White House talks fail to end government shutdown

If the borrowing limit is not lifted by the middle of the month, the U.S. government could default on its debts for the first time in history.

Really? If every year I told I told my creditors I would pay them back next year, I am pretty sure I would not be afforded such generosity of speech.

I have said this before, but its truly the military that is draining America, and if you don't realize this you just are not paying attention to U.S. military expenditure.

And America knows who is to blame: the Republicans.

@JTDanMan--The Republicans are responsible for bringing things to a head. But the feet, legs, trunk, arms and shoulders of the debt crisis belong to most all current and recent Congressmen, and their vested interests/lobbyists. They all need to be thrown out, a great lot need to have their ill gotten gains returned to the government, and we need to start from scratch with decent politicians.

Why should he? With ObamaCare, 30 million Americans that Republicans couldn't give a toss about will be able to get health insurance. 

Why Republicans hate the idea of universal healthcare I have no idea, but while they continue their war against Americans, it'a worth pointing out that there are 30 TeaPublicans who are holding not just the US economy but potentially the global economy hostage - over ObamaCare, and very likely, again, over raising the debt limit. 

But let's look at the facts: how many times did Republicans vote to raise the debt limit under GWB?

17 times. 

Now, when they claim to want to lower much of the debt they themselves created under GWB's reign of error, they flip out and mutiny. 

What's up with that??

What's there to negotiate? The ACA is a law. You can't have some of the law or part of the law, it's either there or it's not. The Republican demand is to erase Obamacare and in exchange they'll allow the government to function.

I do not want to be cynical, but the death toll from terrorism in the US is far, very far less than the deaths due to improper medicare. The selfish high wealth people and old fashioned cowboys are disgusting. And more disgusting when they hold these "charity" events just for business networking.

Delay a law that has been passed by both houses? Why? This is ransom.

Mr. R and Mr. D are stranded on a life raft with one box of rations. Mr. R produces and awl and says, "Let's commence negotiations. I get all of the rations, and in return, I will not punch a hole in the raft."

Mr. D demurs, saying, "This is not negotiation! You end up with all: a functional raft and the rations!", whereupon Mr. R punctures the raft.

Slowly sinking, the two realize there is a repair kit, but that it will take their cooperation to operate. Mr. R now produces a hacksaw and says, "If you'll just compromise by giving me all of the rations, I'll both help you patch the leak and refrain from sawing this raft in half."

That is the state of "negotiations" with the GOP.

I wonder how Fox "news" will report on the moderate mutiny that is brewing within the Republican party....

Obama, of course, if right. And America knows who is to blame:

It's the military plus entitlement spending. It's not just one or the other.

When the government goes from dysfunction to nonfunction there is a problem.

Remember the sequester! Now is the 18th U.S. government shut down. They all play their ball games thus pointing finger to one another; forgetting that three other fingers are pointing to themselves. Regardless, the tax payers will pay for all these in generation to come. Senator Obama said that raising the debt ceiling is unpatriotic, and now he is doing just that. Deficit what? these politicians have plenty money to burn and have plenty followers who will pay the rising debt ceiling. For the bottom fish, there are "lol". Cheers & Kumbaya.

There is no "if".

After failing epically to achieve their stated goal of making Obama "a one term president", this is what you get from the American Taliban in opposition. May they be further relegated to irrelevance for this ridiculous stunt.

One learns a lot about one's fellow man in times of crises, his empathy and devotion, his righteousness and his means to his ends.

This shutdown is not anything like the previous shutdowns. Most shutdowns were procedural issues on the budget and lasted only a day or two. The government also didn't really shutdown. The 1995 shutdown was about the budget and there were things to negotiate on both sides. This shutdown is purely political and is costing $200,000,000/day. I don't see this ending anytime soon and it may even go all the way to the debt ceiling. The question is will they actually default? BTW, slavery is back in the USA, essential federal worker are "forced" to work for free since they are not getting paid.

No matter who is the president, nor republicans or democrats - these are some of the most arrogant people alive on the planet. They are playing games with the world's economic stability for their own ends. They will find a deal at the final hour - just like last time, and after they have manipulated markets just how they want and sent billions of dollars into their own pockets - effectively stolen from tax payers

It's time to perform a colonoscopy on the American government to get their heads out of their butts! Seriously, this is not good. And worst of all, my Armed Forces TV (AFN Television Satellite broadcast) has been cut since it takes a government agency to run it. I would say "I'm leaving!", but I already live far from America, can't get much farther than where I'm at (Japan). Geez already! Somebody do something!!!

While I can agree that insurance reform is needed here in the U.S., they wa that the ACA was passed (middle of the night, Party Line Vote, no one read it before passing it), and the sheer incompetence of the Launch combined with many of the reports that I have been seeing of insane raises in costs, tells me to scrap it and start over with a very open and public debate on the types of reforms needed to help lower costs all around.

Basically the Republicans are begging the President to help them save face. Which I guess makes a ton of political sense. They'll likely get concessions on some things from the President in other areas, but he has to let them stew in this. Indeed the Presidents' actions are now to preserve the office of the presidency for the next President. It is who can do what for whom and who will fund your next election and who can you support with your vote so they will support you when you need to call in a favor.

The president warned it would set a terrible precedent to allow lawmakers of any party to hold a White House to ransom over raising the debt ceiling.

US constituion has limited US debt ceiling will not go beyond more than 16 trillions. However that limit has alreay exceeded back in 2011. White House should be accountable for new generation who will never be able to repay the debt. President has no right to morgage the future generation for unaffordable health policy. Unlike Canada and Australia, US is heavily populated with more than 300 millions.

I am not sure if this is a real threat to the economy. I do believe however that it is a threat to the hot air that is improperly inflating the image of the economy. I would rather stick with rock solid stable economy and dispense with the hot air. The image of government should not have so much effect on the reality of business.

Probably cause we had a media that the 2000 Presidential election, for example, accused Bush of trying to "talk down the economy" so as to better his chances of winning.

The president has his loyal followers. Wonder why he did not promote the credible MSNBC while bashing Fox news.

Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi are to blame. They passed the ObamaCare entitlement on a party line vote - of course Republicans do not support it. All Obama has to do now is to delay the individual mandate for a year and give individuals the same special deal that he gave big corporations, make Congress obey the law as written and submit to the exchanges without a subsidy that those in the private sector and unions would get for "cadillac" health plans, and revoke the tax on medical devices such as hearing aids and dialysis machines for little children. Obama has made so many exemptions from his health care law that he has half repealed it all by himself!

If he can bring himself to get off his socialist high horse for a minute he can save himself and the country from ruin. He can still keep his "legacy" health care program but would actually be forced to take some input from the opposing party instead of foisting an entitlement on the country without bipartisan support for the first time in American history.

The special break for members of Congress is the most galling of all of Obama's special exemptions from his own law. The unions are doing their up most to get the same special exemption as the Congress and their staff but Obama has had to say no because even he realizes it would be financially untenable.

When Republicans pass legislation to re-open government one piece at a time and the Senate and White House refuse to do so, American's will understand who is truly to blame.

JTDanMan- the last election result was a shock to me. Would voter ID have had a part? How about the 17yo son of a guy I know who's son was mysteriously registered Democrat. How about the Black Paanthers, did they intimidate in 2012 as in 2008?

There are no absolute laws in America, and more than one federal program has been shut down or defunded in the past. Many of the republicans who are fighting against the ACA were elected or reelected in the last election specifically because they promised to stop or repeal Obamacare. As such, they are merely doing what they said they would do.

Obama is required by law to pass a budget each and every year which outlines his spending plans. He has not passed a single budget during his presidency. This allows him to spend as much as he likes. To be fair, Bush resorted to the same thing, but that doesn't make it right.

Obama has spent more of our money during his presidency than all previous presidents combined, this is a big concern. How much more money will he spend over the next three years? It is time to take his credit card away and put him on a budget. A default now would be painful, a default three years from now with a far larger debt would be even more painful.

There will be no default, Obama is too weak to resist, and even if the republicans are at fault, he is the one who is responsible in the end, as he is in charge.
