Russians are still hacking our elections. And after three years, Trump still fawns all over Putin, saying he believes him rather than his own Intel Agencies, praising him at Summits, patting him on the back and sharing "bro" stories...

When will Trump put a finger in Putin's chest and say; don't interfere in our elections...or else...

Doubt that will happen - Puppets don't do that to their Masters...

Fake news right there. How about a fact check, Jack Dorsey?

I do wish Americans would make up their mind. Who do you guys want to nuke first? Russia, China or a red state? So many enemies to choose from - a land of abundance. All out to get you, it seems.

OK, how about the Repub led Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, led by Repub Senator Richard Burr....

FINDINGS 1. (U), The Committee found, that the IRA sought to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election by harming Hillary Clinton's chances of success and supporting Donald Trump at the direction of the Kremlin. (U) The Committee found that the IRA' s :lnformation warfare campaign was broad in scope and entailed objectives beyond the result of the 2016 presidential election. Further, the Committee's analysis of the IRA's activities on social media supports the key judgments of the January 6, 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment, "Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections," that "Russia's, goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton,· and harm her electability and potential presidency."5 However, where the Intelligence Community assessed that the Russian government "aspired to help President-elect Trump's election chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him," the Committee found that IRA social media activity was overtly and almost invariably supportive of then-candidate Trump, and to the detriment .of Secretary Clinton's campaign.

May we have your apology now?

I just want to state on the record, America has never, never ever hacked any other country.

Who do you guys want to nuke first?

You guys? Are you now claiming you're not an American.

And why nuke? Who's said anything about that.

Enemies? States that want to interfere in other state's affairs have long been called that.

Trump and his followers should be among the last people calling out enemies when they do that on a daily basis. Typical despot tactic.

@willibFake news right there. How about a fact check, Jack Dorsey?

Do you have inside info saying it was a different Russian hacking group?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

And why nuke? Who's said anything about that.

Nobody ever says anything about starting wars, but they start anyway as a result of words and actions.

Enemies? States that want to interfere in other state's affairs have long been called that.

Well then, I guess the USA is the enemy of the entire world. Nobody interferes in other countries affairs more than the USA. Nobody comes even close.

I've never said nor thought otherwise. But that US wrong doesn't make 'little old Russia's' wrongs right. Nor China's. Nor Israel's.

I believe in national sovereignty, which is one of many reasons I oppose the global alt right's 'meddling' in other state's affairs. And why I oppose little old Russia's Eurasian Economic Union, and China's Belt and Road.

@willibFake news right there

What do your kook news sites say? Could you list some of them?

No worries, the biggest secret is.............................

NSA? The same wonderful organisation that collects megadata on its own citizens, hacks almost every network in the world and eavesdropped even Merkel, America's closest ally? Rrrright, sure I believe them, these stand-up guys never lie.

Ptownsend:

Do you have inside info saying it was a different Russian hacking group?

There was no "Russian hacking group interfering in the election". If you still believe this hoax, tell us the name of the "Russian hacking group" and what their "interference" was supposed to be.

Come on, stop the nonsense....

The entire Repub-led report by Repub Senator Ricard Barr is quoted above with a link to the Senate website. There are four volumes for your reading pleasure - unless you don't want to read your own Repub report...

Read it and educate yourself so you won't look like such a fool...and we'll be waiting for your apology for calling it "fake news"...

The NSA really does not appreciate the Russians muscling in on their election hacking racket. There are two kinds of mafia in the world; official claiming a legal basis, and unofficial which is deemed illegal.

But we can expect our press to just keep harping on anyone but the corrupt rogue NSA.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

The US NSA hacks, and so does Russia GRU

It'd be ridiculous to believe neither are hacking - they're both top spy institutions

I don't see the problem here.

Remember, the current president ASKED Russia to hack American emails. A direct request, on national TV, during the debates.

They're just obliging. What's the problem?

Exim isn't THAT popular for Unix systems. I've been running corporate email systems for 25 yrs. Never touched exim. Sendmail is what the big guys use and postfix is what 80% of everyone else uses.

Gmail does their own thing. They wrote their own SMTP program to ensure privacy violates were possible ASAP.

Only idiots would put MS-Exchange directly on the internet. There would be a postfix (or sendmail) email-gateway on the internet that filters all the in/out SMTP traffic.

Email is a few different protocols.

SMTP - used for server-to-server xfers and for a client to SEND.

POP3/s and IMAP/s - used for clients to RECEIVE email.

Client machines, like MS-Outlook or Thunderbird or K-9 Mail use both SMTPS and IMAPS to send and receive emails over encrypted connections.

Exim is only for SMTP/S traffic, not for POP3/s or IMAP/s traffic at all. Exim was patched last fall, so being hacked this week by that bug isn't Exim's fault, it is the admin's for not running 2 commands which would patch the entire system. Literally, 2 commands.

Anyone running an email system on the internet who doesn't patch at least weekly is a fool. A FOOL.

In the last few months, I've seen a huge increase in email hacking attempts. This week, most have come from 27.255.64.0 - 27.255.95.255 and 89.111.128.0 - 89.111.135.255 networks. That's Korea and Russia. Both with well over 100K attacks each.

It isn't an accident. It is deliberate. Accidents do happen with 1-20 incorrect attempts. We see a bunch of those too, from all around the world.

Nobody gets a VPN into Russia to perform attacks, but Russians almost always use VPNs to get IPs outside Russia. The attacks from Korea look exactly the same as the attacks from the Russian IPs.
