Obama pushes Congress on paycheck fairness for women

Yesterday afternoon, the Senate voted along straight party lines to prevent the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 3220) from receiving an up-or-down vote. Even with support by a majority of senators, this important fair pay legislation was blocked by "procedural rules" and partisan deadlock. This will be tried again.

Oh, was our idiot President saying something? Must not have been that important. But then, since almost everything out of his mouth is foolishness or partisan, paying attention to the man has become much, much less important.

The Republicans are clearly pursuing a scorched earth policy in which all American business will remain on hold. Call it the "Blazing Saddles" strategy: the GOP has the gun held firmly to their (and our) head, and they apparently are crazy enough to use it.

In other news, most women are smart enough not to take jobs that risk their lives and health just to get more pay! Also, more women are more likely to take a lower paying job for stability while a man would hold out for more. And women are more loyal and less likely to quit one job just to get a better paying one.

Sorry, but more pay is not necessary complimentary toward men, any more than the rich got there because they were saints. The only answers that will fix it amount to socialism. Not that I think bad of socialism but Americans probably won't accept it.

Can't speak for the others but I'd like to point out, again, that the 77 cent number is an average and not a job-by-job comparison. The fact is that women tend to enter fields that don't bring in salaries as high as what are considered male dominated fields. Women are more likely to enter into health and social services while men are still more likley to enter into engineering or business positions that earn more money.

If this is a priority problem than it must be addressed on a societal level. It is already illegal to discriminate based on sex but all the laws in the world cannot alter what profession a rational adult chooses to train for and work in. Women currently occupy different fields of employment than men, if they want to earn more they would have to enter these fields but as it stands they do not so their average wage is lower.

The White House, pointing to data that shows American women making 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, says that closing that gap is a necessity - not a luxury - and hopes to cement female support for Obama by amplifying that message.

This doesn't applied to some unions. Workers get paid the same regardless of gender. The workload is different.

Some businesses they have pay scale for their workers.

“This is more than just about fairness,” he told a conference call to urge the Senate to back the Paycheck Fairness Act. “Women are the breadwinners for a lot of families and if they’re making less than men do for the same work, families are going to have to get by for less money.”

Which jobs are those? There is never such a thing as "Fairness." People are suppose to negotiate their wages. From working in retail, you can negotiate a higher wage than what the company offers if you have experiences. Wages should be base on merits not on an Obama's Paycheck Fairness Act. That will undermined companies from hiring qualified people in the long run.

The workplace is full of unfairness. That's a fact. Where can one start...

On the other hand, the Tipping Policy should be done away and have restaurants and other businessess pay their workers a decent wage. The services are getting so bad the point of tipping have lost its meaning.

Obama policy is not helping businessess grow and employ people at all. This is to get the women votes.

I've no particular view on this bill itself, but the status is clear: it may as well have been a "sense of the Senate" bill urging children to be kind to their mothers and the Republicans would not let it out of committee - not if there were some chance that it would cast any positive reflection on Obama (and Tatanka, Obama did not introduce this bill: he is the president, which is part of the executive branch, which does not write legislation.) Oh - and to people like RR, who claim the Democrats "controlled" both houses of Congress between '08 and '10: this is a typical example of Democratic "control" with Republican veto power.

Boehner's threat to drag the government to the edge of default next February when the debt ceiling will have to be raised again is a case in point; there was not even any reason to bring it up now except to send shivers down the spines of businessmen.

In Japan, in some indutries, men are made to work like chess pieces, whereas woman are not allowed to be on the board at all. I can't imagine the US companies being like that, so I guess the situation is pretty much as TheQuestion wrote except for the positive light stuff.

The wage gap has more to do with how the gender's choose professions. It's fairly rare that women actually recieve a lower hourly rate than men with comperable experience, otherwise it would open them up to litigation, however women do tend tend to make decisions that result in lower yearly pay. Women are more likely to work part time than men, women are more likely to work in public service, women are less likley to enter into engineering or scientific professions. Women and men also prioritize their professions differently. Women, on average, prefer more flexible scheduling, social interraction, the ability to segregate work from their personal lives, and general human development. Men tend to focus on salary and advancement opportunity at the expense of other professional qualitites. For example women are less likely to take overtime work and are far less likely to work in areas exposed to the elements or to hazarous environments that tend to boost the annual earnings of unskilled male workers.

However there are a number of positives. In a CONSAD report they found that women tend to recover their salaries at a more rapid rate than men after taking an extended lapse in employment and are more likely to have college degrees on average.

These factors are primarily societal in nature. Although, having said that, women tend to enjoy their jobs more than their male counterparts and are more likely to view their quality of life in a more positive light.
