zichiJune 8 01:30 am JSTMillions gave their lives fighting Nazi fascism. We need to remain on our guard, daily.

There was fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Japan.

And now it's engulfed the U.S.A. Very sad indeed.

sorry Churchill statue

Ptownsend:

Today some 'westerners', perhaps even some great-grandchildren of the men who fought, are trying to undermine 'western' democracies and have them replaced by authoritarian systems which are based on principles similar to the national socialist's their ancestors fought against.

You mean the rioting, violent crowd of so-called "protesters" who just vandalized the Church statue in London? Maybe we agree on something.

Until then it's just name-calling.

Orchestrating chaos. Inciting riots. Vandalizing. Physically attacking their target. Well funded and organized. Sure sounds like a bunch of Brown shirts to me.

You must be speaking of ANTIFA right?

It's clear that 'fascism' is an ugly term. But odd that those literally fighting against fascism like ANTIFA are called that name, especially by those favoring authoritarian systems led by someone pushing for a system more akin to what those who fought at Normandy fought against. If ANTIFA is ever led by an authoritarian pushing race-based nationalism while controlling industry, they probably could be called fascist. Until then it's just name-calling.

It's so sad that these soldiers fought against fascism in Europe and now fascism rules in the U.S.A. And some of these vets are still alive to witness it today. Vain and tragic.

The fight against fascism continues. We remember those brave men and women who laid down their lives to stop its halt.

And yet, you would likely label all of those men and women fascists in the same breath because of their views.

I agree with Shinji. If they could have seen what the world has become, they wouldn't have bothered.

Wasn't getting rid of fascism what Drew Brees' grandparents were fighting for? The ideas symbolized by the flag and written in the Constitution. Guess it's all just trash now...

If they could see how Western countries are today I wonder how many would have not bother fighting.

The sadness is almost too much, because there is no one," said local guide Adeline James. “Plus you have their stories. The history is sad and it’s even more overwhelming now between the weather, the (virus) situation and, and, and.”

OK, I get it, the local tour guide is sad because the virus is stopping the crowds and festivities. Hardly a reason to use this in the headline IMO. Other versions of this same story being sold around the net use the word “loneliness”, which is more fitting, for the tour guides that is.

David Pottier still went out to raise American flags in the Calvados village of Mosles, population 356

Thank you David Pottier. I doubt David is feeling sad or lonely.

Fine, fine soldiers. Let's never take for granted the sacrifices they made for us.

RIP

Some 160,000 soldiers made the perilous crossing from England that day in atrocious conditions, storming dunes which they knew were heavily defended by German troops determined to hold their positions.

I doubt the modern world has seen greater bravery and sacrifice than what was seen on the Normandy beaches, among other places, including Stalingrad, in the fight to halt the evils of fascism. Today some 'westerners', perhaps even some great-grandchildren of the men who fought, are trying to undermine 'western' democracies and have them replaced by authoritarian systems which are based on principles similar to the national socialist's their ancestors fought against.
