Just a sad, sad crazy crime!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

It seems that a crime (mass shootings) once associated solely with Caucasian males in the US has become popular with young Asian males too. Isn't this similar to the Virginia Tech incident?

Is this becoming a trend amongst certain males simply because of things like video games and violence on TV?

Are the parents to blame for not paying enough attention to their child's development or people not having access to support groups because US society is creating a greater divide between haves and have nots? (Screw you, I got mine mentally)

Or are some groups of kids being too spoiled which has made them mentally weak youth or adults when reality doesn't fit in with what they were told was the truth?

What about the relative ease in acquiring a gun? It seems it isn't so much the criminals we really need to look out for but the large majority of "unstable Real Americans".

Koreans don't like to be teased! The expelled him for anger issues. Oh really? He had anger issues? No way!

Personally I mostly associate it with the dangerous combination of guns and crazy people.

Aw, ickle diddums. What a big baby.

2 Asian males does not make a trend. Wake up.

@MustardKing

Who said trend? Don't put words in my mouth! Wake up yourself.

anger management issues

That's one way to put it.

Here in America we promote full assimilation! Melting-pot!

Who said trend?

If something is popular with a group, such as "young Asian males" (your words) you are claiming that it might not be a trend? Good luck with that.

@Mustard King

You are right two does not make trend. So.......

On April 3 of 2009, Jiverly Antares Wong (evidently Chinese) killed fourteen people, including himself at a Binghamton New York immigration center. Just days later, 69 year old John Suchan Chong (sounds Chinese) attacked KoreanAm campers at the Kkottongnae Retreat Camp in Temecula about 85 miles from Los Angeles. He killed one woman before being bludgeoned himself by other campers. The once beloved handyman pled not guilty, explaining “he was unhappy with the other volunteers because he felt they treated him disrespectfully and did not do their fair share of work.” At least he doesn’t hate babies.

By comparison, Major Nidal Malik Hasan (technically of “Western Asian” descent) killed 13 at Fort Hood which everybody EXCEPT the Obama administration from the FBI to the Pentagon called the deadliest terrorist attack since 9/11. I suspect both Fort Hood and the Mumbai massacres were inspired as much by Cho in its methods as by radical Islam in motive.

Other Koreans who made the news was James Jay Lee who used pistols and an explosive device to take hostage at the Discovery Channel headquarters

Now the federally funded National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (Start) at the University of Maryland has declared that the Discovery attack qualifies as terrorist act, and is the first case they’ve seen of what looks like an environmentally inspired suicide bomber in the world. Including Lee, that’s four Angry Asian Men right killing nearly 50 people in 3 years. That far exceeds the total of 13 at Fort Hood and 2 at the Little Rock recruiting station that have been even claimed by the radical Jihad.

Suspect One L. Goh mentioned to police is that he was upset over being asked to leave several months ago and hated students who taunted him for his terrible English. That’s pretty much the same story Seung-Hui Cho whose only complaints seemed to be to get back at those who made him an outcast. Still, Goh, Cho and Jame Jay Lee were all from Virginia.

How was that MustardKing? You want to give it a go now? ;)

How was that MustardKing?

Much, much better. I still think its too early to use words like "popular" and "trend", but I will be with you if we have similar incidents in the next few years.

But still, thank you for laying down some facts to show your opinion was founded on something. Its too rare here.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Silvafan: Stop trying to bring race/background into this. If we were to take your cue and start listing all crimes committed by Caucasians it would take months and pages to write out. Also, you say you didn't talk about 'trends', but then you post a bunch of incidents of Asians killing others? Which is it? No doubt next week's shooting will be committed by someone of a different ethnicity.

This is a tragedy, and that's all. The man was caught, alive, and I've no doubt he regrets his actions, and I've also no doubt that he will face the full wrath of the law, as he deserves. It seems pretty clear he planned something of this nature, which will weigh even more heavily against him.

Goh was a 43-year-old Korean immigrant, so I don't think we can blame this attack on American culture or video games. More likely, he couldn't handle being teased by a bunch of young women (a generation younger than himself), so it may have been some stupid "face" thing.

And I agree, keep race out of it. Four or five incidents involving Asian males (one who was an al Qaeda agent) doesn't change the FBI statistics that show Asians are the least violent of the ethnic groups in the United States, including caucasians.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Bebert61: Agreed. People who bring video games into the argument are the same people who blamed TV for everything when it came out, and the people who blamed the ball-point pen before that. People will ALWAYS look for ways to misdirect and justify the unjustifiable. If video games were TRULY to blame for the violence in the world Japan would be the most violent nation on the planet (until a few years ago they produced nearly all the violent video games, and otherwise).

I also agree this was just a case of a person snapping, as we see all the time here and elsewhere. Unfortunately, he had access to weapons that allowed him to maximize the carnage. I'm just surprised he didn't off himself in the end, but I guess that's good because now he will be punished.

That is a good point. Have you ever seen those news clips of fights that break out in the Korean legislative assembly? It seems that those politicans get pretty heated up and sometimes take to fistacufs.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

FBI statistics that show Asians are the least violent of the ethnic groups in the United States, including caucasians.

The reason for that may be that they are such a smaller percentage of hte US population. I guess the FBI has not seen the pressure cooker explosions that seem to be shown here on JT sometimes.

I think this guy grew up in a Korean generation that pretty much was "macho-sentric" and as some have posted, being teased by women may have set him off. He may not have had the social skills of interacting with others to effectively diffuse his anger. I would like to know the gender of his victims. The article goes into detail about his family life, but doesn't mention if he had a wife and kids. If his victims were all female, then he probably couldn't relate to females in America vice Korea in terms of attitude.

Alphaape: "The reason for that may be that they are such a smaller percentage of hte US population. I guess the FBI has not seen the pressure cooker explosions that seem to be shown here on JT sometimes."

Are you referring to cases in Japan? If so, how does that relate to crimes in the US? Actually, how is it relative at all?

"I think this guy grew up in a Korean generation that pretty much was "macho-sentric" and as some have posted, being teased by women may have set him off. He may not have had the social skills of interacting with others to effectively diffuse his anger."

Maybe it was being belittled by young women that set him off, maybe not. It was clearly belittling, either way. I'm not sure why people are trying to reduce this crime to ethnic background and/or gender.

"If his victims were all female, then he probably couldn't relate to females in America vice Korea in terms of attitude."

See my point?

...was founded to help Korean immigrants adjust to a new country and find careers in nursing and ministry.

How ironic. From now on, part of the "adjustment" to a new country will be having to walk through metal detectors to get to class.

@SmithinJapan

People who bring video games into the argument are the same people who blamed TV for everything when it came out, and the people who blamed the ball-point pen before that.

I'm not blaming TV but I do believe TV and videos games can desensitize people to acts that would have in the past been considered more horrific. For example, butchers could easily do to dead people what they normally do to other kinds of animals in their shops. Especially if they have no connection to that person. That is how TV and video games can affect generation of folks already socially awkward and have little guidance.

Are their other variables at play? yes, course.

Are their a lot similarities between the examples I listed? Most definitely. All Asian, All were teased, At least 3 were from Virginia, All within the last 3 years, total of 50 people dead because the examples I provided.

I'm not saying profile and stereotype all Asians like racists do but there is a correlation with these examples that do identify a recent trend. (MustardKings words)

The history of mass shootings in the US is not complicated. It's membership of perpetrators are a finite group.

Whether it is a short or long term trend it is there and should be used like others as tools to identify and hopefully solve any problematic trends. Definitely, not to be used as a reason to discriminate against one group.

If this was a conversation about suicides in Japan then it would probably seem like it makes more sense to a lot more people on here.

@Bebert61

That is what makes the connection so easily identifiable.

this kind of thing is unfortunately not very surprising..

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@smithinjapan: Reading today from MSNBC on One Goh,

"One Goh, the former student accused of shooting dead seven people at a small Christian college in Oakland, Calif., was consumed by an inability to get along with women, according to a report." and "Delariman described Goh as a good and eager student, but added, "He just can't deal with women. ... "

6 of the 7 victims were women. The only male killed was the man whom he hijacked a car from. People described him as being a bit aloof with anger issues.

So he did have some sort of agenda. He was looking for one particular woman there but was told that she wasn't there so he went on his spree.

Knowing how the US press operates, this will become a focal point issue when the "Prevention of violence against women" month campaign starts. Not trying to be funny, but that is how these things normally turn out, with a mandatory training lecture on violence against women or any other group that a tragedy like this happens to.

Violent crime statistics have shown massive drops over the last 15 years. One could actually make the case that the opposite is true...the more violent movies and games, the less violent the generation.

You mean the purpose of the school is this? "We are the Americans. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Victims were mostly women in their 20's and 30's, including the ones who were shot but survived. I sort of figured as much. None of the victims had personally teased him, so they were victims of his deranged mental baggage. It sort of reminds me of several incidents in China where an individual male would go into a schoolyard or playground and start stabbing as many children as possible. I'm sure the FBI does have a profile for this sort of person.

California has the death penalty, but they seldom enforce the death sentences. The FBI profilers will have many years to pick at this guy's brain and refine the profile, the way they have done with convicted serial killers.

As for One L. Goh, if he couldn't handle being teased in a class room by a bunch of girls and women, he is in for a rude shock when he enters the racially charged, dog-eat-dog world of the California penal system.

So you're not blaming TV, but you're blaming TV. Glad we're clear. Like I said, your grandparents probably blamed the ball-point pen for the ruin of society, and at some point before that someone blamed electricity -- everyone blames something other than the real reasons.

Alphaape: "6 of the 7 victims were women. The only male killed was the man whom he hijacked a car from. People described him as being a bit aloof with anger issues."

So maybe it was gender related and he was angry at women. Just out of curiousity, what is the ratio of male:female students at this nursing school, since you're all into stats?

Once I again, I didn't say it was the whole reason why these things happen but it does contribute to it. For some reason you can't seem to get your head around that so you keep repeating it over and over again with nothing new to add. Is this personal for you or I am hitting to close to home for you? Here is some research on the subject to show I'm not pulling this out of the sky with SOURCES.

(2003) Recent research has shown that connections between children playing violent video games can cause later aggressive behavioral problems. In retrospect studies have also shown a twelve percent increase in aggressive behavior after watching violent television as well. Some parents and psychologists have said that there are children who benefit from the proficiency and coordination of playing video games while others disagree. Critics of video games claim that watching violent television is less detrimental due to the children not physically playing out the violence. Research has also shown heavy viewers, which is four or more hours a day, put in less effort at school, have poorer reading skills, play less friendly with friends, have fewer hobbies and activities, and are more likely to be overweight. The American Psychological Association says there are three major effects of watching violence in the media (i.e.: video games/television) children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, children may be more fearful of the world around them, and children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or hurtful ways toward others.

SmithinJapan: You have something a little more credible to offer than just common sense on this one? Or do you believe the researchers got it wrong and you know better on this?

I know you are an intelligent guy but you are barking up the wrong tree on this one my friend!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So maybe it was gender related and he was angry at women. Just out of curiousity, what is the ratio of male:female students at this nursing school, since you're all into stats?

@smithinjapan: Don't know the make-up of the student body as far as percentages of males/females, only from what I read about it being a small school with about 100 students. But you seem to be a smart guy you should be able to figure it out. Just because someone actually thought this out on the possibility of a motive and your attempts to disprove their theory turned out to be wrong, no need to get sore.

A tragedy occured, and no need for you to try to "be right" on this one. The bottom line is that a guy was a bit nuts, but able to function somewhat in society, but still went off and killed 7 people for nothing. He wasn't a product of the "American TV violence" and "shoot them up attitude" brainwashing that many like to place on Americans, since he was a relative recent immigrant to the US (hence he still had problems speaking English), and whatever it was in Korea that affected his mental condition led to this point.

Just my curiosity, does Korea have the same stigma of mental illness that can be seen sometimes in Japan? I think that should be something the profilers look at for future reference.
