While i applaud the decission it also is just stupid. The bill closes off as much area to drilling as it opens. If not more. Politics at its worst.

I'm happy to go on record as saying I oppose this, as I always have.
2 points:
using U.S. oil is better than shipping in Saudi oil. this plan is 1 oil smeared Miami beach away from major homegrown opposition.RomeoRamenII
Drilling off shore to supply our addiction to oil will create jobs and make our economy more sound.
A BIG plus is that we would not be sending as much money over to the Middle East oil cartel that does not like us very much and more of that money will be kept at home.
Obama might have finally gotten one right by adopting Mr. McCain's "Drill Baby, Drill" approach.

Funny how ALL of obama's good ideas are republican ones.

"Funny how ALL of obama's good ideas are republican ones"
According to those in Team Tantrum, when not sucking the flesh from living babies fingers, democrats just steal good republican ideas. It's fun to watch.

"Obama's ( drilling ) plan is narrower than Bush's"
That's to be expected. He's a liberal Democrat. He's also going to require car makers to make cars that get better mileage. How about letting consumers decide what they want to buy? Nah...
Sarge
I think Obama's 747 should be required to get better fuel economy, or he should downsize like he's forcing everyone else to.

First smart centrist domestic policy decision made by this administration. Doesn't go far enough but I think this is more of a first opening bid. I have a feeling ANWAR is on the plate in the background later when he tries to get garner enough bi-partisan support to push and get his cap and trade plan out.
Cap and Trade is a job killer and I think this Administration knows that but opening up domestic drilling and tapping our domestic supplies is a job creator and a high paying one at that and the administration desperately needs that right now as do the American people.
One advantage that a Liberal Democratic President has over a Republican one is the hue and cry about him being in the pocket of big-oil or a shill for Halliburton won't hold water and he'll get broad support from the moderate side of his party and the Republican and independent side as well for this if in fact he is serious about increasing domestic production. I think he might be he did allow the first nuclear power plants to be built in over thirty years though which only a Liberal Democrat really could do without kicking up a huge fuss with the exception of the far left wing of his party.
It will be interesting to see if he really does open up the drilling and exploration first before he tries to push through cap and trade.

It's even funnier that with a decade of control, team temper tantrum couldn't do any of them and it falls on Pres. Obama to take action.
I think that's one of the reasons Democrats are so inefficient. They have to actually do the work team temper tantrum said they would and their own work on top of it.

Very disappointing. Obama is now opting for the easy way. And instead of conserving energy and exploring and developing clean energy sources he has caved in to pressure of interest groups who go for the easy buck.
Bad publicity - poor judgment. Where does the biomass fuel come from? Not by any chance from food crops that could feed the millions and millions of people starving?
Taka313
Actually, ownership of the idea gets transferred to the person who actually enacts it so in this case, team temper tantrum's input would be zero, which is actually an improvement.

Oh, wait a moment. It's all an April Fools' Day joke.

Since when was "NO" whilst crying and holding your breath ever considered an idea (I'm sorry but that quote was just TOO mockable)?

Actually, maybe off-shore oil wasn't what he was talking about when michael steele was talking about drilling at that S&M club.

The government is run on interest groups whether its the UAW or the NRA (national rifle association or alternatively the national restaurant association, your pick). Anyway drilling is a sound plan considering we won't be getting off oil anytime soon, the process will be slow and expensive. Because while the new technologies coming out may be environmentally friendly they aren't always cost effective. Plus, thus far I have been unable to fuel my car on smiles and I have no intention of wasting money on an electric or hybrid car, the amount of gas they save by no means offsets how expensive they are.
Yeah, Google got me good this morning.

Hey, wait just a sec here - weren't all you screaming liberals like Taka vehemently opposed to drilling when it was proposed by the Republicans?? Now it okay and necessary. I'd rather be in team temper tantrum than team don't have a clue wtf we're doing.
Madverts
Tiger,
The extreme left whine, they don't scream. That's the red-eyed right wing's perogative. Obama simply has the radical left eating out of his hand whilst simaltaneously pursing policies similar to the Bush admin, simlply because he's Obama.
hworta269
Actually if you read the news of this actual event and not a paraphrased story comrad Obama said that he would let them study the areas listed and open them up for exploration. The areas though listed arent known to have any massive reserves the areas that do have oil are still off limits.
