Having forfeited his US citizenship when he enrolled in an Indonesian madrassa no politician knows better than Obama what it means to be in America but not a legal citizen.

“Using reconciliation to push health care through will make it much harder for Congress to come together on a topic as important as immigration,” Graham said.

Translation: You get that health care reform bill and yolu can forget about some crumby immigration bill.

Ps-s-s-t, President Obama we need jobs, don't forget.

Oh Odogma, you're such a kidder. < :-)

And what's the deal with Obama's supposed "aunt" from Kenya who has been here illegally for years. I heard they keep delaying her final appeal for deportation hearing (while she mooches off government benefits).

Obama says...blah blah blah (again).

Immigration overhaul? Harvard-educated Obama addressed a group of Mexican dignitaries on May 5 and kept calling it "Cinco de quatro."

I like Obama. He can parse his sentences, speaks the English language lucidly without drooling and doesn't choke on pretzels. I realise none of these are prerequisites for those aspiring to the nation's highest office, and such qualities in fact probably alienate a fairly large segment of American voters.

Its way past time to put up a REAL wall on the Mexican border. Instead, all we get is pandering to criminals to give them amnesty and a drivers license. Time for the drug pushing, job sucking criminals to go home.

Instead of Mexico, how about a wall on the Canadian border? It would keep them drug using, unemployed criminals out.

God, not a birther. Please.

Could not agree more. Unfortunately, this is one issue which the President probably won't have any difficulty getting an amnesty bill passed. Because both Republicans and Democrats will both fall in line on this. Dems cause they know the latinos will see them as being supportive, and vote for them, Republicans because think that the illegals aid business, and a lot of them are pro-business, damn the costs.

birthers, truthers, nutters.. man, the spin on people.

I would like to say the my mom went the legal route, before there was a "wet foot dry foot" policy in place. I don't see why so many won't do that, especially Russians and Middle Easterners.

As for Hispanics, I really think we've gotten a bad rap, of course mostly thanks to the drug gangs. 90% of us share the same values as you anglos - religion, history, and culture. You should welcome immigration but of course not condone illegal immigration. Those in support of amnesty miss a few important points and one big one is by allowing the "bad guys" to slip through, you are hurting us. Those against the amnesty are missing one big point and that is that you guys came from somewhere else too....

Skip, I'm in favor of Legal immigration, totally against Illegal Immigration. Also against Amnesty. It quite frankly doesn't work. We've tried that route before. It was a failure, people saw that others had gotten amnesty and citizenship, and streamed across the border in ever increasing waves. Expect the same thing if thats the Obama solution.

I think the better solution would be requiring all illegals to return to their native countries, open up the number of legal immigrants, give those who have lived in the US say, 5 years without breaking the law, a slightly higher shot at getting in legally. And most important, ease the length of time it takes to get a valid pass into the country. Would need to finish the border fence as well, to prevent those who want to ignore the line, and jump across. I'd even be in favor of easing entry and citizenship requirements for families of citizens.

The point is, there is common ground here. The hold up from my perspective is amnesty. If Bush had been willing to push for real reform, and not give amnesty, he could have gotten this done while he was in office. Obama unfortunately won't have the any trouble getting this through once he finally gets around to it. And after all, considering how screwed the Dems are come November, its not like one more issue is going to hurt any worse. They've got nothing to lose.

since the previous arguments on health care were that the US needs to join the rest of the world perhaps they should adopt other countries' immmigration policies. I see on JT a lot on how bad the Japanese immigration system is, and I won't defend it, but check out Mexico or Brazil's. I was shocked. of course you could say the economies are a factor, but at the moment, while we have an almost 10% un-employment and higher in some places, I just think we should help those in the US first and then talk about making immigration easier or in some cases just something to laugh at.

molenir: It was a failure, people saw that others had gotten amnesty and citizenship, and streamed across the border in ever increasing waves." I believe that was in the 60's and at that time, the US was going up, but now its going down. It made sense then, it doesn't right now. Again, if my family could deal with the x year wait, why can't anyone else?

the US, a country made up of immigrants...are keeping immigrants out. Hilarious. The majority of the illegal immigrants are people taking the shit jobs that most americans wont take. Only a big strengthening of latin american economy can really help this problems. But at least the millions of illegal immigrants who are in fear of being deported, and who are already having a job, should be helped into a better life.

Actually it was 1987, signed by President Reagen after promises by the Democrats that they would address his real concerns about the issue. A promise they immediately abandoned. Of course their Republican colleagues didn't exactly push them on the subject either so they can't be completely faulted for their broken promise.

The majority of the illegal immigrants are people taking the shit jobs that most americans wont take.

This idea is idiotic. There is no job an American won't take if the pay and benefits are good enough, and if their situation is dire enough.

"I like Obama. He can parse his sentences, speaks the English language lucidly without drooling and doesn't choke on pretzels."

Yeah, but he sucks as president.

Molenir, I didn't learn that one in history class. I was just starting HS in 87'.

the US, a country made up of immigrants...are keeping immigrants out. Hilarious." No, its not. the US needs to first help Americans. You can't keep just letting people in especially if you can't help them. What do you want, more unemployment, homelessness, ethnic strife?

beelzebub:"I like Obama. He can parse his sentences, speaks the English language lucidly without drooling and doesn't choke on pretzels"

Bingo! When bush, who was the woorst president ever, was in office, illegal aliens HAD to come to America because bush's crony capitalism was literally choking off the surrounding economies mainly by exporting American jobs to China, and Mexicans had to come and do the jobs Americans woudn't. But now that the people spoke and elected Obama, who is just fabulous, well, undocumented workers pour into the country because yes, as strange as it might seem to rightists, Obama can parse his sentences correctly, he has a incredible dialect and he doesn7t drool like bush did.And even though unemployment is now slightly higher than it was in the past there are still millionsof jobs Americans WON'T do so there is really nothing wrong with undocumented workers doing them AND getting free health care in exchange. Anyways, methinks Obama is just as popular in Central and South America as he is worldwide, so immigration overhaul will be a piece of pie.

Gombei - Another good one.
