This is one politician that really deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

Exactly.

Hmmmm.  Like New Zealand (pop. 4.8 m, large media companies ), importance to large media companies )), is going to move the dial on this one.

I do support the efforts to target and root out violent extremism, especially in light of the recent atrocity in NZ. Monitoring on line content to identify truly potentially violent actors is acceptable and necessary.

But how broad will the definition of 'extremism' extend? In light of recent efforts to silence, limit, demonetize, etc conservative on line content, I worry that Ms Ardern and big tech will go overboard to censorship of ideas they don't like.

So trying to stop online extremist abuse of the Internet suddenly creeps into being a cencership of political opponents? Really! It's NZ not Russia or China. New Zealanders will have no part of political cencership but do support a block on live streaming massacre. To try to fausly say its a political move is strait out of trumps play book and as such to be completely ignored.

This is disinformation.

But who will watch the 17 watchers? Is there a popup or email that poster will receive that allows them to appeal to independent arbitrator (cost free)?

Agreed. NZ is good at allowing free speech of all sorts and should of course monitor the Internet for clues to head off violent terrorism.

All politicians, left, right and middle would like to silence the opposition and limit the dissemination of thier messages. National emergencies, security threats and terrorism counter measures are easily piggy backed on as excuses to limit free speech, spy on the public, etc. This is nothing new.

Considering that in recent years big tech has brazenly censored conservative voices I think it's reasonable to be concerned that Ms Adern's and big tech's definition of 'questionable content' will extent beyond real violent terrorists to those whose ideas are simply politically disagreeable, or considered 'offensive', 'likely to incite violence', etc.. No one should be the least surprised.

protecting New Zealanders from objectionable content,” Ardern said in the statement.

Electrons. Information. Video. Ideas. Messages.

Do they draw blood? Can you pick one up and kill someone with them? No. Should we fear them? Sometimes. But not to the degree we make stupid and dangerous real life action to try and destroy what cannot really be destroyed. No. We should fight fire with fire. And if we are too lazy to do that, then we have already lost.

Every power the government gets is a double-edged sword. But its not a balanced one...the negative side will eventually outweigh the positive. And this is simply because governments are comprised of people, and the most greedy and lusting of power among us always gravitate toward government....and they will always abuse the powers they get.

Forgive me for being naive, but I am impressed with the reasonable and moderate tone both sides are showing here. Not sure the cause, but really well done all
