Trying to keep the US out of any regional alliance,

I never said the US wouldn't be part of it, just that others need to take the lead for optics. Japan, SK, Philippines are already in defense agreements with the US.

I wish I had your confidence about Trump not being elected.

I live in the middle of a red county, in a red state, and 60% of the people here think any democrat is worth than death. I'll be voting for anyone else but Trump. I won't vote for dysfunctional liars.

Most business people like Trump for rolling back govt regulations, but they know he is morally corrupt. Then there are the highly religious people who are ok with the death penalty, electing a convicted rapist and convicted fraudster, but aren't ok with abortion. The hypocrisy is huge around here. I'm only 1 vote and I will cast it.

Defense agreements aren't for piddly things like border disagreements, provided shelling and tanks haven't happened. Heck, the US and Canada have a few border disagreements with each other today. The idea of shooting any Canadian over it is completely ludicrous. I hope the Canadians feel the same about Americans on the border too. A few towns straddle that border. Before 2001, they mixed fully across the border in all levels of life - work, school, religion, entertainment, hobbies, shopping.

They need the initiative to make it happen rather than waiting for someone else. Also, the US taxpayer doesn't want to get stuck paying more than everyone else in the organization for this. It makes sense for Japan, SK, and Australia to be the leaders.

Trying to keep the US out of any regional alliance, is because China figures it can handle all the others, even together, but if the US is included it destroys their plans and ambitions because with the US in the regional alliance, China cant win.

China has no fear of any other nation right now, except the USA. Russia is in China's pocket, as is NK and Myanmar. The one nation that keeps checking China and its ambitions for world dominance is the USA and its alliances. Without those alliances China would dominate everyone and simply leave the US alone until it felt it could even take them on one on one.

Sorry China, your not going to separate us, only Trump can destroy the US alliances. Let hope the American voters are smart enough to keep Trump from office.

The US isn't the world police. Freedom of navigation is just that - to show freedom of navigation. Until China sinks a ship that has a large enough impact for trade, the US shouldn't get involved.

Countries need to look after themselves, until there isn't any other choice. Haven't we learned that already? Ukraine isn't part of NATO and they are feeling the ramifications for that.

Other countries need to look closely and make their own choices about being bullied. If you don't want that, then create and join military defense groups. It is 20 yrs passed time for their to be an SEPTO for all SE Asian countries to join who don't want to be bullied by China. They need the initiative to make it happen rather than waiting for someone else. Also, the US taxpayer doesn't want to get stuck paying more than everyone else in the organization for this. It makes sense for Japan, SK, and Australia to be the leaders.

As much as I like the Kiwis, they've been a little too nice towards China the last few years. Anyway, members should decide who gains entry and they need to have clear "fair" rules for membership qualifications.

I'd rather not have NATO fully overlap membership, since that could be seen as provocation by the bullies.

There's doing what's right and there's doing what you can get away with. Guess which is the Russian and Chinese and NK method? There's only 1 answer.

The nonsense is a dozen PI marines trying to hold out on a rusty hulk of a former US navy ship.

Maybe try resupplying with a submarine or something next time. Cat and mouse. We know which country is the cat.

leaving only the Turks and Hungarians left as a rump NATO.

This could also work. Good to have options.

Need an Asian NATO to counter China. Or could just expand the franchise from Europe.

Or, some existing members of NATO could start another identical organization that includes Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Philippines but excludes Hungary and Turkiye, then withdraw from NATO, leaving only the Turks and Hungarians left as a rump NATO. Solves a couple of problems.

The US Coast Guard should begin escorting Philippine ships to their islands. The Chinese pull that nonsense with the US Coast Guard.

Hey, look at all those Communist Party of Vietnam outposts infringing on PI sovereignty!

Is Vietnam disgracing itself by ramming ships?

lol. Maybe the US can send another mothballed navy vessel for PI to ground on another reef.

where Filipino troops are stationed on a grounded Philippine navy vessel.

It only goes to China's disgrace that they are picking on the Philippines.

These resupply ships need to be escorted by something BIGGER, like say a US Carrier Taskforce

That is an escalation and probably not good for anyone. Not Philippines, US or China.

China's claims in the SCS are totally unacceptable and messages need to be sent that that Philippines will not be pushed around.

Well, if you put the Philippine boat in a horizontal position, it's the chinese boat that is in the wrong.

And when have you ever heard the chinese coast guard ships complaining about being rammed?? Never, because ships from other countries are more civilized and courteous!!

By looking at the photo, it seems like filipino boat changed its route towards the Chinese boat.

It looks like the Philippine ship is traveling in a straight line, going to resupply it base and the Chinese ship is moving to try and block its access, when they have no right to interfere, and should not be anywhere near the Philippine ship. Clear Chinese interference.

China's coast guard said it "took control measures" against Philippines ships'

China's statement even admits it is interfering with the Philippine ship, not the other way around.

Chinese coast guard being hundreds of miles from any Chinese territory, and ramming a Philippines coast guard ship in Philippines territory. That is a nation traveling a long way to make trouble in someone else's back yard.

Is it any wonder nations in the region are banding together and increasing security cooperation in response to Chinese trouble making?

Xi knows he is turning China into a thieving, untrustworthy pariah nation that encourages the creation of more alliances against China. He just does not care about China's worsening reputation in the world, let alone in nearby regions.

China, like Russia, is in desperate need of new leadership and their nations would benefit immensely from adopting true free and open democratic systems.

Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, India, etc.,

Restless China trying, testing, bumping and nudging all her neighbors, except those who do not have anything to offer. Russia beware!

Standard Chinese MO, make a claim on someone's territpry, act like you own it amd ram their ships.

"China is not looking to fight a cold war or a hot war with anyone".

"China is the only country to incorporate its commitment of peaceful development into [its] constitution".

says Liu Jianchao, currently the head of the international liaison department of the Chinese Communist Party.

I don't really think that China understands the word "peaceful".

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, brushing aside competing claims from a host of Southeast Asian nations and an international ruling that has declared its stance baseless.

The CCP has no shame!!

7 ( +10 / -3 )

No surprise there.

Sooner or later, it’s going to escalate to more than this ramming.
