I still want to know who the other 225 groups were, how many total "tea party" type applications there were so we can see what percent 75 is of the total, if any left leaning groups with the word "patriot" were scrutinized, if the IRA self reported, etc.

Lots of questions.

I'm curious also, how many left wing groups applied for, and received tax exempt status, without difficulty.

The numbers are still coming together obviously but there was an article in the Washington Post listing the names of 3 or 4 liberal groups that had been harassed -- while applications with Patriot, tea party, 9/12 or "educating about the Consititution" etc in their names were set aside by the hundreds. All the senators who wrote the IRS requesting Commissioner Shulman to dig into the activities of 501(c)(4) groups involved in political activity were also Democrats. The rationale that the agency was forced to "triage" requests due to a surge in applications has likewise been satisfactorily debunked.

The Internal Revenue Service acknowledged last week that in 2010 employees subjected conservative groups, including those with “Tea Party” and “Patriots” in their names, to increased scrutiny when they applied for non-profit status.

IRS abuse of power is as old as the IRS itself, regardless of who occupies the residence at Pennsylvania Avenue.

Here is a brief(incomplete) summary, to put things in perspective: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324715704578482823301630836.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_LEADTop

Beyond statistic, The IRS itself acknowledged the grave mistake (crime!) and sent the apology letters to the victims of this intimidation. Allegedly speaking, the white house council knew of these activities since 2010 before Obama reelection. He or she should inform the president of this potential criminal act. Otherwise, it seemed like an intentional orchestrated attacks on selected group of Americans for certain political agenda. Why the IRS chief as the manager did not know who did it? hiding anything?...Well, no more stone walling and get to the bottom of this that it will not happen again regardless any political affiliation. If crime committed, criminal(s) should go to to jail according to the law.

Just have to say at least Its a good thing that the IRS didn't target any muslim political activist groups for the extra harassment by them. Now that have been going way, way over the line and would have really gotten some anger boiling by the politically correct dominated activist media to get at those responsible and dig to how far up this leads.

Since this is centered on the Tea party and conservatives, groups the media never cared for in the first place not so much a huge outrage that the IRS did this targeting but instead doing a lot of damage control to help explain that the republicans are really, really trying to use this to their advantage to make Obama look bad.

And, while he acknowledged the excess scrutiny was “inappropriate,” he stressed that: “It’s my belief that what happened here wasn’t illegal.”

Statements like this are beyond belief. Shall we all simply 'suspend disbeleif'? Steven Miller - like so many in government today - are Leftist activists posing as public officials. They are the reason why groups like the Tea Party exist today. It is no accident that the IRS went after public interest groups that promote small government. The very idea of Constitutionally limited government is abhorant to these people. The Left - led by the main stream media - recognized that small government groups were a threat to their ideology from the get-go and have done everything in their power to destroy them. No power is greater than the Federal government for use in this aim.

Miller would like to say the wrong doing is confined to a few low level staffers at a single mid-West IRS office. It was only a matter of days that it was discovered that the issue began before the 2010 mid-term elections and involved individuals or groups of individuals in at least three different IRS offices spread out from one end of the country to the other.

So the IRS was essentially used to stunt the political activities of the Right over two election cycles while in no way impeding the Left's efforts. This crime has Democrat party politics written all over it. The only question is how high up does it go? It should surprise no one if one of Saul Alynsky's most famous proteges was involved from the start.

Tea Party is a group within Republican Party in USA. They are ultra conservative (American type). Thy just push their ideology and many elected officials fraternize with them to be elected. There was time FBI could not crack Mafia, So, IRS used tax codes to crack them. Al Capone? Many Chicago Mafias, It is a very tough USA Agency for anyone. TTea Party. If it was not cracked down, now, you never can tell when is your turn to be the target of you.

Discrimination against law abiding Americans within the EPA and IRS are clear violations of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection clause. And what is even more chilling the pattern is no doubt being repeated at every other agency that performs any kind of regulatory or enforcement function (Justice Dept. for sure).

The obvious solution is to repeal the Income Tax AND eliminate the IRS altogether.
