Wow! This Ryan character sounds like a great friend of only the wealthy! Poor Iowa farmers gets into the White House!!

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

A couple of years ago, President Obama said this of Paul Ryan, that he was "absolutely sincere about wanting to reduce the deficit." He called Ryan's plan "a legitimate proposal" and added that he gave him "credit for at least being willing to put out there some very tough choices." President Obama addressed Paul Ryan at a GOP retreat in 2010 and he said this, quote, "We're not going to be able to do anything about these entitlements if what we do characterize whatever proposal's are put out there as 'well, you know, that's the other party being irresponsible...the other party trying to hurt our senior citizens.'" Does he still feel that way?

Iowa can go either way. Romney-Ryan slogan should be "More jobs, less deficit & better future". Empty words are cheap.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Paul Ryan wants to block Farmers Aide Bill.

I want to that to be passed for all farmers who are suffering in the worst draught in history. Iowa is a dust bowl now.

Paul Ryan walked away from these Iowa farmers who drove hundreds miles to get his answer after the speech..

I want a VP who is compassionate and cares.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I meant I want that to be passed..... typo

"Obama accused Ryan of blocking aid to drought-stricken farmers"

The fiend! If Ryan is convicted, will this hurt Romney's and his chances of winning the election?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

"Romney already has tried to distance himself from his running mate’s polarizing budget plan,"

Wow, brimming with confidence over his decision, I see. Yet another Romney move.

I am so disgusted with the liberal media and liberals at how they are just blatantly lying their a* off to the American people! The NY times (hardly conservative*) exposed the lie that the Dems and his holiness will say or go to the lowest of levels to hold on to power! Chicago thug politics at its worst! Obama claimed Ryan was standing in the way of passing a farm bill to help struggling farmers suffering through droughts. Only one problem*. Ryan and the Republican-controlled House passed a farm bill two weeks ago.*

An effort to provide emergency aid for American ranchers and farmers reeling from a year of drought, frost and other calamities collapsed on Thursday as members of Congress departed for their five-week August recess, leaving behind a pile of unfinished legislation as they go home to campaign for re-election.

After refusing to consider a sweeping five-year farm measure, House Republican leaders jammed through a short-term $383 million package of loans and grants for livestock producers and a limited number of farmers. The measure passed 223 to 197, a narrow margin for a bill that has an impact on so many states. But Democrats balked in protest over the way the farm legislation has been handled and some Republicans objected to the costs.

Democratic leaders in the Senate, which had already passed a bipartisan five-year bill, refused to take up the House measure, faulting House Republican leaders for failing to consider the broader legislation in time.

“I’m not passing a bill that only covers some producers,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, the chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Moments after the House passed its bill, Ms. Stabenow took to the Senate floor to say that lawmakers would instead work informally over the August recess to try to put together a new measure to present to Congress when it meets in September. The White House would have considered the House measure, but she resisted, Senate aides said.

The Democrat’s bill wanted more funding for food stamps and wasn’t a “farm” bill. So as one sees, Obama is a pathological liar. Ryan voted for the farm bill that Democrats killed.

If anyone is a "fiend, scoundrel, pathological liar, dishonest to the core is 1) the media for just NOT being honest and playing a clear partisan role and 2) Obama who as typical as only he can do, is going through any lengths to keep his reign on the throne by ANY means necessary! Ryan is the Dems worst nightmare, the man doesn't flinch and the man can stand toe to toe with any politician. If I were Biden, I would be (expletive) in my pants BIG TIME! He is quick on his feet, he was born into this and he won't let Obama do a song and a dance to wriggle and BS his way out of stating the true facts.

All media (TV, Radio, Magazine) received cancellation of their LIVE interviews effective tomorrow. They are only permitted to do live interview with FOX. This decision was probably made by Karl Rove and the KOCH Brothers. ..

Which would be expected from a "one-sided, liberal, bias media" why would anyone be shocked? But since most people watch FOX anyway, might be a good thing, even better. Good move.

Ryan is the Dems worst nightmare, the man doesn't flinch and the man can stand toe to toe with any politician.

The man is an ideologue. His ideas do not stand up to scrutiny; the majority of them are rejected by most Americans; many of them are rejected by Romney himself. Go ahead and knock yourself out, Romney supporters; Biden will wipe the floor with this guy.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@Bassfunk MOST people watch Fox? Really? Some of us watch it for pure comedy value. Neanderthals ( I'm not sure people at Fox believe they existed ) such as Hannity and the towering intellect of Beck ( was the funniest man on tv ) are what you would expect from something involving the crook Murdoch and his whole sleazy rightwing organisation. Thankfully, the UK has woken up to this appalling organisation in the cold light of day. Watch at your leisure.

The images shown on TV here in the States was of Mr. Ryan being cool, calm and carrying on with his speech while Obama's OWS buddies -- shrieking at the top of their lungs like spoiled 5-year-old children -- were escorted from the stage.

Classic.

Radicals only read or watch points of view that agree with their ideology that's why FOX "news" is perfect for them.

Darn those 24-54 year old radicals in the U.S for tuning in.

The July 2012 ratings are in. Although cable news ratings can lag during summer months, the tragic mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, 2012 presidential race, and the lure of the London Olympics seemed to keep viewers tuned in. Overall, ratings trends were maintained.

Fox News dominated the top thirteen spots in July and secured 13 out of the top 15 programs in the coveted 25-54 age demographic.

Paul Ryan will be here today at Lakewood, CO west side of Denver. Probably that's the only place he would be accepted. Denver, Aurora, Pueblo, Aspen, Boulder, Ft. Collins and all other farm cities have nothing to do with this guy.

Paul Ryan, please pass the Farm Bills now. Farmers have nothing to eat on the table. They are starving to death. Paul Ryan wants to cut ALL Farm Bill permanently.

Paul Ryan, you must have received a letter from your own Catholic Diocese stating you have been such a disgrace and a disappointment to him. He even said Paul Ryan is a cruel man to cut fund for those who are in need. Now all Catholic churches of America are turning away from you and against you.

You just had to go there.

Now here is the sad part.

Now I wonder why Dems are nervous and trying to find ANYTHING on this guy! A liberals worst nightmare and I see why. Ryan will out talk, out think and go with Obama toe to toe and all that without a teleprompter.

Paul Ryan, please pass the Farm Bills now. Farmers have nothing to eat on the table. They are starving to death. Paul Ryan wants to cut ALL Farm Bill permanently.

Apparently, you didn't read my previous post at 02:43pm

But as usual, nice try.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Paul Ryan, please pass the Farm Bills now. Farmers have nothing to eat on the table. They are starving to death.

He already has but the Democrats in the Senate could have cared less. Farmers have crop insurance that will cover their losses, ranchers on the other hand, do not and are the ones who are suffering and who need the help now.

The U.S. Senate will not take up a $383 million drought assistance package approved earlier Thursday by House lawmakers, meaning Congress will leave Washington for a five-week recess without approving support for farmers suffering from the worst drought in decades.

The House approved the package in a 223 to 197 vote Thursday afternoon to help livestock producers who are struggling to feed their herds.

But Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow (D., Mich.) said on the Senate floor that the House bill doesn't accomplish enough, and that she wouldn't support the legislation. Democratic leadership aides confirmed that the Senate wouldn't take up the House bill before adjourning for the August recess.

Most farm losses from the drought are covered by crop insurance, but livestock producers are not. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (R., Okla.) said completing a full five-year farm bill remains important to him, but the drought legislation is a priority.

"Ranchers are in dire need," Mr. Lucas said. "We have a drought...and I'm here to provide a solution."

bass4funk: "Which would be expected from a "one-sided, liberal, bias media" why would anyone be shocked? But since most people watch FOX anyway, might be a good thing, even better. Good move."

Boy, someone seems upset. Understandable, given that the party you support is nothing but tools and Romney just pulled out one of the biggest. You're probably misdirecting your anger given that you know this has just, hands down, lost him the election. Romney himself is distancing himself from the man he JUST chose to run as his potential VP!! Now what does that say except, besides a completely lack of self-confidence, that the game is over?

But hey, let's praise FOX and blame everything else on the 'liberal media' instead of actually doing something about it, eh?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Yesterday, Obama has already promised he would do everything to make it pass while Paul Ryan said to reporters he has nothing to do with that.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

@Smith

This time, you just made absolutely NOOO sense whatsoever.

But hey, let's praise FOX and blame everything else on the 'liberal media' instead of actually doing something about it, eh?

Moderator: Please do not refer to Obama as NObama. Such nonsense lowers the level of discussion.

Now I wonder why Dems are nervous and trying to find ANYTHING on this guy!

When I said that the man is an ideologue, I forgot to add the modifier "opportunistic." He is all quite for big government before he is against it. He voted party-line during all eight years of the Bush administration. He voted for Bush's unfunded tax cuts; he voted for Bush's unfunded wars (both of them); he voted for Bush's unfunded Medicare drug prescription; he voted for the auto bailout; he voted for TARP.

He's now a fiscal hawk - to an extent, and that extent is that, as much as he abhors debt, he feels it is preferable to historically-justifiable levels of taxation on the wealthy. With Romney still withholding his tax returns, we won't know if Ryan's plan to lower Romney's tax bill to zero would actually save him money (it would, at least, save him lawyer and accountant fees); we also don't know whether Romney socked away those millions in his IRA in anticipation that inheritance taxes would be zeroed, as Ryan suggests (for Romney to suggest such a thing would be unseemly, even for him); it is clear that he would prefer skyrocketing debt to revenue-led sanity.

I look forward to him trying to defend this.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Romney himself is distancing himself from the man he JUST chose to run as his potential VP!! Now what does that say except, besides a completely lack of self-confidence, that the game is over?

Romney's the guy at the top of the ticket. Ryan as the guy in second place is not going to be calling the shots or taking the lead over Romney on the budget or anything else.

Yesterday, Obama has already promised he would do everything to make it pass while Paul Ryan said to reporters he has nothing to do with that.

What's Ryan suppose to do? Vote for something he already has and now call Obama up offering his help to persuade Harry Reid the Democrat Senate Leader to pass emergency drought relief that's sitting going nowhere in in the Senate now?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Smith

But hey, let's praise FOX and blame everything else on the 'liberal media' instead of actually doing something about it, eh?

Didn't Romney announce the guy as president? haha.

Despite that horrible gaffe, the fact remains that ALREADY, merely days after choosing Ryan, Romney is choosing to move away from him. Why not take him to Florida with him? oh yeah, Ryan would destroy his ticket with the elderly given his stance on medicare!

Seriously, this is more than funny... Romney is done. I think this is even a worse pick than McCain choosing Palin.

And let me add this to make it more bizzare.

And didn't Romney say that he did not make a mistake for this guy (Paul Ryan)? Average Americans do not think so. Romney made a mistake. Paul Ryan is running a show. The poll for Obama is now shooting up to 56% while Romney is going down rapidly to 39% since Paul Ryan pick.

That's not a correct answer as a VP candidate. This will hurt him and he is done from political career for good and forever. No VP candidates in past defeated teams have ever came back to political career. He will go back to private sector, period. No chairmanship in Budget Committee.....thank god! Next.....

Ummm Smith,

U.S. adults are evenly split in their reactions to the major deficit-reduction plans being debated in Washington. Forty-four percent prefer the Democratic plan proposed by President Barack Obama, while 43% say Republican Rep. Paul Ryan's plan is better.

Heres how it break downs by age........

Ryan's plan includes a complete restructuring of Medicare for people younger than 55. Pluralities of middle-aged Americans as well as those 65 and older prefer Ryan's plan to Obama's, while adults 18 to 29 show more support for Obama's

No need to right now at all, he can cover other battleground states for better coverage for the ticket between the two of them.

He'll be in Florida soon enough, after all that is where is going to make his national debut as V.P and give his first official V.P speech to the entire nation after he's formally nominated........You do understand the Republican convention is held in Tampa Florida this year, one does hope.

I believe we were on the cusp of a deflationary spiral which would have created a Depression. I think that’s probably pretty likely. If we would have allowed that to happen, I think we would have had a big government agenda sweeping through this country so fast that we wouldn’t have recovered from it.

Thanks, bass. The link is certainly enlightening, though not in the way you'd probably thought. The miscapitalized D (what do you expect from the Dailycaller?) was not Ryan's doing; the rest was. I know it's tough to be a Keynesian when your ideology rejects Keynesism, but if one guy could handle this pretzel, it would be Ryan (Romney, funny enough, has shown himself equally adept). This is the Austrian economics argument of "We had to destroy the village in order to save it." Or, if you'd like, the adage, "There are no atheists in foxholes." In other words, Keynesism is abhorrent except when you're staring into the abyss - and then you do what you have to do and cover it up with pretty excuses later.

Mitt is making similar pronouncements regarding Pentagon budget cuts now, too. We wouldn't want precipitous budget cuts to derail the economy now, would we? - especially when a Republican is president.

Of course, you would never see it for what it is, that is usually what I expect from liberals, got them in a corner, they will chew a hole right through you in order to survive, which is a normal day at the office. Liberals hate when they are confronted with the facts, hard, backed up, signed, sealed and delivered. What do they do, what can they do, the same thing that a dog will do when you scold him, tuck his tails between his legs. Whatever diatribe you want to rant doesn't matter Dems are scared of Ryan and why, he can do something that the others couldn't, hold his own agains Obama and then some. We won't even talk about Biden, that's like Mickey Mouse going up against Mike Tyson!

There ya go, tiger! It IS nice in this day and age to see someone so romantically attracted to their candidate - this is certainly a lesson I hope our youth take particular note of. This is particularly true in that how Ryan will present himself remains so obscure. Will he defend his voting record or try to justify it? Will he obfuscate his differences with Romney or be his own man? How will he justify his 17 years in the House after passing just two bills (one, to lower taxes on arrow parts [this is apparently a big issue in Wisconsin]; the other to name a post office)?

Oh, the list goes on, yet it is heartening to see the faith and hope some see in this young man.

Paul Ryan had already attacked Liberals as a cancer in public record. No, Liberals are not a cancer.

The Liberals work hard and pay tax to government unlike Romney and Paul Ryan. When we are poor, we become Liberals as there is nothing to lose to be Liberals.. When we are rich in knowledge and resources, we become Liberals as we have NO FEAR to lose to be Liberals.. Conservative people do not want to share a fair share in life as they live in FEAR and INSECURITY. They do not care about others. They are a bunch of Mr. Scrooge.

As I said before, I am very proud to say I am a Liberal as I try to bring changes in society. Because of this unique charactor many liberals are born with, many liberals become true leaders in business world and society while many conservative people only fit to be managers There are big differences between Leaders an Managers.

This is a famous speech delivered by JFK that had transformed me to Liberal.

.

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

I am surprised to hear Paul Ryan has never read a book "Common Sense" by Payne and "The Liberty" written by John Stuart Mill, and "A Wealth of Nation" written by Adam Smith. They are "MUST READ" books as a politician. No wonder he is the way he is. No surprise here.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Luca

Dems are delighted by Ryan .He's a straightforward idiot and feels no need to hide the fact. Watch the polls over the next couple of weeks.

Yeah, they say that now, the calm before the storm, remember Ali and Foreman? Obama will be toast in any debate with Ryan, why? Because one thing that Ryan eats, sleeps, breaths is budgets call him a budget-geek. Yeah, Dems are delighted, but Repubs are also.

@Laguna

Please, What did Obama pass while he was in the Senate? (when he wasn't absent) How's Obama's voting record, so what's your point? You are expecting perfection in an opponent? He is running for the VP slot, how about we dig into the legislative record of Obama while he was in the Senate... As for faith and hope, betcha, Obama won't be running on that this time around.

@global

Paul Ryan had already attacked Liberals as a cancer in public record. No, Liberals are not a cancer.

Depends on your point of view, but these last 4 years, I would say, "yes"

The Liberals work hard and pay tax to government unlike Romney and Paul Ryan. When we are poor, we become Liberals as there is nothing to lose to be Liberals.. When we are rich in knowledge and resources, we become Liberals as we have NO FEAR to lose to be Liberals..

That's the problem, NO FEAR to over TAX businesses, NO FEAR to increase spending, spending, NO FEAR to go to ANY lengths to stay in power, even if it means to intimidate or fabricate stories to justify any means to hold on to the crown, NO FEAR, but you need a soul to have fear.

Conservative people do not want to share a fair share in life as they live in FEAR and INSECURITY. They do not care about others. They are a bunch of Mr. Scrooge.

Conservatives want people to be self-reliant and to help them where they need it, but giving them stuff or more bluntly put, other peoples stuff. Self-reliance is the key, NOT keeping the nipple in the societies mouth, we have become more dependent on government than ever before, 99 weeks of unemployment and the Dems want to extend that even longer, extending benefits to illegals, I could go on and on, but I digress! Correction, liberals are leeches of the highest order.

As I said before, I am very proud to say I am a Liberal as I try to bring changes in society.

You sure do.

Because of this unique charactor many liberals are born with, many liberals become true leaders in business world and society while many conservative people only fit to be managers There are big differences between Leaders an Managers.

Huh? What?

I am surprised to hear Paul Ryan has never read a book "Common Sense" by Payne and "The Liberty" written by John Stuart Mill, and "A Wealth of Nation" written by Adam Smith. They are "MUST READ" books as a politician. No wonder he is the way he is. No surprise here.

But there is a flip side to that. I too, think there are books that the left and especially the anointed one should read books that are more educational and with great substance: "Demonic" by Ann Coulter, "Bias" by Bernie Goldberg, "Capitalism and Freedom" by Rose Friedman, "The Epistle to the Romans" by Karl Barth. Now these are books that are not only a must read for ANY politicians, but people that want and need to understand how big government is destroying the greatest nation on the planet. But I won't hold my breath. Liberals prefer living in the dark, typical.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Conservatives want people to be self-reliant and to help them where they need it, but giving them stuff or more bluntly put, other peoples stuff. Self-reliance is the key

You tell this to Seniors, Disabled Veterans, People with disability, Reserchers and Innovators on Grants and Unemployed, Farmers and Small Business Owners of America. Good luck.

Ann Coulter, "Bias" by Bernie Goldberg, "Capitalism and Freedom" by Rose Friedman, "The Epistle to the Romans" by Karl Barth

Why just mentioned all books that are right side? Friedman's theory followed by Greenspan failed. Apprently, you have no idea what Friedman believes in monetary policy. You cannot fool me here.

Be glad to tell them in detail! Seniors that Obama gutted 700 billion from medicare, Disabled Vets that Obama disrespected time after time. Researchers, innovators that are constantly losing their jobs because the government money that is provided via the tax payers gets spent on Green projects that fail again and again and again. Farmers, yes, California used to be the breadbasket of the west, farmers that lost their livelihood over a small fish and not to mention liberals and their over the top crazy stance of NOT drilling and keeping us hostage on Mideast oil where we have enough oil to sustain us for at least another 180 years and ween us off the Mideast oil. And you can forget about small business, because CA is over taxed, why would any sane person want to do business there. Yes, my home state and the liberal ideology that drove it into the ground. Good luck!

She is a woman of Rush Limbaugh. Paul Ryan is an opportunist, and I see how he advanced. His nickname is a "Brown Nose" There is NO short cut in higher education, next?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

It wasn't just that he praised Ryan, but he damned Obama with faint praise -- or actually none at all:

“Have any of you all met Paul Ryan? We should get him to come to the university. I’m telling you this guy is amazing. ... He is honest, he is straightforward, he is sincere. And the budget that he came forward with is just like Paul Ryan. It is a sensible, straightforward, serious budget and it cut the budget deficit just like we did, by $4 trillion. … The president came out with his own plan ... as you remember, came out with a budget and I don’t think anybody took that budget very seriously. The Senate voted against it 97 to nothing. He therefore after a lot of pressure from folks like me, uh, he came out with a new budget framework, and in that new budget framework, he cut, he cut the budget deficit by $4 trillion dollars over 12 years, and to, be candid, this, this $4 trillion dollars cut was very heavily back-end loaded, so if you looked at it on a 10-year basis, and compared apples to apples, it really was about a $2 1/2 trillion dollar cut." -- Erskine Bowles, fmr. Chief of Staff for President Bill Clinton

They showed this on Fox a few times this a.m. Bowles also said something to the effect of: I always thought I was pretty good with arithmetic, but this guy ran circles around me.

Obama budget defeated 99-0 in Senate

http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2012/may/16/obama-budget-defeated-99-0-senate/

Romney should mention this A LOT at the debates.

How can Obama defend his “leadership” when his plan got not a single vote from his own party?

2nd time ? the Senate with a Democrat majority has voted unanimously against one of his budgets.

You do not know, bass= 4= funk. They are all classics in Academic arena . Apparently, he was wasting his time on books of Ann Cutler (white right winger extremist) a cheap magazine.. I see.... She is a woman of Rush Limbaugh. Paul Ryan is an opportunist, and I see how he advanced. His nickname is a "Brown Nose" There is NO short cut in higher education, next?

Yes, I do know. Whatever you say, if you don't like Ryan, fine. Disparaging and calling people names is something liberals are very, very good at. You don't have to like Coulter, but she does piss off the left and that means, she is doing her job. I enjoy reading her work and that's all that counts. And before you talk about Opportunist, all politicians are opportunists including, yes, Obama, the biggest one. Obama is an egotistical self-centered politician of the highest order, who loves it when people brown nose him. And if you don't think so, I have a drawer full of evidence to back up his self-centeredness. As for higher education, who's fault is it that our school system is in ruins and I am talking specifically about our public schools. Pathetic!

It wasn't just that he praised Ryan, but he damned Obama with faint praise -- or actually none at all:

Students in Generation "Z" do not want Paul Ryan in the college campus as he is cutting all Fderal Grants on Reserch and Development and scholarships that are given to them. . .

In addition to that, he is planning to increase a "Student Loan" interest while Obama is not.. . Paul Ryan has no interest in maximizing every student's potential to be a problem solver in society. ..

Paul Ryan is not for Education.. He has forgotten he was once getting federal financial help when he was a student many years ago. These students are smart and they see THAT. A double standard, right?

American is facing an intellectual challenge today. We need to realize this is a critical time transforming this country from Old Economy to New Economy for survival. The higher education is a key!

Again, I just do not see Paul Ryan will be invited by Student leaders or he never will.

I am listening Paul Ryan's speech now.

"Let's keep jobs here, not to overseas!!". Well, he cannot fool me. As long as Romney and Paul Ryan team goes to Washington, JOB WILL GO TO OVERSEAS! Apparently, he never learned Economics core; Demand/Supply. It's very hard to believe that he has a degree in Economics. All of us here have a belly laugh. He is a joker!

Coulter, but she does piss off the left and that means, she is doing her job.

No, bass-4-funk, all legal professionals (d) feel pity for her as she could not make living in legal profession. She was not well liked and toasted cases before becoming a big mouth piece. . FYI

@bass 4 funk, Definately, the school voucher is NOT the answer and it is NOT constitutional.

Students in Generation "Z" do not want Paul Ryan in the college campus as he is cutting all Fderal Grants on Reserch and Development and scholarships that are given to them. . .

Here is the problem with that, because of Obama's out of control spending we are at a cross roads where we need to cut, CUT something, that's the problem with liberals, spend, spend, spend, spend until the money well is dry, Obama already cut NASA and now thanks to him, we have to ask the Russians for a lift in Space, not to mention, they are charging us an arm and a leg (REALLY) military budget is cut, so now if we really need to go to war or defend our allies or need to engage in any military conflict, we will be in deep... Scholarships, Research Development programs, Fed Grants, interest rates on new subsidized Stafford loans will remain at 3.4 percent. That's estimated to save 7.4 million students about $1,000 each on the average loan, which is usually paid off over 10 or more years. Applying basic math, a skill which seems to be beyond the ability of many college graduates these days, the amount of savings involved is a whopping $8.33 per month ($1,000 divided by 120 "or more" months). All the ink used and bandwidth burned by leftist partisans has bee over less than 30 cents a day.

But amid all the rhetoric, it's easy to forget that not everyone who has a student loan would be affected. For those who would be, the impact might not be as dire as feared. Here's what you need to know: To grasp what's at stake, it's important to first understand that Stafford loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized. Subsidized loans alleviate the cost of borrowing for low-income students because the government pays the interest on the loan while the student is in school. Eligibility is determined based on financial need; about 70 percent who qualify for subsidized loans have a family income of less than $50,000. With unsubsidized loans, interest accrues right away, so the loan balance grows while the student is in school. The current debate centers only on subsidized Stafford loans; the Education Department estimates that about 30 percent of undergraduates have this type. The other aspect of subsidized loans is that they currently come with a fixed rate of 3.4 percent. This is the rate that's set to double this summer; unsubsidized Stafford loans already carry a fixed interest rate of 6.8 percent. If the rate on subsidized loans is increased, the higher rate would not apply retroactively to existing loans. The fact that this only involves new loans certainly doesn't make news reports very often. I would suggest that it doesn't for one reason: It's harder to sensationalize a problem when too many relevant facts get in the way.

The price of college tuition has skyrocketed in recent decades. Between 1982 and 2007, tuition and fees increased 439 percent while the median family income rose 147 percent, according to a report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. The price of in-state tuition at a public university has increased by more than 5 percent annually in the past 10 years. It jumped 15 percent between 2008 and 2010 alone. Cuts to state education budgets have played a significant role in increasing those costs, particularly in recent years. How much influence the expansion of access to federal aid has played is less certain; many insist it plays none. An analysis this year by the American Council on Education concluded there is no evidence to suggest it has, and that any relationship between the two is incidental, not causal. The student loan rate reduction will only last so long. Sooner or later they will have to start repaying or they will have zero creditworthiness. Student loan debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy nor can it be avoided except by death or total disability (which is becoming increasingly difficult to certify

In addition to that, he is planning to increase a "Student Loan" interest while Obama is not.. . Paul Ryan has no interest in maximizing every student's potential to be a problem solver in society. ..

Another liberal spin

Paul Ryan is not for Education.. He has forgotten he was once getting federal financial help when he was a student many years ago. These students are smart and they see THAT. A double standard, right?

American is facing an intellectual challenge today. We need to realize this is a critical time transforming this country from Old Economy to New Economy for survival. The higher education is a key!

We sure do, but look at where liberals want to take us. I remember, when students last year were protesting student budget cuts, what was their answer; tax the rich! That is always the answer for liberals. They were asked would they take a cut in pay to help reduce or debt, they said " a little" but there should not be ANY pay cut. So do our liberal educators teach our students about fiscal responsibility before sending them out in the world, hardly. Hmm sounds familiar to what is happening in Greece right? Any wonder the state is in trouble with a budget deficit? But hey California let the unions run my state look how well that has worked out so far for you. LIBERAL FAIL!!!!!!!!

Again, I just do not see Paul Ryan will be invited by Student leaders or he never will.

If students knew the truth and properly educated on our out of control debt, break it down and give them the facts, they would probably think differently.

bass-4-funk, I do not know what you do for living. One of my kids currently owes $325,000 for her student loan. She is only 27 yrs old practicing a medicine. Do you know what's like when you owe $325,000 excluding home and car loans? You are very lucky. Hope someday she will be able to be your doc.

They're are gonna put ya'll back into chains - VP Biden

At what point does this all get to be just too much BS? First Obama's campaign accuses Romney of being a felon, then Senate Majority Leader uses an unnamed (ie. non-existent) "source" to claim that Romney hasn't paid taxes in 10 years - so I guess the IRS is too incompetent to figure that out, now Biden is saying that Blacks are going to be made into slaves again. The Obama campaign and Dems have lost their marbles. What next, Ryan throwing an old lady in a wheelchair over a cliff?

Quite possible if he were able somehow to perceive a potential profit. (One less non-productive Medicare scrounger, maybe?)

@luca

Honestly, if liberals think that conservatives will throw granny by the wayside is totally absurd to even suggest that is mind boggling! What the Dems and Obama are doing is over the top dishonest! Conservatives just want a way to fix all this without sinking the country further into heavier debt, both parties have been irresponsible in this, however, knowing that, you would think, liberals would slow down thw spending and they are doing the exact opposite, they are racking up the debt to a point where we might not ever get out if this. This is Greece on steroids!

@global

Yes, I do. My parents didn't give me anything and I took out grants, loans etc and had to get different jobs to pay back all of it, I am totally aware, but that was a different time, when we didn't have all of these financial problems, some of them were festering, but otherwise, we were fine, but today is a different story. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY! We have to cut back on a lot of things, we have to, we/ this administration is NOT fiscally responsible. Dems and liberals think that America is awash with money and there are other resources we need to tap into to get it, but sorry, that well is dried up. We can't afford that anymore, this is why, it'd gotten to that point, something needs to get cut, it's going to hurt, but better now, recover, than NOT and having nothing at all. Again, when it comes to the economy, liberals get a solid F!

The election will boil down to two main issues: vote for a big government apparatus, where the government will have its hands in everything that you do.

Or

Vote for a smaller government that puts the responsibility in the people's hands, less intrusion and encourages bigger growth in the private sector.

Those are Your two choices, which one you choose will determine which direction our country will turn.
