I think a lot of people make the mistake of judging Duterte, and the Philippines in general, from a modern western perspective and by modern western standards.

What do you mean mistake in Judging!? it's all coming from his own dirty mouth... so what now!? don't tell me that these are jokes again? jeeez! I am tired of you Duterte supporters covering up for him , when he keeps on dropping his own marbles. Why don't you just admit that you guys made a mistake voting for this psycopath. The point is, Extra judicial killing is against the LAW! I don't care about his intentions or western standards, we have a LAW and constitution to follow and anyone who will disobey it should be punished! This guy belongs to Jail. The main problem in Philippines is not really Drugs, it's the messed up Justice system.

"Why on earth did they elect this scumbag?"

People tired of criminals and drug gangs overrunning the country?

Not sure that that is not what we see with some of our American police, killing unarmed people, men, women, and children and never investigated or brought to trial, at least rarely ever. Our minorities communities often have far more to worry about from our police, than our gang members. Oftern in minority areas, the police are just the biggest, best armed street thugs around.

Not to defend Duterte's action against drug users (they should be rehabilitated, not killed) but the reason why Filipinos overwhelmingly voted for him is......just that. He literally campaigned this way, by saying he'll kill criminals, as how he did when he was the mayor of Davao. I've lived in the Philippines before, and the people there are fed up of these crime lords who commit violence on a daily basis. It's actually pretty crazy, so much so that the people have sort of gotten desensitized on the whole idea of murdering or killing, and that they'd like nothing more than to see a reversal where the criminals are now the receiving end of this violence. In a Western perspective, yeah, it seems abnormal. Just giving a little context on how bad it is there, and how the previous administration (Aquino) actually had close ties with these said drug and crime lords who let them do as they pleased.

I think a lot of people make the mistake of judging Duterte, and the Philippines in general, from a modern western perspective and by modern western standards. The Philippines is not a modern western society and things like revenge killings and vigilante justice are pretty much standard operating procedure there.

Digong is far more representative of the average Filipino than his predecessor Noy Noy ever was and his personal history of extrajudicial killings is seen as something to put in the plus column for a very large number of Pinoys.

It sounds like that everyone can be executioner in Philippine against suspected criminals. No need of court of justice there.

Duterte's wife: Did you ever kill anyone?

Duterte: Yeah, but they were all bad.

Lol, don't be back

These aren't even people who have been found guilty... these are just suspects. As much as I dislike addicts I certainly wouldn't wish them killed... jeez. Is he really trying to be another Hitler?

Why on earth did they elect this scumbag?

Not sure, but it could have something to do with all of the violent crime and drug related problems and people are fed up.

Today, a few murders. Tomorrow a few political assassinations. Next week a genocide. Followed of course by a Nobel Prize.

In a world becoming ever more crowded with moron extreme right wingers, it is necessary for them to go to even further extremes to prove their right wing value and gain global street cred. The competition is heating up, and a puny couple of personal murders is nothing and should be overtaken fairly soon. For the moment I guess he is in the lead

The interpretation Duterte gives to the rule of law means Philippines could save tons of money by firing the judges and disbanding the courts. These are not necessary.

What an absolute freak. He rode around looking for trouble, murdered people if he found it (likely created it, too), and brags about wanting to kill MILLIONS of people? If i were a leader in this world I'd be distancing myself from this guy, not trying to be friends like some are and giving him even more money and power.

Probably the head of state with the lowest EQ and IQ of the last 100 years or so. The bloke sees absolutely no difference between dealers (often criminals) and users (often dealers' victims and ppl with issues who need help).

Small man syndrome, has to show the world how tough he is.

I love this guy he is endlessly entertaining !!!

This guy is trawling the depths with nutters from past decades, like Idi Amin, Emperor Bokassa and Pol Pot. He would have been marginalised, avoided and decried in almost any other decade. But it says something about our values now that there is not more outrage against this macho, anti-intellectual gang-boss wannabe. I think he is a sign and symptom of increasing anarchy in the world.

Duterte Harry indeed. The Donald should now regale us with tales of his misspent youth.....

What a wonderful character. And we gave him a state visit. Hurrah for us!
