He thinks he can retire quietly. I think and hope he’s wrong.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday announced he was retiring from politics and dropping plans to run for vice president in next year’s elections when his term ends, avoiding a legal battle with opponents who question such a move.

A Trump wanna-be who knew when to "throw in the towel".....

Some former failed reality TV hosts with a narcissistic personality disorder just can't do it...

If the Philippines do have serious drug problems, maybe Duterte's replacement might have the strength of character to go after those highest up in the drug supply chain even if they are local billionaires or Chinese gangs or gangs ruled by a general somewhere,

instead of doing what Duterte has been reported to be doing which is getting his heavily armed security thugs to murder unarmed, suspected drug users without having a trial.

Hopefully the voters of the Philippines will be allowed to freely elect their preferred candidates and the candidate with the most votes will be allowed to win. And there will be no foreign election influence (stay away US, China, Russia, etc.).

In properly functioning democracies the candidate with the most votes should be the winner. And the losing side should accept the results without resorting to ridiculous conspiracy theories, like those some Trump supporters alleged, for example North Korea sent a fishing boat to Maine with ballots filled out for Biden.

One less fascist leader is a good thing, but the underlying social currents that let him get into power are still concerning. Not to mention that he should probably be in prison rather than retirement.

Just Duterte being out of office doesn't necessarily mean they are in the clear yet, but it's a start.

I’d call trump a dueterte wannabe.

The former guy attacked peaceful protestors, spread les and disinformation, wanted to jail comedy show hosts who made fun of him……

He was stopped from doing all these because of the rule of law, some dueterte frequently ignored.

I wonder if he was worried Manny Pacquiao would want to box him.

I see a change of mind in his future. Dictators and authoritarian types never go away quietly.

@Mocheake, utterly sad but so true. If you could just dropped by my FB account to read local sentiments and articles against him. If only people could satiate their hunger for wealth and power, the world can be a better place.

Philippine leader Duterte announces retirement from politics :

Would Filipino drug addicts be happy if the guns-trigger goes?

Once he is no longer President and the war on drugs is probably lessened, then some people can live in the Philippines and have access to drugs all they want.  As some know, hard drugs make some people a better person. Strange thing, isn’t it?

@asiafriend, for one thing majority of the Filipino people are doubting if he's really serious with that pronouncement. It has been proven time and again that he can't stand on his own words. Some are even calling it a prank. Some are counting the days when he would appear and retract what he had previously stated. But everyone looking for good governance are looking forward to its realization with warily.

And him out of presidency would make the Phils a haven for some people who wants drugs? If all the news and statistics even from PDEA is to be believed, the flow of drugs into the Phils heightened during his term. Killing the drug addicts and small time runners while the big fish run loose is more like sowing fear and eliminating competitors. For all what is worth, if I were his relative I'd beg for him to even resign. With the talk that he's on dialysis and with his advanced age, it must be so tiring facing the camera and putting on a show.

And make kingpins (and their associates in government, police and military) very rich. But if I were a poor man, I could do more good on drugs than with a bullet in the back. Life isn't black and white and learning the truth about money and power is very hard work and can cost you your life if you disturb the sleep of the rich and powerful, which is why most people turn a blind eye to the evil doings of Duterte (many thousands more murdered than the 6,000 mentioned in the article).
