Great. Just what we need... more security. I know, I know, "it's in every nation's interest".

another power grab.

What goods? We do not make anything.

Sure, many things are Made in China, used to be made in the USA but still many nice things are still being made in the good old USA and the China thing is not going to last for ever, America needs to get on the ball and start bringing many of these manufacturing jobs back to the USA.

@MabodofulsSpicy Westerners are very good at making logical or linguistic constructions such as microprocessor architectures, software, sales systems (itunes, macdonalds), and academic theories.
There seem to be cultural factors affecting attitudes to copyright of such constructions. Some of my students clearly copy others writing more than others, especially from a certain country. I don't think that they are sociopaths and they certainly don't see themselves in that way.
One can see patents/copyright as protecting the effort and creative endevour of the developers. But one can also see it as a sort of claiming colonialism of a 'terra nullis' patch in a finite symbolic space. One illustration of this is purchasing domain names. If I purchase chugokogo.com (I did in fact) and sell it to a Chinese language school for a lot of money then how much creativity or effort would I have sold? Or have I just claimed something that no one else was using and called it mine? Patents of inventions, such as one click to buy, or of a garbage icon, contain both creative endeavour and something I call "symbolic colonialism." Westerners tend to believe that the symbolic space is infinite, and that it is okay to claim something if one gets there first. Not everyone agrees.

Obama's Hollywood movies and cds???
This will revive the SOPA and PIPA in a heartbeat. The majority of the people will agree to it because it is in the nation best interest.
The country should be worried about famine, natural disasters, lack of jobs, lack of equate healthcare, and constitutional rights etc. because there are pre-existing laws that protects American goods overseas. It's called lobbyists and special interests groups that are hired by corporations. It's the job of the corporation to safe guard their own products not that of the tax payers since all American manufacture jobs are overseas. The ironic thing is Obama is protecting other nations jobs.

Is this socialism, capitalism or policing the world? Not real sure what is taking place here. Is the country saying no to war, but policing the world through border security (land, air, and sea) and goods/services (internet) security?

@Elbuda Mexicano
Don't you mean back to Mexico.

America is becoming less free all the time. More and more permits are needed for everything. More and more inspections and reports needed before things can get done. Costs go up, the size of government goes up, and every day more freedom is chipped away. Its all being done in the name of security.
SuperLib
Makes sense, but the devil is in the details.
KuYani
I like that, the devil and is tail. (Or I should say the devil on his tail) I bet this new policy all came about because of Iran. Mean one thing, WAR.
KuYani
As anybody tie in the natural desaster occuring around the globe?, to the bombs going off in the middle east region as yet, I guess not. But sometime soon they will.
Wurthington
All you have to do is look the list of S&P 500 companies and you'll realize that the USA has a lot to protect. Its a very impressive list.
LH10
obama and amerika scare me...they start wars
jforce
@KuYani: I think you may be right. Sounds like a path to a declaration of war on Iran to me, too. Or at least making it easy to do so, thus, the "supply chain .... AHEM Oil" will keep flowing as a result. @Elbuda: Agreed. @Mabodofu: exactly.
SuperLib
Yeah, without this the US cannot go in and steal Iranian oil. That's exactly what I was thinking after spending a considerable amount of time trying to find anything that I could link to Iran.
RushO'Hannity
smoot hawley all over again. it's madness. economic nationalism. the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
unreconstructed
maybe back in 2003 you could sound sophisticated (on Dailykos) and in the know , or whatever, by telling us you just know it's all about da oil but it's 2012 and even the dumbest Americans understand we got none of Iraq's oil. Obama recently told our nearest neighbor to sell the vast amounts they want to offer us to China instead. get a new schtick.

Many good comments. If any of you own stock in US corporations, now is a good time to double-up or fold your cards, depending on your view. As for this writer, I've already moved my equity investments away from that country. But, enough of analogies. It doesn't hurt to streamline international trade, considering the fact that we're all a part of it, but letting one country dictate terms for all others in the business of the planet is abrogating our own national and international interests. Let's hope other governments take Obama and his bamma-ramma down-your-throat freakish control to task. Otherwise...eech!
The Truth Matters
Nice to see you onboard. You are only 10 years late to the game. I wonder why it took you so long to see the light. Oh yeah, Obama's president now. I get it.

Right. Builders should have the right to put up buildings the cheapest way possible. Can the inspections. Who needs structural engineers adding more time and cost to the project? When the things collapse -- like they just did in Rio -- the free market will take care of everyone -- except those under the rubble of course.
Wolfpack
Here we go, whenever someone opposes oppressive regulations that means they are completely opposed to any and all regulation and that they hope people are killed and injured. Save it for your Karl Marx reading group.
yabits
The reason why regulations started coming about was, in fact, because people were being killed and injured. Conservatives wistfully talk about returning America to those "golden" times. Yes, there are some regulations that should be changed or abolished, but to decry proper regulations and inspections as a total loss of freedom is as immature as it is ludicrous.
And you know where you can stick it.

yabits Jan. 27, 2012 - 05:42AM JST. Right. Builders should have the right to put up buildings the cheapest way possible. Can the inspections. That structural costs imposed on U.S. manufacturers including regulation creates substantial cost disadvantage when compared with other major industrialized countries. The issue of cost disadvantage is important by making U.S. business less competitive with foreign industries. The U.S. business is overly regulated and the question of why such regulation is needed in the first place. The free market economic system depends on the exercise of ethical behavior by corporate officials.
SuperLib
There has to be balance... No one wants a train crash like the one in China or collapsing buildings like the ones in Rio. On the other hand business needs to be able to compete.
lucabrasi
You say that like it's a bad thing.
I reckon the majority of us (outside the USA at least) would be on Obama's side, something the GOP seem literally unable to comprehend. Jesus was a socialist, goddamit!
