Had there been any talk of giving them their own island? There will naturally be problems associated with such an idea, but what are they?

Of course there has been such talk. The current government had actually made a deal with them, offering peace for land in Southern Mindanao (and abandoning the Christian villages in the area to life under islamic oppression). The Philippine Supreme Court annulled that, and the jihad goes on. (As is would anyway.)

Perhaps the surrounding countries do not want to see any one of them setting a precedent?

Why, would you want your country to set a precedent? Thailand, China, Russia, Nigeria, Kashmir, Lebanon, in fact everywhere in the world where you have sizable muslim population, sooner or later it will demand its own Sharia state.

There is nothing unique about the Philippine situation. Do you think the islamists should be appeased?

One thing to keep in mind about the Muslims in the Philippines is that Islam pre-dates the introduction of Catholicism by at least 300 years. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish all of Mindanao and the Visayas were firmly Islamic. Through a concerted policy of persecution the Catholic Spanish wrested control of the Muslim homelands away from the inhabitants and continue to marginalize them to this day. You may not like the way that they respond to them but the Muslim Filipinos have some very real grievances’.

Once you begin a "land for peace" operation, it will become repetitive until you lose everything. People don't seem to understand that the world is in a muslim crusade for world dominance...

What are these Filipino muslim homelands of which you speak jager? Before islam and even chritianity there was basic aboriginal worship and non specific religious beliefs based on nature. Honestly if Islam was the main religious belief the Phillipines surely wouldn't be what they are today. They'd be more like Indonesia...

Another thing is why do they want their own governance? This has been a very nasty pattern repeated in more than the Phillipines by a nice sized muslim community. Oh lets just sweep all the terrorist acts on all the other Filipinos, or hapless tourists that just happened to be there.

The Philippines going to the appeasement route.

Of course, there is no such thing as "peace" with kuffars for the islamists.

One concession will only only lead to another. As every islamic scholar can point out, "peace" in islamic terms is the state where the whole world is submitted under islam.

A religious sect should not be "entitled" to land/government just because of their religious beliefs.

HonestDictator:

While I agree with you, dont´t forget that this sect happens to be the worlds largest religion, and demand for sharia rule is part of the basic tenets.

2nd largest religion lol. Not yet the largest.
