Hat in hand? He was happy to fill it by donating a million dollars to Obama's super-pac. Pretty sure he wants his check back though after that first debate.

I think Jon Stewart might wait until after the election - even Obama admits he lost that debate, but he's still in the race. Romney's a millionaire but if any of his donors want their cheques back if he loses, he might not be one for very much longer.

Very good point there, Hayden Wellstone.

Let us also not forget that Maher invites guests on his show, including notable conservatives such as Grover Nordquist, Darrell Issa, Ann Coulter, and a host of others. in fact, it is a rare show that doesn't have at least one conservative on the panel of three. By contrast, Limbaugh can't afford to have anyone sharing the microphone with him. Alternative voices are carefully screened out.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Yabits,

Please do not let us make one very clear distinction between Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher and it has nothing to do with politics.

Rush Limbaugh is able to air his radio show across America where advertising pays for operating costs. Bill Maher, on the other hand, is on HBO. To watch his show, you have to make a conscience decision to pay to watch him and watch him espouse his views.

BIG DIFFERENCE. One pollutes the airwaves for free. The other must be ordered and paid for by the customer to view. Just another case of republican double standards and false equivalencies.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

This makes absolutely no sense at all.

Don't tell me; you're drunk. ;-)

It was SO there.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It's like a drunk complaining that every conversation he has, people complain about his drinking.

This makes absolutely no sense at all.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I give you the best paragraph ever put on the internet:

Basic logic instead dictates that they the intended target of these slurs and attacks and as such are well within their rights as human beings to be offended by those that just oh so casually dish out this type of demeaning stereotyping and rhetoric.

Casually dish out. Such as, "VICTIM CARD" per say?

It's like a drunk complaining that every conversation he has, people complain about his drinking. He looks at it like this. "I've got to meet all new people. These people are rude and mean and sometimes don't even capitalize my name, etc." That's how it almost always goes. They never take the responsibility for quitting drinking, just point out that you're still whining about it.

That's you and the victim card.

Hat in hand? He was happy to fill it by donating a million dollars to Obama's super-pac.

Again, you dishonestly try to deflect. The point was made that a number of Republicans had to seek Limbaugh's forgiveness for stepping afoul of the rules he has set out. This is a vast difference between Limbaugh and Maher.

"Following statements made to Politico yesterday telling Rush Limbaugh to "back off," Republican congressman Phil Gingrey now has his tail between his legs. In a groveling call to Limbaugh's conservative radio program this afternoon, Gingrey offered a humble apology and described Limbaugh as a "conservative giant" who plays an integral role in maintaining the ever-decreasing Republican base." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/28/phil-gingrey-gop-congress_n_161964.html

Now, which Democratic member of Congress has ever gone groveling to Bill Maher? (Short answer: None.)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"make sure there will be no cheaters on election day"

Romney should have used George W. Bush's 2000 election debate closing comments:

"For those of you for me, thanks for your help. For those of you for my opponent, please only vote once."

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

No Democrat has ever had to go hat in hand and kowtow to Bill Maher if they've run afoul of him, the way many Republicans have done with Limbaugh.

Hat in hand? He was happy to fill it by donating a million dollars to Obama's super-pac. Pretty sure he wants his check back though after that first debate.

And I never see any articles about how Democrat Congressmen have to pay homage to Jon Stewart or avoid saying anything he might not like.

From just two weeks ago:

Barack Obama made his sixth appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" on Thursday

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

As usual, the unemployment numbers released were the seasonally adjusted U3 which doesn't show the whole picture. The U6 number adds the missing part. The total shows the more accurate picture - bleak.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Over 780 election observers from the US Justice Department are on the way to 28 states to make sure there will be no cheaters on the election day. Most of them are lawyers. American politics are in mess.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Unemployment data is improving per data released today

My apology to misquote above.

It should be read that Non farm payrolls in October rose 171,000 as the unemployment rate ticked slightly higher to 7.9%, from the prior month's 7.8%. It does not help Obama, but it does not hurt Obama at this moment. Most Ohio voters have alredy voted, so based on polls today, Obama will carry Ohio.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Actually, I'm rather glad to hear that you don't pay a whole lot of attention to folks like Chris Matthews or any Democrat Congressman that he has on his MSNBC show from time to time.

I don't actually know who Chris Matthews is, but I certainly do know who Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter are. I take this as an indication that right-wing loudmouths have somewhat more media exposure than their left-wing counterparts. And I never see any articles about how Democrat Congressmen have to pay homage to Jon Stewart or avoid saying anything he might not like. Right-wing nutjobs just have a higher profile, it seems to me.

Anyway, good news about the employment figures, and I note The Economist is begrudgingly supporting Obama: http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21565623-america-could-do-better-barack-obama-sadly-mitt-romney-does-not-fit-bill-which-one .

Technically, every word of this is true. Obama did force GM and Chrysler through a managed bankruptcy. Fiat did end up buying Chrysler. And Chrysler is thinking about building Jeeps in China. But remember my three-part test to judge how deceptive a statement is?

Laughable. Hiding behind "technically". An honest person can view the ad and knows whether it is deceptive or not. It's easy to say either it is or it isn't.

It is not a deception. Job will stay in Toledo. CEO of Chrysler felt that he had a moral obligation to tell the truth. Here it is. Romney has nothing to wrap up with-no closing position 4 days prior to the election.

Unemployment data is improving per data released today. Manufacturing data released today is up. Durable good order is up. Housing price is up while foreclosure is down. Consumer spending is up. US economy is doing okay.

Four more years of GOP obstructionism.

That's not going to bode well for 2016 GOP cannon fodder candidate Rick Santorum.

Rush is nothing more than an older version of Bill Maher. Both are crass, rude and both appeal to nothing more than a niche audience

Waaaay wrong. No Democrat has ever had to go hat in hand and kowtow to Bill Maher if they've run afoul of him, the way many Republicans have done with Limbaugh. The main reason being is that Maher's "niche" audience understands satire and that Maher doesn't take himself too seriously, whereas so many dittoheads take the distortions and bloviations of Limbaugh as Gospel Truth.

Rush also holds no real sway with Republicans in general or he would have been successful in stopping Romney.

Limbaugh never put his direct support behind any particular candidate. Had he done so, and his support included giving Romney the same treatment as any of his other prime targets, things may have turned out differently. He knows, however, that doing so would have run him afoul of some very key Republican power-brokers who favored Romney, like Karl Rove. Limbaugh is not the head capo, but he's definitely at the table with the other GOP movers and shakers. Another point that differentiates him from Maher.

As far as this goes, even that most Liberal of Magazines Mother Jones admits Romney's right.

Mother Jones does not "admit" that Romney's statement about Chrysler moving all Jeep production to China is right. The statement you made is deceptive and dishonest.

Bush!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Don't worry - Herve - It's not likely the congressional GOP will soon drop obstructionism and compromise for the good of the American people. Much of it is habitual, sort of like trying to get Hancock to say, "Good job."

They will eventually get over it; they will have to. Obama will have every single ball in his court, and continued obstructionism will lead to their extinction by 2014.

Still, until then, he (and all Americans) will be able to continue blaming them. Improvement despite their obstructionism will prove their undoing.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Former Pennsyvania Governor and former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge is predicting a Romney win in Pennsylvania. He must be looney tunes or something...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

If Obama "wins", who's he going to blame for the previous four years? Blaming everyone and anyone hasn't improved things.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Technically, every word of this is true. Obama did force GM and Chrysler through a managed bankruptcy. Fiat did end up buying Chrysler. And Chrysler is thinking about building Jeeps in China.

Memory is quite selective. Bankruptcy was inevitable for both companies; the question was how. Romney now seems to favor the private sector - but do you remember those days in early 2008? Do you really remember those days, when the financial sector was completely locked down, and the question was not if but how many big names on Wall Street were going down? This was, to say the least, not good timing to formulate a private sector bailout of the auto industry. It WOULD have failed; it WOULD have failed badly; but some would have made a very, very large profit off of that failure. So there you have that; there really is little debate, economically speaking.

Yes, Fiat did buy Chrysler. You might remember that Lee Iaccoca went hat-in-hand to Congress in the late '70s for bailout money; he succeeded in turning the company around but criticizes Obama for providing exactly what he had begged for. Romney seems to imply that Obama sold off an American company to foreigners; in reality, Chrysler was bought by a German company, Daimler-Benz, in 1987; it later was bought by Cerberus Capital Management in 2007. One might think its sale to another automobile manufacturer, rather than a "capital management" agency, might make great sense, but at any rate, Chrysler has not really been "American-owned" for 15 years.

And, yes, Chrysler has decided to expand production into the Chinese market - and, if you understand English, you would notice that the words "expand" and "substitute" are quite different. Romney knows this quite well. He smiles when he lies. I don't know how he feels about it at night, but wow, what a lie.

It is one of a string of incredible, fabulous lies he has strung in his last few, desperate days. To call it anything else, Sailwind, is to disavow reality in its entirety.

Rush is nothing more than an older version of Bill Maher. Both are crass, rude and both appeal to nothing more than a niche audience that though they are not similar in political views I would hazard to be about on the same general I.Q level.

Rush also holds no real sway with Republicans in general or he would have been successful in stopping Romney. Even Talking Points Memo TPM was noticing Rush's attacks on Romney.

Rush Limbaugh’s One-Man Campaign To Stop Mitt Romney

We know Mitt Romney has trouble wooing tea partiers to his cause. We know that from the polls and the fact that people as unproven as Donald Trump and Herman Cain have led him in the polls so far this cycle.

But we also know it because Rush Limbaugh just won’t give the man a break.

The allure of magic undies sounded great to me when I first heard about them. Maybe like rocket pants or something.

Many Democrats? Really? It's maybe just my perception, but I'm barely aware of who the Koch brothers are, let alone any conspiracy theories about them

Actually, I'm rather glad to hear that you don't pay a whole lot of attention to folks like Chris Matthews or any Democrat Congressman that he has on his MSNBC show from time to time. This was just two days ago. Also no one has never really been able to answer this but why did Liberals always have to devolve into name calling. This is yet another prime example of it. At the least his guest wasn't having any of it to his credit.

Matthews spoke to Professor Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University and Rep. Ed Markey about Republican politicians who do not take environmental reform issues seriously. Markey said that Hurricane Sandy "frames the election next Tuesday," which comes down to "Mother Nature vs. the Koch brothers."

"Well Professor Oppenheimer, back in the 60s, we called such people pigs. Pigs. No, really. They don't care about the planet, they don't care about the destruction of war. All they want is what they got, their stuff, and they want more of it," Matthews said. "Is that what we're facing here, just greed? I'm not talking about the guy at the coal mine—that's hard work. I'm talking about people who won't listen to you, won't listen to science because they want more stuff."

"I'm not into name calling here," Oppenheimer said.

"Well I am," Matthews said.

This position I really dislike (of anyone). If you are for the war go and fight yourself.

The game is over....after the votes are counted. Even CNN is repeatedly saying the race is too close to call.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

In the lame duck session after Romney's defeat, I'm wondering whether the GOP will be suicidal enough to take it to the edge of the fiscal cliff and trigger another credit rating downgrade like they did the last time.

They totally owned that disaster.

It would be pretty typical if they did. The GOP is well used to treating Americans like toys in a game of bluff.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Mr. Romney, how would you like the end of your political career - toasted or stir-fried?

This is over folks.

Mitt's done.

You can already see signs of the total despair right here on JT - the usual radical Right wingers have fallen silent.

Only the valient are holding on.

I still recommend the Right put up Rick Santorum in '16.

Then it'll be 3 election cycles in a row where the Global Liberals - in fact the entire world - rolls around laughing at the GOP "talent" while conservatives look on stony-faced and all confused wondering "why are they laughing at us?"

Good times! :-)

"This election is over."

According to Ohio News Organization, Obama and Romney are tied at 49%. Hmmm....

No, Serrano, Obama is a head by 3 points. Ohio voters are not stupid as Romney thinks. The reasons are listed below:

1) Romney's record opposing Auto Bailout.

2) Romney's another lie for Toledo auto workers Jeep production will be shipped out to China. The truth is Crysler is adding the 3rd shift for Jeep manufacturing plant.

3) Romney's stance for privatization of FEMA.

4) Social issues against Equal Pay.

5)Social issues against women's rights.

6) Romney's stance against Obmacare.

7) Romney's record on Delphi.

I can go on and on. Most damaging issues against Romney are 1, 2, 3. He will never carry Ohio. The game is over.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Where?

Sorry, my mistake. Romney hasn't released returns for 2007 through 2009. Some writers have presumed that because Romney was running for president through 2007-2008, he might not have been in a questionable position tax-wise.

If Romney took advantage of the amnesty program in 2009, it would be understandable why he also would not release his 2007-2008 returns even if they were clean because omitting the 2009 returns would make things look much more suspicious. His father, an honorable and decent man, and popular governor of my home state, released over a decade of his tax returns.

The son does not measure up to his fathers standards or example.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Sailwind,

Why do conservatives love to play the victim when in fact they are ones who do the most damage. 50% of republicans think Obama is not an American. Half. This is a fact. That McBain is a tax cheat is also true, otherwise he would show his returns as all others have done so before him, including his Dad. Again, a fact.

This is just further proof that republicans live in a bubble of lies and delusion. Yes, there were WMD in Iraq. Yes, OBL is not worth catching. Yes, by making 1% richer the middle class benefits. Hook, line and sinker the republicans swallow the lies. Its really a shame that the democrats do not have a credible opposition now. Which is why Obama will win again in a near landslide probably. The tired and trite policies of the 1980 republicans has just been proven too many times to fail, Americans are sick of republican failures. So they will re-elect a President despite a 7% unemployment rate (thanks to bush) because that is the better option and they know it.

Note that Romney has released details for his returns for 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 -- just not 2009.

Nah, they just accused Romney of causing a man's wife to die of cancer by being CEO of Bain

In reality, some Democratic supporters produced an ad showing a man who explained how he lost his job and health benefits after Bain bought the company he worked for and loaded it up with debt. Because of the loss of benefits, his wife did not seek immediate treatment for what she thought was a minor illness -- a situation and decision faced by millions of Americans. The man came to the conclusion that Romney didn't give a damn about him and his family. Probably true.

The story is in the genre of the swift-boating of John Kerry, only not nearly as scurrilous, and anyone who witnessed those messages against a decorated combat veteran without raising a protest while complaining about this story is a hypocrite.

labeled him a felon for tax cheating on his taxes.

What we know is that Romney had a Swiss bank account. Around about 2008-2009, Swiss banks came forward providing information to the US federal government about thousands of Americans who opened accounts in order to evade US taxes. My government instituted a program which gave amnesty for tax evasion to those who came forward on their own -- would were technically potential felons otherwise. Romney has refused to release the details of his 2009 returns. The open question is whether or not he took advantage of the amnesty program, which many believe he did.

This makes the issue of President Obama not releasing his college grades look extremely petty -- unless there are jurisdictions where a student receiving less than stellar grade is a felony.

Democrats look quite as much like deranged conspiracy theorists, or as if they're playing to the worst instincts of racists and bigots.

That really doesn't explain the Koch brothers conspiracy a great favorite for many Democrats to espouse and the bigotry directed to Romney's Mormon faith with the "Magic Underwear" digs and all.

Mirai - "-Label China a currency manipulator.."

It might be worth mentioning that this will very likely start a trade war.

On Day One.

Should this happen, Americans, perhaps in their thousands, will find their jobs at risk, or worse still, lose them.

As I was saying yesterday. Romney's not just clueless, he's flat out dangerous.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Nah, they just accused Romney of causing a man's wife to die of cancer by being CEO of Bain and labeled him a felon for tax cheating on his taxes.

Accusations which do, at least, have slightly more basis in fact and don't make Democrats look quite as much like deranged conspiracy theorists, or as if they're playing to the worst instincts of racists and bigots.

Democrats are not accusing the Romboid of being a non-American or that he is a Muslim.

Bloomberg endorses Obama FTW!

Bloomberg is a REAL businessman. He started his own successful business, made billions (much more than Romney has), is likeable, and a very successful mayor -so successful, he's in his third term.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Simon,

no comparison between the two side. Democrats are not accusing the Romboid of being a non-American or that he is a Muslim. No comparison at all. A third to a half of the republican base is voting for Romney, even though the do not like him, because they are racist and cannot stomach a half-black man being President.

Dictatorships typically tumble in similar ways: the pack of cards crumbles under a hailstorm of lies fed by the leader and upper echelon, as well as due to deception, propaganda, hatred and bitterness and a base that feeds on all of it.

Looks like the GOP/TP is going to go down the same way.

Hmmm…interesting parallel……

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Well, let's be fair - there are probably plenty of Democrats sticking with Obama because they can't stand Romney or the Republicans. Works for me, personally. I'd vote Obama to keep them out too.

Let's look at Romney's positions shall we?

-Overturn of Roe v. Wade

-Repeal of Obamacare

-Drastic budget cuts from FEMA (possible privatization)

-Medicare into a voucher program

-20% tax cut for everyone (especially for people who don't need it) without knowing how to pay for it.

-Label China a currency manipulator, reignite cold war with Russia

-give $2 trillion to defense (even though they don't need it)

-etc

Democrats are sticking with Obama because they can't live with Romney's policies, not because they hate the person.

For the republicans, its not about how much they like their candidate, its about how much they hate Obama. They are the party of hate, not logic.

Hmmmmm.....what kind of wine to break out for my Obama victory party next week?

Red? White? Perhaps both? :-)

SushiSake, let's go for the 1st class drink all the way; "Bombay Sappaire Martine" with a huge olive. (Blue). We will not settle with less.

When Romney and the GOP finally wake up after getting their a*ses handed to them on plate, I'm predicting the GOP is going to clean house on at least 2 levels:

1/ How could the pick a candidate none of them really liked? Was it just Mitt's money and slick hair? Because it sure isn't his business experience - that's been a disadvantage.

2/ Future philosophy - should the soon-to-be shattered shell of a political party modernize its principles to attract more voters?

Here's some hints:

1/ Ditch the religious base. 2/ Get your history and morals from the real world, not the Bible. 3/ Educate educate educate:

Man did not co-exist with dinosaurs.  No form is rape is "legitimate." Women are humans too. Give them the right to choose.

Republicans just got busted again.

"The New York Times reported on Thursday that Senate Republicans applied pressure to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) in September, successfully persuading it to withdraw a report finding that lowering marginal tax rates for the wealthiest Americans had no effect on economic growth or job creation."

www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2012/11/01/congressional-research-service_n_2059156.html?icid=hp_front_top_art

I remember there's been conservatives on JT who have been pushing the view that cutting taxes on the 1% will stop The Job Creators producing all of those jobs.

Romney's house of cards is crumbling by the day.

Goodbye Ohio.

Lights out GOP.

Good times. :-)

How will people in NYC and New Jersey possibly be able to vote? Although I think both are Dem states, the results will surely be affected. Regardless of which side of the coin faces up after the official coin-toss, it's going to get a lot worse in the US economically and physically, especially regarding individual liberty. End of The Great Experiment looms.

According to Intrade:

Obama's chances of winning: 64.3%

Romney's chances of winning: 34.1%

According to NYT/538.com:

Obama's chances of winning: 79%

Romney's chances of winning: 21%

79.9% chance that Obama will win Ohio

58.8% change that Romney will win Florida

Colorado 4-Year-Old Is Tired Of 'Bronco Bama' And Mitt Romney

I had a big kick out of this. Bronco Bama....:) 5 more days,

I'd noted Romney's recent scattershot approach; Sargent sums it up here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/mitt-romneys-kamikaze-strategy/2012/11/01/27ca3140-2435-11e2-ac85-e669876c6a24_blog.html

Next, I'd expect he'd run an ad in Wisconsin alleging a Michelle plot to outlaw cheese.

Whether these lies - and lies they are - will help Romney is doubtful; they will, though, certainly cloud his legacy. Historians will look back at the Romneys and remark at the honesty of the father and duplicity of the son.

JT: If Obama wins either Ohio or Florida, I believe Romney's chances are slim and none.

Two things:

National polls include Rasmussen. LOL

Second, Obama is way up in OH, and trending even better. This election is over.

Obama: "You know that I'll make tough political decisions even when they are not popular."

Serrano: Well, yes, especially with a certain portion of the population hell bent against it.

Much of it focused on Romney’s new television and radio ads in critical Ohio that suggest automakers General Motors and Chrysler are adding jobs in China at the expense of workers in the Midwestern swing state. Vice President Joe Biden said the spots were “one of the most flagrantly dishonest ads I can ever remember

I've yet to read even a half-hearted defense of this ad from the Romney surrogates. What gives? There must be a Rushbo recommended response.

@Serrano

It just boggles the mind, but like they say, "you just can't make this stuff up."
