Delusional. Tell that to the Iraqis and Afghans and the people of Okinawa.......

“We are safer. It’s not going to be a source of terrorist attacks again.”

Not on America anyway. All people in Afghanistan are too concerned about their own butt right now to have guests from Saudi Arabia there training.

Certainly in some ways America is safer in the short run, but the world?

What I am mostly concerned with is the long run. And I think that most of what these troops' unquestioning obedience to orders has done is make America a target. I thank them not.

because American troops put country first

They put government orders first. Big difference there.

I'm not an American, but would rather rely on the US than on China or Russia or Japan or Iran to be the world's policeman.

Dictator Saddam Hussein and his winsome sons and his cronies no longer running Iraq.

And so now ISIS blooms there and there is still sporatic fighting between Sunnis and Shiites.

the Taliban no longer keeping girls from going to school

Now all the kids go to school and they all get killed in Pakistan. Is it better to be uneducated or dead?

Anyway, you forget about the Peshawar attack already??

and giving sanctuary to the likes of Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan..

Right. Instead he gets sanctuary in Pakistan while the Taliban takes over swathes of Pakistan's territory...nuclear armed Pakistan!

the people of Okinawa and the rest of Japan kept out of trouble for the past 70 years...

Keeping the Soviets out in 45 was grand, but a decades long presence was not necessary to do that. In fact, U.S. forces being here sparked massive Chinese armament in the last decade.

Switzerland does not need US or Russia troops in their home soil. It is the most peaceful and enviable place on that earth. Okinawa residents have never had joy and laughter for hosting US bases.

How about middle east? Are they not fighting each other under foreign people's troops?

'Delusional. Tell that to the Iraqis and Afghans and the people of Okinawa.......'

I don't think Obama is delusional. He opposed the Iraq disgrace but no US president will be able to truly question the need for a gargantuan military, the enormous arms industry and the disgusting body count resulting from failed 'interventions'. We can only hope that the US electorate will eventually get fed up of having their taxes wasted in this way in the coming decades. Until then, we'll keep hearing this crap.

I'm not an American, but would rather rely on the US than on China or Russia or Japan or Iran to be the world's policeman.

I'd rather not have any one country being the worlds policeman - especially when that country imprisons and tortures innocents without due process.

I'd much rather we have the UN or some other group made up of multiple nations acting as the world police.

The U.S. military budget is $756.4 billion for FY 2015, a gargantuan amount of money. Doesn't it make the world a whole lot safer..........“hooah”

Don't depend on the UN. Remember the UN forces that stood by and allowed genocide to happen in Africa. UN forces are often made up of troops sent from countries only for the purposes of peacekeeping but not to initiate fights. Try convincing those countries to put their soldiers in harm's way in causes they probably don't care much about - they have their own problems; the last thing they'd want to do is divert their resources for somebody else's problems.

'Maybe the Chinese can stop the fighting between the Sunnis and Shiites'

They wouldn't be stupid enough to even try. Being one of the oldest civilisations, the Chinese tend to take the long view of history.

Nathaw, who is going to defend greedy and morally corrupt Switzerland in the next big war? They surely won't be able to do it themselves. Don't see anything enviable about that. You all can hate on the U.S. if you want but I guarantee that when your country needs help, that will be the first place they turn to.

Bin Ladin was in Pakistan, last known photo op, and "Afghanistan, . . . It’s not going to be a source of terrorist attacks again.”?

"Since terrorists attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, victims’ loved ones, injured survivors, and members of the media have all tried without much success to discover the true nature of the relationship between the 19 hijackers – 15 of them Saudi nationals – and the Saudi Arabian government. Many news organizations reported that some of the terrorists were linked to the Saudi royals and that they even may have received financial support from them as well as from several mysterious, moneyed Saudi men living in San Diego."

Hi bass4funk - The UN is by no means a perfect organisation by any means, but its security council is the only globally recognized policy framework for the development, implementation of peace and the final and last forum before outright war. It is a work in progress. Through a body like the UN maybe one day the US won't need to commit such huge resources. An example is the proposed $350m lethal aid to Ukraine, President Putin is not above testing Nato's key Article 5 - an armed attack against one or more shall be considered an attack against all. The UN for all its faults could well prove itself invaluable in the near future to give Putin a opportunity to take a deep breath and step back from the brink.

Hi lostrune2 agreed at present the UN can really only provide limited assistance as a 'peacekeeper' in relation to troop deployment and only after consensus of agreement.

From a global perspectives to rely upon one nation to maintain 'world peace' for want of a more appropriate 'cliché' is fanciful and puts a tremendous finacial burden on its people.

The UN is an organisation that presents a possible alternative forum to build a more effective strategy for peace. It is certainly going to be put to the test in Eastern Europe.

Too bad the United States is not a better place because of our " Golfer in Chief ".

This is true, what Obama says. Nothing else would keep the Mongols and the Cossacks in their respective areas rather than spilling all over the place.

( Me ): "Dictator Saddam Hussein and his winsome sons and his cronies no longer running Iraq."

"And so now ISIS blooms there and there is still sporatic fighting between Sunnis and Shiites."

Hey, maybe the Chinese can stop the fighting between the Sunnis and Shiites, lol.

( Me ): "the Taliban no longer keeping girls from going to school"

"Now all the kids go to school and they all get killed in Pakistan. Is it better to be uneducated or dead?"

Really, all the Afghan kids get killed in Pakistan?

( Me ):"and giving sanctuary to the likes of Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan.."

"Right. Instead he gets sanctuary in Pakistan while the Taliban takes over swathes of Pakistan's territory...nuclear armed Pakistan!"

Um, he got nailed by the U.S. in Pakistan, remember? And maybe the Chinese can do something about the Taliban taking over swathes of Pakistan's territory, lol.

Hey, maybe the Chinese can stop the fighting between the Sunnis and Shiites, lol.

Because the US sure can't..LMAO.

Delusional. Tell that to the Iraqis and Afghans and the people of Okinawa.......

Actually, Serrano beat me to it.

I'd rather not have any one country being the worlds policeman - especially when that country imprisons and tortures innocents without due process.

Well, you and the rest of the world are way better off that the US IS the world police, because without us, if anything went wrong in the world, even if it's humanitarian in nature, Russia and China wouldn't be there, I guarantee you that. These are NOT giving nations historically and if there was NO US, the world would be up the creek, like it not that's just reality.

I'd much rather we have the UN or some other group made up of multiple nations acting as the world police.

ROFL! The UN can't even decide on the definition of what terrorism is and you think a hollow body entity that some of its members choose to look the other way when it comes to terrorism or how about acknowledging Israel's right to peacefully exist. Fat dream, fat chance, it will never happen. When the rest of the world can take care of itself and NOT rely on the US and yes, that includes China as well.

Switzerland does not need US or Russia troops in their home soil. It is the most peaceful and enviable place on that earth. Okinawa residents have never had joy and laughter for hosting US bases.

But at least they DO have freedom, thanks to the US.

They wouldn't be stupid enough to even try. Being one of the oldest civilisations, the Chinese tend to take the long view of history.

Another reason as to why if the US were NOT there and you have radical terrorism anywhere in the world, everyone would be screwed.

The U.S. military budget is $756.4 billion for FY 2015, a gargantuan amount of money. Doesn't it make the world a whole lot safer..........“hooah”

As long as the mainland and our natural interests are secure as well as our allies, then that is money well spent.
