Barbaric.

Oh for the love of god just bring back the firing squad then! If you are running out of drugs to use because of lack of supply than at least use something that is proven to work and won't cause this type of suffering.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

Sounds like someone really wanted to do some human testing and was sitting back taking notes. In spite of the barbarity, his victim didn't get to die nicely either.

18 ( +20 / -2 )

I have no pity for murderers and rapists.

15 ( +25 / -11 )

Doubt the experience was as painful as what his innocent victim went through when she was brutally raped and murdered.

12 ( +19 / -7 )

the_sheriff

I have no pity for them either, but killing them purely for punishment is still not rational (not to mention it's cruel and unusual no matter how you do it) and runs contrary to purpose of the penal system which is to rehabilitate for reintroduction to society.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

So..who's next?

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

reading this I remembered the movie "Law Abiding Citizen". Which I can recommend btw.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Oooooh, Poor POS...too BAD. Whhaaaah. GOOD !

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

This wouldn't turn stomachs or raise too many eyebrows in many countries who execute people. Unfortunately, those countries tend to be theocracies run by crackpots, thuggish dictatorships or banana republics. The people of Ohio should take a long look at the company it has been keeping since 1999. While they continue to execute people, at least do it without gratifying the baser instincts of some who would no doubt like to see this kind of execution introduced as the norm.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Ohio could have asked the Army's chemical warfare division for the drugs needed to terminate him quicker though personall I believe it should have taken more suffering on his part to die the way he commited the murder.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

It's hard to have sympathy for the suffering of a murderer, but surely the state should not be administering death in a way comparable to the way criminals kill their victims, should they?

I don't think it's right. It's not the hallmark of a civilized society.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

If you had a bad, mad dog that just had to go, would you kill it in this manner or would you do something swift and merciful?

So, how should humans be executed?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

killing them purely for punishment is still not rational (not to mention it's cruel and unusual no matter how you do it) and runs contrary to purpose of the penal system which is to rehabilitate for reintroduction to society.

Easy to say on the outside looking in if you have never experienced someone close to you brutally murdered.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

I have no pity for murderers and rapists.

I tend to agree. NO one told this guy and others like him to do it. He had a choice, all these creeps have a choice and if you force someone to sexually do what YOU want to do for your own self gratification then you should be man enough to suffer the consequences for those actions.

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

I believe in retributive justice especially for murderers.

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

Let him burn in hell for all of eternity!!!

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

I don't think it's right. It's not the hallmark of a civilized society.

Just because many live in cities, it doesn't mean we're civilized, as a society. That's a long way off. A civilized society will have no murder and rape.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Call it Karma for the person he killed I'm sure suffered longer before she and her unborn child were killed.

Why should properly convicted criminals have rights. Where are the rights of the victims? No one asks to be picked out of the crowd, raped and killed.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

man if you going to kill somebody quickly why not a well placed bullet to the brain, yes a little messy but quick and painless. very few people have lived to tell if a bullet to the brain is painfull

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I got the following quote from huffington post comment:

I am a trained nurse anesthetist. What they are describing occurs with patients are going to sleep or are heavily sedated with the combination of drugs indicated. They perhaps underestimated the amount needed for his weight for seeing the breathing ceased quicker, but there was no pain involved in this with that combination of drugs. The man also was either in a dreamy state or completely unaware very quickly, but the yawning and snorting probably occurred due to the affects of the drugs taking affect. Yawning is not painful for the individual and the snorting was due to the muscles relaxing from the medications while respiratory efforts were continuing. It would not be an indication of pain or awareness. Breathing is a reflex which is deeply seated and the drive continues, obviously, after consciousness is lost.

I wonder if there is any truth to the above quote.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Good that bastard deserved it. Personally I think we should go back to public hangings.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

The system that did this is no different from the murderer himself. Do away with the death penalty already.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Just shoot them in the head and done! Why waste so much money in a "Humane" killing! It is killing...he will die...make it short and quick for him, low cost for tax payers.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

too many eyebrows in many countries who execute people. Unfortunately, those countries tend to be theocracies run by crackpots, thuggish dictatorships or banana republics.

Japan executes people and I don't think that description fits Japan. It may have been painful for him, but he did rape and kill someone. His family wants to sue, go ahead, as long as the settlement amount goes to the victims family.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Maybe let them choose the drug they want to die with? Cause I could think of a few.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

The victim is still the one to be thought of here NOT the criminal. He needed to pay for his actions...He caused so much pain and agony to many people. Screw him. He got just a bit of what he deserved...I wish he would have suffered more.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

AlphaApe: "It may have been painful for him, but he did rape and kill someone."

Ah, the old "eye-for-an-eye" mentality. So, then, Alpha, who is going to kill the executioner? He did murder someone, after all. Don't get me wrong, while it's a shame the man suffered I am not on his side at all, save that I'm against his execution, but you guys really don't get that the execution of this man is no different than the murder he committed in terms of ending a human life willingly.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

@Alphaape I did say 'tend'. Just to clarify my point, here's a list of the most enthusiastic executioners by number from 2010: China, Iran, North Korea, Yemen, USA, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Syria, Bangladesh and Somalia. Not a very pleasant club to be a member of.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Hanging is too good for them?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

put McGuire to death for the 1989 rape and fatal stabbing of a pregnant newlywed, Joy Stewart.

Not one for the death penalty but you know, I have a hard time feeling "sorry" for this guy. As he was given painkillers, it seems it didn't hurt though perhaps felt terrororized while dying. Much like his victim I assume.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

The system that did this is no different from the murderer himself.

No. The difference is that the 'system' killed a guilty person and the murderer killed an innocent person. For or against the death penalty, that strikes me as a pretty big difference.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Bring back the firing squad. The medical profession should never be used for the purpose of killing people. And in a country awash with guns it is almost cynical that you would not use them for the purpose they are designed for.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The system that did this is no different from the murderer himself. Do away with the death penalty already.

Usually on this topic, I would agree you, but people like that never learn. He did the crime, he was sentenced and he paid the ultimate price. How about this, look at that murderer in Norway that shot up all those people, have you seen his prison?? That's another end of the extreme, but what else should we do with these people? Seems like our prisons around the world are getting more and more and more psycho people!

What's the solution then?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

As if we understand enough about death to make it a punishment....

3 ( +5 / -2 )

While there is room for error in executing the innocent, I oppose capital punishment. (Much as I find it hard to find sympathy for a murderer and rapist)

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

WTF is wrong with people? If you absolutely MUST execute them, why not just give them a bottle of pills, and a bottle of whiskey. Then while they're passed out, simply drag them in and put a bullet in their head.

The ONLY reason they DON'T execute people like this is because the state NEEDS to flex its power to the citizens, by making the execution as BARBARIC LOOKING as possible.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

the execution of this man is no different than the murder he committed in terms of ending a human life willingly.

Oh, I think it is quite different. A 'pregnant newlywed' was 'raped and stabbed' at random, without having done anything to have deserved such a death. For it to have been no different this man would also have had to have been innocent and have been raped and stabbed with no foreknowledge that it was going to happen. I'm not a huge fan of the death penalty but presumably he knew that would be a possibility if he was caught after committing this crime in that state. Not only that but he tried to pin it on his brother-in-law first with no thought for the punishment that the brother-in-law might receive. 'Terror and agony'? He got off lightly in my opinion.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

DaDude

Easy to say on the outside looking in if you have never experienced someone close to you brutally murdered.

So being emotionally affected by a case because of you familiarity with the victim is a valid reason to accept/support capital punishment despite it's immoral and irrational nature? So in other words we execute criminals purely to provide the victims' family and friends with a sense of vengeance? Because that's all you're left with when you kill a person for committing a crime, any crime.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

when he started struggling, they should have slit his throat. That's what he did to the victim (besides multiple stabbings, oral rape and sodomy)

the guy was given a mixture of powerful sedative and painkiller, but yet the media is masquerading his terrible "agony". he chose to murder and rape in the wrong country. if she would have chosen Europe, now his "agony" would be which TV channel to watch or what menu to choose from in his comfy prison cell. with his lawyer probably complaining about the quality of the air conditioner. and back on the streets after 5 years to find some more young meat

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

If he would have chosen Europe, now his "agony" would be which TV channel to watch or what menu to choose from in his comfy prison cell.

So why are rapes so common in the States when compared with almost any European country? (Three times the rate in Germany and Holland, almost four times the rate in Switzerland, eight times the rate in Spain.)

Looks to me like the European nations have it right...

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Lucabrasi, China has the same murder rate (1.0) with Western Europe, Japan has a much lower one (0.3). Yet, both have the capital punishment. East Europe has a high rate (6.4), raising the murder rate of Europe overall at 3.5, and only Belarus has the capital punishment. In US the murder rate has 4.6.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

“All citizens have a right to expect that they will not be treated or punished in a cruel and unusual way,” Rion said. “Today’s actions violated that constitutional expectation.”

He didn't think about that while he raped and murdered a pregnant woman. He thought nothing of the suffering he put two human beings through. The pain, the torture and then snuffed their lives out.

He has paid with his life. And in a way that few will feel sympathy for.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Personally I would skip the sedative and make the punishment fit the crime - let him suffer as much as possible while his light is extinguished. His victims and their families were given no consideration by this animal.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

This is animal cruelty.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

These prisoners are ANIMALS, no one should ever trust these fools who thought it would be cool or funny to rape, kill etc...innocent women and children. Time for the USA to use GUNS, good old machine guns and use these animals on death row as a way to improve our information about what M-16s etc...can do. It is highly hypocritical of the USA not to use our best guns, hand grenades etc..on all of these evil monsters on death row or who will be on death row, they only get worse behind bars, so we should stop wasting our time and $$ and get if over with and yes may this evil bastard killer of a pregnant woman and unborn baby, let the killer burn in hell!!

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Sounds great to me, this method works perfectly fine, I hope the killer suffered more than his victim.

No mercy should be given to these not people.

Use this method more often.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Sounds like a version of the execution in "Green Mile". A grotesque, successful, barbaric execution.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Hope that will never happen again. It just take too long to kill him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not only did McGuire kill a 22 yr old female after raping her, he killed her unborn child as well. Then the cops were trying to pin the murder on the husband, so he committed suicide. This POS wiped out an entire family and people are worried that he had to suffer a little bit?

Personally, I'm more a fan of the Bolivian folk remedy for a rapist/murderer: bury him alive with his victim. A sure guarantee he won't do it again.

RR

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

His victim would have been happy to see that.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Déjà vu againJAN. 18, 2014 - 12:29AM JST His victim would have been happy to see that.

Your comment is a projection.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Having seen a number of people die in hospital of natural causes, i must say n ot all of us will end life with a peaceful death.

Not really worried today if some convicted murderer has a few minutes of distress on his final exit.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Ehh. If you rape and stab to death a pregnant woman, 20 minutes of suffering is way too short. The victim's family should sue the state for making his death too swift.

The death row inmate’s lawyers argued McGuire was mentally, physically and sexually abused as a child and had impaired brain function that made him prone to act impulsively.

An attorney for McGuire’s family said it plans to sue the state over what happened.

Sue over what happened? Are they talking about the mental, physical, and sexual abuse the perp received as a child? This will be an interesting battle between the murderer's attorney and the family's attorney. ONE of the two is lying through their teeth.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Fizzbits comment sums it all up for the nay-sayers of the death penalty in the case of heinous crimes. A civilized society would not have criminal acts like this in the first place. Can't create something out of nothing...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

(Please no brain-dead cries of "What about what he did to the girl!")

I'd like for you to say that to the relatives of the victim. Wait, her husband killed himself over his being suspected of doing the crime when in fact this killer did it. So you can't say that to him. But ,if it were an American soldier who shot some kid in a village during wartime, you would probably be the first in the pack calling for him to face a simiar demise.

A civilized society will have no murder and rape.

In a utopia maybe, but we are all animals and we kill. From our earliest beginnings whether you believe in the Bible or any other religion, man has killed man. Sometimes in war for the state, other times for personal gain as in crime or vengence. What we can do as a society is try not to promote it as a way of solving conflict, but we must also use it in certain cases as the most severe punishment, in my opinion.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Oh my god! Im afraid to say this RR?? Bassfunk?? We agree on the death penalty??? And vey sorry, but my guess Smith one fine dat will see the light??Ah yes and may this dirty evil bastard in Ohio burn and burn in hell!!

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Has anyone here said they feel sorry for him? Accusing people of sympathy for a killer like this is to use one of the biggest, wildest, most desperate strawman arguments in the history of human discourse.

Those of us against the DP are concerned about what the DP means for the rest of us. There are many in society who get a thrill out of barbaric executions. Those types tend to call for public hanging. We don't want to encourage those people or give them their jollies. When the state sanctions killing for wrongs, it encourages killing among the populace for wrongs they perceive. Its a really bad example. It generally makes light of killing. It ignores the fact that innocent people will get executed, people who could have been released from a sentence of life in prison. It ignores the fact that executions are not carried out evenly, but its minorities, poor people and those of diminished capacity who the state tends to murder in return for murder. And that encourages further discrimination.

Also it puts surviving friends and relatives (the less bloodthirsty among them anyway) in a position of reliving their pain, and seeing yet another person die. If anyone is going to feel sympathy for a killer, its them, particularly if they believe the killer is sorry and has changed, or has gotten the mental help he or she needed. (Come on, how many of these killers do you really think is completely sane?)

If anyone here feels sorry for this killer, then say so now and the argument can applied to them. But when DP advocates arrive in droves and indicate that the only reason they can think of for us to be against the DP is sympathy for the killer, despite all the reasons I and other indicated, it indicates to me that droves of DP advocates are a bit low in the IQ rating.

Like Japan?

Right, like Japan then. Ohio certainly does keep excellent company then.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

I have been looking into the details of the case for two reasons. One was because I thought maybe he did not know she was pregnant, and two was because of the claim that her husband committed suicide for being a suspect in the crime.

What I found was that she was 8 months pregnant, so this vile creature knew.

And while I know that Kenny Stewart committed suicide before the trial, I cannot find a reason. I cannot rule out the reason stated though. In fact, what I did find did seem to tip-toe around facts that would show a reason of being a suspect, as if the authorities did not want to admit their screw up. For example, McGuire was arrested on an unrelated offense, but started talking about the murder. It does not say when, like if it was years or days after the murder. I did find that DNA evidence ruled out Kenny as a suspect, but that was in 1992. I cannot find when Kenny killed himself exactly.

On the other hand, McGuire tried to blame his brother in law (not Kenny). Might it be that that fact has been mixed up, and somebody thought it was Kenny being blamed? I don't know. Anybody?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Deplore, holding up an exception like Japan as being the norm is like saying Charles Manson is a typical American man. Also, get yourself a dictionary and look up the meaning of "tend to".

1 ( +2 / -1 )

How about the guillotine wich is quick and the results are the same.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Jack, my guess is the guillotine sounds too scary?? Barbaric?? To the anti death penalty folk here on JT, but if that is gonna make some idiot fools stop raping, stealing and killing others?? Maybe it is tine for more drastic solutions!!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Elbuda Mexicano

...but if that is gonna make some idiot fools stop raping, stealing and killing others??

You really think the death penalty prevents ny criminals from committing violent crimes like rape and murder, 99% of which are crimes of passion? Get a grip. To posit that the execution of criminals (often years, nay, decades after the crime) have any effect, other than by coincidence, on the rate of violent crimes in any given year is idiotic at best.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

To the anti death penalty folk here on JT, but if that is gonna make some idiot fools stop raping, stealing and killing others?

The death penalty has no deterrent effect at all.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

The death penalty has no deterrent effect at all.

It's never been considered a deterrent. It is a way to remove a person that instead of contributing in a healthy way to society, focuses on their own depraved or violent thoughts that cost the lives of others and they show no signs of stopping if they were allowed to do it again.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

HonestDictator

It's never been considered a deterrent.

That's pretty amuzing, especially when proponents have said exactly that in several preceding posts. It's very sad too, since deterrence, although still an unrealistic and therefore invalid, is the only argument for the death penalty that has any actual ethical merit.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

It is a way to remove a person that instead of contributing in a healthy way to society

That's what prison is for. The death penalty is all about violent retribution, blood vengeance. You don't have to look any further than this very comment thread to see that's why people support it.

And that's exactly why it should be banned.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Deplore, holding up an exception like Japan as being the norm

I see, so Japan is an exception but the United States isn't. Clearly you're dealing with bias issues.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Deplore

It doesn't matter which countries employ capital punishment and which don't. Capital punishment is unethical and irrational on its own merits. A sense of false justice attained by survivors through vengeance is not a valid reason to commit state-sponsored murder.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Based on the crime he was sentenced to die for, who cares how long it took, how painful it was or how much "terror" he experienced?

RR

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

RR

...who cares how long it took, how painful it was or how much "terror" he experienced?

Who cares you say? I'll tell you who doesn't care, people who believe two wrongs make a right.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

the execution medical team

Disgraceful. These "medical" personnel should have their titles and degrees stripped for this.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Sorry, but if you do give the death penalty to these crazy rapist homicidal lunatics, will they be getting out on probation or escaping from prison any time soon?? Hell no! They will be dead, real dead, no zombies no Hollywood movie BS! This crime happened in the USA up in Ohio, ok. But for example in MEXICO we do not have the death penalty for scums like this criminal in Ohio. What happens to scum like this rapist in Mexico?? They can $$ bribe their way out of prison for a few hours, find out where the relatives of the victim live etc..go and rape them too then kill them then wash their hands and Waltz back into prison, jail in Mexico and tell everyone, "Hey! I was behind bars, so it is impossible to pin those crimes on me, etc.." Do we want the USA to become like that?? Or here in Japan, for criminal bastards to actually get away with rape and murder?? As for me, I thank god, etc..that JAPAN does have the death penalty, just a shame it is not used more like in China!
