Japan's favorite man to hate (Captain Paul Watson) has been making the same statements for many years now. But in this case I am part of the problem as I too love Tuna. Since Tuna are an international creature it is going to be difficult at best to protect them. I fear that tuna may go the way of Beluga caviar, black market only.

Human greed and stupidity will deprive future generations of tuna. It may even happen in my time.

If we stop eating Tuna(no more Tuna-mayo, Tuna macaroni, Pizza topping, etc) we will have to replace it with some other fish(food) source. Any suggestion as to which fish species we could use?
The whole world loves their Tuna. I can't think of a household that don't stock a few tins of Tuna flakes(Vegetarians and vegans of course don't).
Tuna is deeply entrenched in a lot of the worlds cuisines.
Solution? I can't think of any besides cutting our personal tuna consumption.

Unagi are already over the brink. Wonder which fish will be next.

"a 269 kilogram fish..."
That's a whale, isn't it?
"...went for a record 56.49 million yen"
Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

How about cloning tuna and eating that instead?

Tuna are notoriously difficult to raise in captivity. Cloning instead of using ordinary fertilised eggs would be adding one more level of difficulty for no added benefit.
The answer's easy - just don't eat tuna.
